If you're not friends with people who share your interests (including the interest of discussing interests in a civil, respectful manner), then why are you friends with them? :)

Oh I see I must be doing it wrong. I should only hang out with people who match my beliefs on everything. That's doesn't sound close minded at all.

When you say "every time" it sounds like you do this often. So while it might not be everything you're interested in... it sure sounds like the kind of things you want to discuss.

Ok, change every time to any time or how about that one time. Dang Reddit always stuck on semantics, just laugh and move on.

Everyone you're friends with has the same religious and political views as you or enjoys discussing those topics with you in a calm, logical manner? Where do you live and how many friends do you have?

Canada. With my friends, it's frowned upon to talk about religion or politics, so none of us do. It's awesome.

It's awesome to pretend that politics and religion aren't extremely important things that affect almost every aspect of our lives and the lives of most humans on this planet?

Most of us are atheists. For the most part, we keep our religious beliefs to ourselves. Even my friends with faith don't write about god on facebook, etc.

We'll talk about a specific political issue if it's super important, but for the most part, we are content with our political system and/or don't broadcast our feelings about every single topic.

That's pretty much my group of friends. Maybe yours is different.

Why?

Life is good. We have jobs and healthcare and places to live. And we generally don't personally know people negatively affected by the government. In my opinion, anyway.

Once in a while, an issue that concerns us will be discussed. There's a new distracted driving law in our province that is far too strict, for instance. Or how the telecoms are getting away with usage based billing. Or talking about the legacy of Jack Layton. etc.

I don't know if you have heard or not but the US is kinda digging itself a nice hole. So talking about the govt these days is actually very common here. Basically we are all being more and more screwed by our govt and it isn't looking good right now.

This issue with our govt very much so concerns everyone so why not discuss it. I don't know if other countries even know the details of whats going on here. Do you?? Just curious. :)
