Looking for an image subreddit with minimal rules? Check out /r/images

A place to share interesting photographs and pictures. Feel free to post your own, but please read the rules first (see below), and note that we are not a catch-all for general images (of screenshots, comics, etc.)

Spoiler code

Please mark spoilers like this:
[text here](/spoiler)

Hover over to read.

Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

Counter argument (in my humble opinion, trumps rediquette.)

Karma Decay lets you search any photo to make sure it hasn't been posted on reddit before, and even lets you know how long ago it was posted. It is a public service to let people know of a tool that can improve the quality of content on this site.

[–]MaxX_Evolution -3 points-2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

According to Karma Decay, this picture got a few hundred upvotes 4 months ago. The rest of the times it says it was submitted, it was largely ignored.

I find it odd that you're suggesting Karma Decay helps improve content quality while, at the same time, you're using it to break the first fucking rule of Reddiquette. If it was submitted once 4 months ago, then forgive the 1,000+ people who upvoted it and just move on. It's not like someone is resubmitting week-old content. It's not reducing the quality of content on this site.

Your post, on the other hand, is doing just that.

What does that have to do with anything? If it was largely ignored, what's the reason for it to be posted again?

I find it odd that you're suggesting Karma Decay helps improve content quality while, at the same time, you're using it to break the first fucking rule of Reddiquette.

I was informing, not complaining. What about me pointing to the KarmaDecay listing for that photo made it a complaint per se?

It's not like someone is resubmitting week-old content. It's not reducing the quality of content on this site.

I happen to think that it does, and that the site can be improved by people checking to make sure that what they're posting isn't recycled.

If you don't like people being able to use technology that helps prevent reposting, just forgive the 20+ people that upvoted it and just move on. It's not like the post was reported to the mods. It's not reducing the quality of content on this site.

[–]MaxX_Evolution -3 points-2 points ago

Because Reddit is dynamic, as was mentioned before.

I was informing, not complaining. What about me pointing to the KarmaDecay listing for that photo made it a complaint per se?

The subtext, that's what. I mean, really? You're going to play this card after outright admitting you think reposts reduce the quality of this site? Don't play stupid.

I happen to think that it does, and that the site can be improved by people checking to make sure that what they're posting isn't recycled.

This isn't "recycled". I'm honestly not even sure if you're being serious at this point. Do you have any clue how many people have joined within the last 4 months? How many people might not have been online the last times this was submitted? That's the whole point behind "Reddit is dynamic". It's not an archive, and having multiple submissions of the same content is not a problem. If you think it is, downvote it.

You're saying and doing the exact fucking opposite of what Reddiquette says, and defending it as if you're helping the community. Like I said.. I honestly can't tell if you're being serious here or not.

And informing people of a useful site like KarmaDecay would help reduce reposting, right?

I honestly can't tell if you're being serious here or not.

likewise

[–]MaxX_Evolution -2 points-1 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

And informing people of a useful site like KarmaDecay would help reduce reposting, right?

Maybe, but so does downvoting. Either way it's besides my entire point, so I'm going to just repeat my last post, since I can't imagine why you'd keep mentioning KD if you bothered to read it:

You're saying and doing the exact fucking opposite of what Reddiquette says, and defending it as if you're helping the community.

This submission, according to Reddiquette, is perfectly fine. They're not rules, but they are community-made guidelines and expectations, and you're going directly against them. That's all I'm saying. Whatever justifications you can use beyond that to delude yourself into believing you're right, I'm really not interested in. I've already addressed them anyway.

[–]duckbutt 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Reposting makes the site banal, and just like every other site. That makes Reddit worse. Ipso Facto, reposting hurts reddit, and I'm not going against the reddiquette (which as you say aren't actually rules) because I wasn't complaining, I was informing.

[–]calinet6 -3 points-2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

And informing people of a useful site like KarmaDecay would help reduce reposting, right?

