it's also a five hundred mile long storm...

[–]offtheheazy6 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The main thing is, where I live (CT) there are big ass trees everywhere. Old, tall trees, lots of spruces that are top heavy too. Last year we had a particularly windy storm and hundreds of trees in my city collapsed, knocking out power for over a week in some areas. The trees in New England are literally lethal in combination with severe winds. Power outages are guaranteed. We're also not all flood proof around here.

[–]Holly_Tyler 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

And the ground is good she soaked so the roots aren't anchored. On the plus side, I have a wood burning stove as my primary source of heat during the winter. Free wood eeeeeverywhere!

[–]mfball 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Exactly. I'm from MA, and my house is surrounded by trees, none of which are very securely rooted. I don't think it'll probably be bad enough that I myself will be in danger, but I'm hoping the trees don't fall on my house or car.

and 10 people are already dead. The strength of the storm is all throughout the storm, not just localized in the eye like a normal category 1. Like the weather channel has been saying all day, don't even pay attention to the category.

[–]funkyskunk 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

To be fair, 6 of the people who died were driving around IN the storm despite repeated warnings not to. I think part of the death toll is people think it is an event and don't stay inside. Watching the weather channel all day, you can see the newscasters getting increasingly exasperated that nobody is taking the warnings seriously.

The most tragic death was an intersection where a light was out and two cars collided and a child passenger was killed. I really hope the parents were out for a good reason because if they were just joy riding through a hurricane, i'm sure their perspective of things has changed...

tl,dr; if every official agency tells you to stay the fuck inside, do it.

It's also moving incredibly slowly as well. Hurricanes blow through Florida in a few hours usually whereas this is 500 miles long and moving at 10-20 miles an hour. That's OVER 24 hours worth of a hurricane being in a region not equipped to deal with something like this in the first place. The winds aren't the issue, it's the massive amounts of rain being poured down constantly for such an extended period of time and were this actually in Florida like the OP is complaining about, this measly Category 1 would actually be doing quite a bit of damage as well.

[–]eyyyyy 7 points8 points ago*

What's your source on hurricanes moving through Florida in 1-2 hours?

Edit: Downvotes for asking for a source? I just don't understand reddit, I guess.

are you stupid? when a hurricane hits florida its not a couple of hours storm it last for 16 to 24 hours and you arent getting 24 of sustained hurricane force winds the only are with hurricane force winds is around the eye wall which is only about 50 miles wide

"In Newport News, Va., an 11-year-old boy was killed when a tree crashed into his apartment building, said Kim Lee, a spokeswoman for the city."

"And in Brunswick County, Va., a tree fell on a car, killing one other person, said Eileen Guertler, a spokeswoman at the Virginia operations center."

Certainly ended the world for some people.

I remember evacuating from Lafayette to Bunkie for Andrew. Even that far inland Andrew was a monster. Also TS Allison, Rita, Gustav, and Ike all stick out in my recent memory as storms I have gone through and they all except Allison were worse than this thing. Allison just decided to give us in Houston the middle finger and come back over us a second time.

[–]weeniemonster 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I was a baby when Andrew hit, but I remember Lily (2002) and Rita (2005). We fled from Franklin to Lafayette for Lily and it was pretty bad. We saw trees falling on people's homes, shingles flying everywhere, a tornado. But we still drove home as soon as it started calming down. Rita we stayed in Franklin, and it was HELL! We were on the right side of the storm which is the WORST and things went to shit quickly. They are lucky that they mostly will be on the left side, which is usually the calmer side of the storm.

[–]bearwulf 0 points1 point ago

Ike was the rest for me. I actually drove back home to help my dad board up and got stuck. I slept downstairs in case a tree fell on our second story and woke up when our back door which was deadbolted busted open and we had to nail boards across it to keep it closed. I missed a week of classes cause of that storm to. Drove drunk through Gustavo to pick up a girl I met that night and brought her back to my dorm. I am proud of that Gustavo story.

Rita was the same way. My aunt, cousins, and some of my friends came stay with us because we are the only ones in a house. About 5 am, we are all trying to sleep with no AC in the living room and hear a loud crash outside. My stepdad and cousin go outside to see that our shed door has flown open and some of our tools are flying around the neighborhood. It was hard enough to try and catch the objects in the neighboring yards, but trying to close the door and nail it shut was a task that took all 15 of us to do.

It's like when a fellow college person from Buffalo said that people in Philly were being whiny when we got over a foot of snow. Yeah, cause we have the infrastructure to handle that type of snow removal here in Philly! Oh, and there's just as many people driving around in Buffalo any given day as in Philly, right? I mean, Buffalo is just THE place to be. They have an AWESOME place to hang out called Applebees! Shutup and give me my wings.

