I read an explanation that this photo was taken right near a park thats popular for outdoor weddings / after partys. A common wedding gift could be a sewing machine which was used in the photo.

I was just talking about that pic with my wife because of this post. I figured he was on his way to prom in his mom's car and couldn't pass up the opportunity. She thinks he was walking to prom and found an opened box from the UPS accident and posed with the contents. Your explanation is much more plausible, thanks.

I also think he was on his way to the prom. However I suspect his date needed her dress adjusted and she didn't have a sewing machine. This guy's mum happens to have a small portable one, so he brings it along early to her house before the prom. He passes this on the way and takes the opportunity for a photo.

It also explains why it's still daylight, as it gives the girl time to adjust her dress before the prom.
