  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

I think the statistic is bogus. It is so high I just can't believe it. One in five? Come on. That is a massive portion of the children and people I know and I just don't see that happening.

You don't see it, and the survivors and the attackers don't talk about it. The attackers would be even more retarded if they talked about it, as they would be persecuted. The survivors are usually embarassed and a lot of them repress any kind of memories to the crime in order to somehow cope with it. Thus, you do not see it.

I think, if anything, the statistic is conservative. After I read your comment, I flipped through my mental rolodex and I can think of 3 (male) exes, 7 family members, and 18 friends/acquaintances who have been sexually abused. And these are just the ones I know about, and the ones I could come up with in 5 minutes while counting on my fingers.

I am saying that MOST people don't know as many people as I do. As I said before, I was in the unique position where many people came forward to share their stories. This is not common knowledge, it's not "oh, hey, I have this funny story from my childhood." I sincerely hope this person is correct, however, I also believe the attitude of "This only happens to other people in other places" is dangerous. If you don't believe it can happen to your kid, you won't be as likely to protect them from potential situations where it COULD.

There are reasons these people told me their story, and it was people who I never would have imagined it happening to. That's the point. It CAN happen to anyone. It also doesn't have to encompass years of sexual abuse, or actual penetrative sex. Sexual abuse can be a one-time incident of getting groped in a public bathroom, for example. I think in cases like this, the victim is less likely to speak of it, even with their closest friends. I'm not trying to say "everyone you know has been molested!" I hope not. I'm just saying, when you think it CAN'T and WON'T happen in your community, you have no reason to look for the signs that it might. And that is terrifying.

I didn't necessarily say it was higher. I said to all the people saying "This only happens in third world countries and Alabama" that I would rather assume the statistic is actually higher than let my kid go into the old guy down the street's house to see his Mickey Mouse Club paraphernelia. I don't look for child molesters behind every friendly face, I simply keep my kids out of situations that could render them helpless if the situation did arise. And to say that because YOU THINK the statistic is bullshit makes my opinion bullshit shows that when you present a valid argument to the closed minded, they will respond in insults and absolutes.

You want a sobering moment? Find out how many registered sex offenders you cross on your daily travels or live/work by. Then, if possible, check to see their punishments. Cross reference that with the average sentence for a kid getting caught with an ounce of weed.

It's fucking sick.

You also have to take into consideration that there are a million child molesters out there that never get turned in.

Usually in these reports you can see the crimes they've been convicted of. For example - When searching by my girlfriend's place a while back we found out that one of her neighbors had been convicted of molesting 2 children. We also found out that another one of her neighbors (a female) had been convicted of public lewdness (or however it was termed).

It's pretty simple to tell the "real" from the "fake".