[–]Anaxarete 5 points6 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

To be clear, I only bitched out the school closings for the <1 inch of snow. Where we are, 1 foot is a damn problem.

[–]R3MY 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

A) As someone who grew up in the snow belt, I agree with what you are saying about the snow.

B) As someone who has spent some time in Buffalo, I just died a little inside when you said you are getting wings at Applebees*.

*Note: I'm all for eating good in the neighborhood, but when you go to Buffalo you clearly have to go to Pizza Hut with a WingStreet.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't think he meant he gets his wings at Applebees. I think he's saying that's the only place they have to hang out. He is saying that their best export is wings, and they should just stop complaining about shit and keep the wings coming.

[–]FoghatIsAmazing 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I wasn't saying that I wanted wings from Applebees... I was saying the only thing good that came out of Buffalo are buffalo wings. And the only thing to do in Buffalo is to go to Applebees.

Yes. I've heard the same shit a lot and I always respond with this. Our structures and emergency management systems are not built to cope with hurricanes up here. Things here are designed to handle terrorists(at least in the metro areas) and snow. How would Florida react if they got 2 feet of snow?

Do y'all not have nor'easters, which bring hurricane force wind and rain?

Cat1 and tropical storms are nothing but big thunderstorms. Oh, and when our power goes out, we have 100+degree heat and 90%+ humidity.

[–]gobias_inc 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The winds have already be clocked at 80 mph in NC. Nor'easters are capable of gusts at that speed but hurricane winds are constant and cause much more damage at the same strength.

Only 5 hurricanes have passed within 75 miles of New York city in the past 150 years. The last one was Hurricane Gloria in 1985. Gloria was also a Category 1 when it made land fall and caused 900 million dollars in damage (in 1985 dollars) and eight people died.

First off, link fail.

Second off, I swam through a Category 1 Hurricane. Shit is fucking like a portable wind tunnel/wave pool theme park. It's fucking fun and you get time off work.

Finally, as soon as it hits land, if it's still a Cat 1, it begins to dissipate and will downgrade to a tropical storm.

[–]Poonchow 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

While we have better infrastructure here and more experience, but you do have a shitload of time to prepare for a hurricane. Paths change, yes, but Irene was projected to be going up the east coast for over a week now, which gives you enough time for flashlights, batteries, canned food, bottled water, gas in your car, first aid kits, etc. I'm not trying to say everything is avoidable, but I'd be surprised to see if there were many people dying of collapsed buildings or flooding. It will fuck everything up for sure, but mostly the people that die in cat 1 storms are incredibly stupid or incredibly unfortunate.

I remember one time I heard a warning announcement on the radio in Arizona that it was going to briefly dip below freezing for a short time. Being from somewhere that regularly experiences blizzards in May, I thought that was pretty funny and ridiculous. The next day, fountains turned into mountains of ice, dead cactus's fallen over sidewalks everywhere. The roads also get flooded sometimes because there is a widespread absence of storm drains.

  • sit back, drink your alcohol, and enjoy the vacation!

And the necessary vacation. I heard how them East Coasters HATE their vacations.

BTW, invite friends and family to stay with you if possible. More food, alcohol, and company to keep your mind off of the storm. Also keeps you from worrying if everyone else is doing ok. Remember though, you may be stuck together anywhere from 1-2 days to a week. Choose wisely! Y'all enjoy a nice hurricane party!

I can see both sides of this, but even if you are unprepared for a cat 1, all you have to do is stay the fuck inside. It won't even be a cat 1 for long after landfall. This is far less threatening that some of the snow storms you get every year.

You are above sea level unless you are on the coast of NC, and they are used to hurricanes to an extent. The absolute worst thing that is going to happen is a tree falling on a house, or debris hitting someone who is stupid enough to be outside, or you losing power/water for 2 to 3 days at the most.

The orange crop going bad in Florida isn't even comparable. Citrus canker is already out of control, and losing crop to freezing is just icing on the cake. It takes months to years to recover. You are comparing a storm that will probably only kill people doing stuff they shouldn't have been vs a large portion of a state having to recover from it's main cash crop being decimated. It's not even fucking close.

[–]GuyWithLag 4 points5 points ago

I live in the mountains of NY, at least 100mi from any large body of water, so for me, I'm not too concerned. However, my friends live on Long Island, have a tornado warning, the power is about to go out, and they're keeping an eye out for storm surges and the hurricane hasn't even fully hit them yet. It varies depending on the area, OP.

[–]erosexpressions 29 points30 points ago

A cat 1 that has a pressure of a cat 3 and is as large as some cat 4/cat5 in terms of wind field/rain shield. It also has the potential of arriving on high tide/astronomical high tide with its massive wave field. Its not just WIND that causes damage (primary rating for hurricanes) but also the rain (most of eastern pa/NJ are well, WELL above normal rain stages and only require 1-3in of rain to cause massive flooding) and storm surge (see tides)

[–]Kowzorz 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Also know that its the area covered by the hurricane that increases the amount of storm surge. My area (maryland) has 3-6 feet above high tide predicted. I don't know how much it actually is since our power is out, but that much surge can cause a ton of property damage. The wind here has already downed several trees around my house.

