I can here to say that. I showed it to my Chinese co-teachers, and they pretty much said that he answered the essay perfectly. Gotta love a student that follows your instructions to the letter.

Homework like this is often given in history, and even English classes(depending on the material being read). I've written several dozens of homework assignments like this. The teacher usually thinks they're being clever by having you think in someone else's shoes.

Trust me, it's much worse the other way.

It's even more confusing if you've studied Japanese, as they only simplified individual kanji whereas in the PRC there were mostly broad simplification rules. There are even some characters which were simplified in Japan but not in Mainland China, oh it's just a nightmare!

[–]FrabriziovonGoethe 7 points8 points ago

Every foreign exchange student should do something like this if they are asked to write back to their home country about how their experiences are going. The question in itself while intending for people to think of previous life situations doesn't consider that many modern people cannot break away from their modern sensibilities in order to do so.

[–]soul3n 2 points3 points ago

JPEGs are fine for pictures of text. You need to set a high enough quality setting and/or resolution, however.

PNGs, in turn, suck balls for pictures of text. You know, the ones you take with a camera. Sure, there's no distortion, but since they'll utterly fail at compressing the analog noise you'll find in the white background of the page, your file size will be ridiculously huge.

PNGs are great for illustrations, diagrams, and images of text with very little analog noise. If not generated on the computer, then at least cleaned up, levels balanced, noise removed by altering curves, etc. It's usually okay for things like webcomics where the author has taken quite some effort to remove this noise, resulting in a nice black-and-white image with long horizontal runs of black or white pixels that the PNG compression algorithm handles well.

JPEGs are great for pictures taken with a camera; their compression algorithm is designed to efficiently deal with the analog noise found in such pictures without rendering the image unintelligible. You'll note that the OP's image was quite readable, and the noise hard to notice until you zoomed in. You'll also notice it was 50KB. The PNG screenshot you saved was 84KB, and it was of a smaller region of the overall image (the zoom-in using nearest neighbor won't affect PNG file size much thanks to its zlib encoding)*.

So, in short, this is not a case where PNG would work better. If you want to get rid of that noise, but still have a decent file size, there are three options:

  1. Save as PNG. 50KB image becomes several MB.
  2. Crop the image, to just the black-and-white page, then adjust histogram curves and save as PNG. File size increases significantly, but probably remains reasonable.
  3. Increase JPEG quality. File size increases significantly, but probably remains reasonable.

I, personally, would recommend 3.

* - Note that recompressing JPEG to PNG will usually result in file size increases. However, the point here is that converting a very small region of the image to PNG results in a file size larger than the original file. Also note that most digital cameras output JPEG format, so you will always end up recompressing JPEG artifacts, unless you go via raw output format (which most people don't know how to do), or spend the time cleaning up artifacts (as well as the other analog artifacts while you're at it; a lot of work, and again, most people don't know how).

[–]iMarmalade 2 points3 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Save as PNG. 50KB image becomes several MB.

I tried it out - it goes from 50KB to 410KB.

Also note that most digital cameras output JPEG format, so you will always end up recompensing JPEG artifacts

Higher-end digital camera have a high-quality option that sets the JPEG compression to as near to artifactless as JPEG gets. At least that's my experience with my D90.

Edit: I'm not arguing for the use of PNG for photos, just making a few observations.

[–]ITSigno 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

furthermore, a utility like pngcrush will do wonders for png file size if you're concerned about that.

[–]bdunderscore 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

pngcrush can't fix the analog noise issues, because it can only perform lossless transformations on the input PNG.

[–]Slime0 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I tried it out - it goes from 50KB to 410KB.

The JPG probably already discarded a lot of the noise, though.

[–]iMarmalade 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Perhaps. In any case we still saw nearly a 10-fold increase in size.

I tried this again with one of my own photos taken with my Nikon d90. The image quality is set to fine and in my experience this results in almost no artifacts. In addition, the noise is very low, as the ISO was set to about 200 and the photo was taken in direct sunlight. However, the photo is very "busy" - meaning lots of grass and other complex shapes.

The original photo was 4.78MB. The PNG file is 25.4. - so a ~5 fold increase in size.