Yes, but why would we want to reduce reposting? That's the whole question here. In fact, reposts are valuable because reddit is dynamic. Not everyone spends every day on reddit, people miss posts, many new users join, old users return, reddit algorithms change, upvote ratios and opportunities for front-paging change, interests change, and on and on and on. A repost is effectively the same as a post for a great majority of redditors. There's no difference if they, personally, haven't seen it before.

It's a delicate balance, and I'd perhaps downvote if it were reposted from last week, but in general the very idea of reposts is not to be decried, but supported. It comes from the realization that you are not the only person on reddit, that it is a community full of different ages, people, working habits, time zones, and internet abilities, and reposting content that hasn't been seen in a long time is beneficial to that community. It brings it together in ensuring a better understanding of the type of content the typical redditor enjoys, especially if it's highly upvoted like this post.

I honestly can't tell if you're being serious here or not.

likewise

I assure you he's being very serious. There's a damn good reason "don't complain about reposts" is the number one rule of the reddiquette.

A reddit bereft of reposts would be a sad, boring place. If you want better content on reddit, post better content. Encourage it by upvoting. Follow the reddiquette and support posts which you like, and downvote repeats if you don't think they should be seen by anyone ever again (I find this idea ludicrous, but to each his own). A repost filter would actually reduce the quality of content on reddit, because there would simply be less quality content at any given time; the reposts themselves are mostly harmless and debatably beneficial. They should be praised, upvoted if good, and downvoted at the very worst. Anything more than that is a detriment to the community.

blatantly false, the original content is what makes this place unique and interesting

A repost filter would actually reduce the quality of content on reddit, because there would simply be less quality content at any given time

no, it would reduce the quantity not the quality

the reposts themselves are mostly harmless and debatably beneficial

and just as debatably harmful

I can't tell if you're complaining or genuinely thanking him. Um, congrats, you get the Ambiguity Award for the day.

[–]substanceboarder 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well part of me wants to thank him. The reasoning being that the more people post old crap the more people will call for a more precise mechanism for removing said old crap. When old reposts like this get 1500 upvotes while an interesting article in r/science or r/askscience gets jack I weep.

[–]calinet6 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

See, I don't see this as a problem. It just means that 1500 or more people have never seen it before and believe it's valuable. Similarly the /r/science and /r/askscience subreddits are less popular and will get upvotes accordingly, and the same effect may benefit them as well. The same interesting article posted one day that gets jack shit might get 1500 upvotes posted a week later, for who knows what reason. Yet, if there were "a precise mechanism for removing old crap" then a great majority of people will not get to see that old crap, ever. I'd much rather see a repost and skip over it if I've seen it before. Not a big deal, and in fact, hugely beneficial to the system.

[–]substanceboarder 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'll meet you halfway. What if there was a mechanism for making reposts like this Karma neutral to the poster? I know Karma isn't real but the bottom line is some people are Karma whores. Another thing to consider is when a repost like this gets so many upvotes we are devaluing the hard work and intellect of people posting original and thought provoking content.

Sure, you're right when you say its good that with multiple posts more people are getting exposure. However, the original poster who found this photo and posted it to Reddit isn't receiving the credit (All be it fake points) he deserves. Lets say that there was a "Repost" feature right next to permalink, parent, source etc. and when the "Repost" feature is clicked a certain amount the post becomes Karma neutral.

Its a rough idea but it might help somehow.....I feel like I've lost myself within my own ramble so I apologize to you and completely understand if you are lost.

[–]calinet6 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I understand and appreciate that you're trying to strike a balance. That would be more acceptable, and it might discourage posting reposts strictly for the karma, which may be all that's required.

However as you say, karma isn't real. Seeing a post you haven't seen before, on the other hand, is real.

I suppose it seems silly to argue over whether the post is giving karma to the reposter, when the real question is if it's giving value to the community. But I get your drift and I would support such a feature if it was important to people.