Just a general question to the Andrew, Katrina, Wilma, etc. survivors:

What is the harm in being "over-prepared"? New Orleans wasn't ready for Katrina. Florida wasn't ready for Charlie and Andrew. I kindly send a "fuck you" in your direction if you are whining about the whining of people who haven't really grappled with something like this since 1938. Deal with it.

[–]professorberrynibble 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Clearly we shouldn't be worried about the weather itself; it's all about whose weather-hardiness dick is bigger.

The best part will be when these same people seize upon the (hopefully) minimal casualties and damage as evidence that they were right in talking the storm down while in reality the emergency services who helped prepare the area deserve the credit.

That's what we get for learning from their mistakes.

[–]blkblazerx 0 points1 point ago

The east coast has known this was coming. They've had time to prepare and know what the posibilities of damage will be. Comparing it to charley, a catagory 3 that changed direction at the LAST FUCKING MINUTE is absurd. The saving grace for floridians deaing with hurricanes is that they happen all the time, so if it changes course, people know what to do to minimize damage where they can : tapeing windows if you don't have time or plywood to board them, opening windows just a crack to relieve pessure, etc.

A big hurricane doesnt always mean a powerful one. Gene was huge and the rain went on forever, but there wasn't much damage at all.

The people who need to be the most concerned are the coastal ones. And the water would be much cooler up there anyway, irene should loose steam realitively quickly.

[–]SirNarwhal 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Irene is a 500 mile wide hurricane lingering over a series of islands for an over 24 hour period. It's not going anywhere relatively quickly and even if it does slow down, the entire north east is going to get completely hammered after the already wettest month in history. The land cannot physically take in any more water so the amount of flooding is going to be a major issue, much much worse than what Florida usually sees.

[–]Poonchow 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

We usually see houses ripped apart and thousands of lightning strikes a year. In 2004 we were hit by 4 fucking hurricanes over about a month. Just because we have the infrastructure doesn't me we still don't get our asses kicked.

[–]SirNarwhal 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Correct, but I'm saying that any hurricane is going to do damage and cause issues anywhere. I know firsthand how bad it gets in Florida; I've been there during hurricane season many times and my uncle is a lineman for the power company down there. That being said though, Florida also has tributaries and other areas to catch the rain water that we do not have up north that really do make quite a big difference. Florida gets wrecked by the winds since your homes are made of much less sturdy materials and aren't as deep in the ground due to the softer rock whereas we're going to get destroyed by the rain up north due to it having nowhere to go and flash flooding.

I was born and raised in Charleston, SC. Guess where I was Sept 22, 1989. Gotta love FEMA and Bush family. Had to leave South Carolina shortly afterward due to no home left. I know that Hugo was no where near the devastation that New Orleans had but, I understand what it's like to loose your city over night. It is heartbreaking.

And the rest of the country does the same for snow. Guess what, certain parts of the country are unequipped for certain weather events. For the South, it is snow. For the North, it is hurricanes and tornadoes.

[–]SirNarwhal 4 points5 points ago

The north is unprepared for earthquakes as well. Were that earthquake ever so slightly OVER 6.0 as opposed to ever so slightly UNDER 6.0 the other day, most of New York City's older buildings and many buildings in New Jersey and Philadelphia would have been destroyed as they cannot withstand above a 6.2 or so.

[–]ListenToTheMusic 2 points3 points ago

I live in the Northeast and this is also how I feel having spent most of my summers in southern Florida...I even remember the destruction of Hurricane Andrew. shudders

[–]jessicatron 1 point2 points ago

Now that was a fucking hurricane. I lived decently north of where the eye landed, but the wind sounded like trains were passing directly next to my house.

[–]ListenToTheMusic 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Exactly. There's a reason it's the second and only hurricane from the '90s to make the top ten list of the most expensive hurricanes in US history (all but two of which are from 2004 or later). I can't imagine how long it would take the northeast to recover from a storm of that size after seeing Florida in such a devastated condition for years.

[–]jessicatron 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I have to say, I've been kind of flabbergasted by the freaking out that people are doing about Irene, and my main thought has been "pfft, Andrew"- BUT I will say that I've been realizing over the past couple of hours that flooding is generally the biggest damage-maker associated with this kind of shit. So, okay, NY: I agree that flooding is going to fuck you up. Still, they at least don't have to worry about being in a building where the roof has just been peeled off. After Andrew, every time I move into a new place, one of the first things I think about is "does this house have a small room with no windows and good support?". You and I both know that that's the fuckin safe room.