Seems clear to me that, at least in terms of file size, JPEG is superior.

Server admins. ISP techs. Embedded developers. Just because you have the luxury of large bandwidth doesn't mean you shouldn't care about efficiency. Remember this, the entirety of Ocarina of Time was stored in 32MB.

[–]Xizer -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I care more about quality than efficiency.

I'd rather the entirety of the Ocarina of Time take up 32 GB than 32 MB if it meant every texture was native high definition.

[–]nullsucks 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If you use PNG to store a photo, you'll store the original shot noise (and other noise) perfectly.

JPG intentionally throws away a lot of perceptually-meaningless data.

(That's different from camera RAW files, of course, which are useful because they let you do additional lossless processing later.)

[–]bdunderscore 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It must be nice living in a country where that kind of network connection is available. Not everyone does. And why waste bandwidth on something that doesn't matter?

[–]Xizer 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Clearly readable text without compression artifacts definitely does matter.

I see no reason to use JPGs anymore in this day and age when PNG can reproduce the entire work losslessly at a reasonable size.

[–]OmegaVesko 0 points1 point ago

If everyone took that attitude we'd never have YouTubes and Facebooks and imgurs and we'd all still be browsing a text-only Internet.

[–]bowmessage 13 points14 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Ah, wow, thank you. I just assumed it was a page of Chinese homework!

[–]BabySinister 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

as a teacher myself i would say this student actually did what was asked of him. nowhere in the assignment is a preferred language stated, however it is stated one is to assume the role of a Chinese person.

following an assignment to the letter is not trolling the teacher at all, this teacher should be ashamed at a horribly sloppy assignment.

[–]FuzzyMcBitty 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I teach high school. The children know that I speak English. I shouldn't have to say, "Only assignments done in English will be accepted. I'd probably laugh and make them read it to me. The only really "sloppy" about it is the lack of any sort of length indicator.

[–]BabySinister 2 points3 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

i teach physics at a dutch grammar school. our high school system has different levels of difficulty, grammar schools being the most "difficult" high school out there. this means i get classrooms full of melvins.

should i choose to word an assignment like this on my tests or homeworkassignments you can be completely sure 1 or more students will at least attempt something like this.

now off course i would laugh about this should a student hand an assignment in like this. however should i have graded these assignments the student could have made a big fuss about whether he conformed to the assignment or not and he would be completely in the clear.

that is without getting started about the lack of length indicator.

p.s. thank god i don't ever give writing assignments.

edit: my point is though, let us assume for arguments sake that this assignment was graded. because the criteria for the assignment are not sufficiently clear (what language is expected? this is an English class but the assignment tells me to write a letter to my fictitious relatives in china, how long is this supposed to take? etc.) how can you expect to test what you want to test (i am not completely sure what that might be in this particular case since it is not my field of expertise) if your students are not made sufficiently clear what the assignment is?

sure in this case it might be obvious, but that does not make the wording of this exercise any less insufficient and lacking crucial information. hence this assignment is a sloppy job.

Are Chinese characters typically mixed with standard punctuation like periods, commas and question marks? Just curious.

[–]schmaidan 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes they certainly are. Chinese uses ? and ! all the time as well as our commas, but there are also special Chinese punctuation marks such as 。(Chinese full stop) and 、(a comma used for lists instead of clauses). This is only relatively recent and was added some time in the twentieth century, ancient Chinese has no punctuation marks, like ancient Latin.

[–]pibot 0 points1 point ago

Can't speak for historically, but in contemporary usage, yes. The punctuation isn't always identical, for instance the period is an open circle instead of a closed dot (。vs .) Also, some punctuation is used that we don't use here, such as 「」for quotes, but this can depend on where you're from. :P

Edit: Or Taiwan. Yes, you guys are right. I had forgotten this.

[–]mrsix 47 points48 points ago

Since he's from 1870 simplified Chinese would be anachronistic.

[–]Phate18 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It would indeed, however it can't be expected of the child of a Mainland Chinese immigrant to be familiar with traditional characters.

Unless, of course, his ancestors emigrated before the simplification of 1957 and 1964.

[–]anttirt 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Selection bias. If all he knew were simplified characters, he wouldn't have tried to be such a smartass in the first place, unless he was also spectacularly ignorant of recent history.

[–]jurble 1 point2 points ago

However in 1870, they had not yet started writing in colloquial, correct? Therefore this should be in Classical Chinese.

[–]meractus 0 points1 point ago

True. Didn't think of that, forgot that simplified was only used in the 50s. However, literacy rates back in 1870 must be pretty low.

More likely to be from Taiwan, since it has 3x the population of Hong Kong.

Hong Kong sends more kids than Taiwan to study abroad because of it's being a part of the British empire until 1997, it recently reverted back to Chinese control, but remains a separate city state because of it's ties to Britain. China considers it too be a "Special Administrative Region", that is to say, it has it's own government and it's own laws and China has no real influence over it.

Sources; A friend of mine from Hong Kong who goes to school with me here in Canada.

Taiwan also has it's own government and laws, and let's be honest, China has immense influence over both Hong Kong and Taiwan.

Indeed. Beijing's initial promise not to change anything in Hong Kong for 50 years turned out to be empty from the word go. Already the government of the PRC is enforcing monetary measures to tie the HKD to the RMB.

China considers Taiwan to be a rogue province and it's not even officially recognized by the U.N.

Even with the trend towards normalizing diplomatic and trade relations, China still has 1500 missiles pointed at Taiwan. Also, after China announced their first aircraft carrier, Taiwan unveiled their anti-carrier missile. Politics can be fascinating and quite absurd.

Sorry for the tangent, had a "the more you know" moment there.

I think that simplified Chinese is primarily taught outside of mainland China. Simplified Chinese, at least in my experience in the California public education system, isn't taught in the beginner to intermediate levels.

Edit: Oops I meant to type that simplified is taught mainly INSIDE of mainland China. Had a brainfart.

[–]kaevne 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Simplified is used in Mainland. Simplified only came into widespread use in the 1950s. Traditional is still used in Taiwan and HongKong.

I would say that he/she's most likely Taiwanese. While people in hong kong do write in traditional chinese, they write it in the style of the Cantonese dialect which wouldn't make much sense to Chinese speakers Most hong kongers can't actually read Chinese either, despite sharing all of the characters.

[–]shadybear 1 point2 points ago

... Most Hong Kongers can't actually read Chinese? What the shit?

Formal Chinese makes perfect sense in Cantonese. While some gossip magazines may write with colloquial slang unique to Cantonese, most respectable publications in Hong Kong are in formal Chinese, which is pretty much uniform across China. This is as if someone said the Brits can't read American English because the Brits have their own slang.

[–]Lyrad1002 0 points1 point ago

I think the difference between formal and informal speech in HK is a bit more intense. I can sort of get by with spoken chinese, but when the news comes on, I lose at least 50% of it.

[–]bobthefish -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Most American Born Chinese also learn traditional at Chinese school instead of simplified.

[–]meractus 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That is quite surprising. I would think that simplified would be much more useful.

[–]bobthefish 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't see how you could possibly determine that, are you saying that by adding just a few line strokes, suddenly Chinese is no longer 'useful'? What nonsense.

[–]meractus 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

More people use simplified than traditional, wouldn't it be more useful to learn simplified? (on the basis that you can communicate with more people?).

Only thing was, he was an exchange student, and it was his first language. Bullshit.

HOMEWORK:

You are to assume the role of a Mexican immigrant in 2011 and write a letter home describing your experiences.

Your letter should include the following:

  • your contributions and experiences in the West.

I don't get it. Was this funny?

BTW, Mexico is considered part of the western world by most definitions.

The United States is very good. They give all kinds of free stuff, like food, drink, a house, and you don't have to pay for health care. Also, the white people are very stupid and they pay a lot of money for shitty work. Well, tell Juan to come here quickly because I'm ovulating and I only have 8 kids right now. I need ten kids in this country to get the most free stuff.

See you soon. Maria.

Chinaman

is a contentious English language term that denotes a Chinese man or person, whether by Han Chinese ethnicity, or as a Chinese national, or, in some cases, an indiscriminate term for a person native to geographical East Asia or of perceived East Asian race.

If you call all these people Asian-American, you may insult them more than calling them chinaman.