[–]ListenToTheMusic 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yup, you got it. I've been pretty annoyed about the constant Irene hype, but the one thing that keeps me from flipping out on anyone and everyone is the fact that most of these people haven't experienced a hurricane, and they're basing their response off of what they see and hear on TV and online. Living in Florida during hurricane season for all of my childhood/adolescent years really prepared me for this, so I was keenly aware that Irene was a weak category 3 and not likely to jump to a category 4 like the media was claiming, but it's hard to explain to people that they need to "relax" about the situation while still stressing that there's a potential for death and significant damage (the former of which is mainly from stupidity).

I can't wait for it all to end!

[–]keenlien 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

lol at the people who think we shouldn't care or be prepared for this. i just woke up and there's already destruction in my backyard. the storm hasn't even really hit us yet. besides the concern about loss of life, which there already has been, there's also the huge amount of property damage that will occur. excuse me, your highness, if our attitudes about the ravaging of our city have offended you.

And one thing everything everybody forgets about; when the storm's over and it's officially safe to go out; get straight to work and clean up, don't wait for anyone to come help you. a.) Preparing

b.) Cleaning up and helping others do the same.

dude... i wouldn't even expect the power to go out during a cat 1. i noticed that people are INCREDIBLY uptight and sensitive about this. people down south close schools when snow doesn't even stick and people upnorth go to school in the middle of a blizard. people upnorth panic during a cat 1 hurricane while people down south nap through 'em. people are desensitized to things they are exposed to on a regular basis. to downvote people pointing this out is idiotic.

the difference being that southern states are prepared for hurricanes because they always get them

even smaller ones will od more damage to northern states who have no preparation for them

same the other way aronud, somewhere like nebraska has shit to combat the snow and ice that comes around every year

here in texas, we dont ahve shit...we dont have sand for teh roads, are cars drive like shit in the ice, we are just generally unprepared...so a day or 2 of small ice in texas is fuckin nuts, not cause we arent usde to it, we jsut are unprepared and therefore have to phreak out a bit when it actually happens

When Tropical Storm Fay hit Jacksonville in 2008, we lost power for 4 days and had a entire black oak fall through our garage. It wasn't even a hurricane, but there were deaths and lots of injuries. I wouldn't panic, but I do pay attention and prepare myself when any kind of storm is coming, no matter where I am.

[–]mfball 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The power goes out during normal storms sometimes, particularly if it's windy because trees fall and pull down the wires. If the wind gets up to tropical storm/hurricane speed, I would be absolutely amazed if we didn't lose power. With the tornado we had here in Western MA in June, I lost power for three days, and my neighborhood wasn't even hit by the tornado itself. If a tree pulls a line anywhere on the grid, most lose power. It's flickering now.

[–]SirNarwhal 12 points13 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Again, that's the same ignorant statement the OP is making; we're not building for things like Earthquakes here on the east coast like you are out in California so it IS a big deal. Yes, many people overreacted, but it's not nothing either.

[–]finalremix 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Also, our trees are prepared for winds coming from NW. With a hurricane like this, we're getting winds from the SE... The ground's saturated from the recent string of storms, and the root systems are especially weak against wind from the given direction.

[–]lunahlove 1 point2 points ago

Shit changed. We were all HOPING it would hit so we could get a day or two off work and school. That's how little that shit frightens us. Now we have to hold out for another hurricane.

[–]genericname01 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Not on this one, no. Out of the several hurricanes that have hit Florida in the past 20 or so years, though, I've had to live through some of the harsher ones. Thankfully none of them ever hit my house directly, but we'd get some pretty nasty damage anyway. So yeah, Irene slowly losing strength as it eased up the east coast? Not worth the hype IMO.

[–]jennaberry 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Even with all the flooding, the 18 something deaths, the destruction, etc? The upper east coast isn't built for a hurricane. Especially a large, slow moving one like Irene.

[–]genericname01 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That's true. For the places who aren't used to this kind of weather it was particularly nasty, I just keep forgetting about that. I'm so used to hurricanes being a frequent occurrence for myself and everyone around me that it's hard for me to remember to empathize with people who aren't used to it.

[–]RiflesEyes 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Those predictions aren't 100% accurate, you know? Sometimes the hurricanes do unexpected and strange movements. We were expecting it to possibly hit Florida on Friday or Saturday a little less than a week ago. But still, a Cat. 1 is just a good excuse to stay at home for the day and cancel class :) Cat. 4 or 5... that's when you start boarding up the windows.

[–]lichborne -2 points-1 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This thread is funny. I like how everyone who says it's not a big deal gets downvoted. A Cat 1 is a big fucking thunderstorm and that's it. All of you who say different are just fucking butthurt because you're probably the ones whining.

[–]professorberrynibble 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes, and a tsunami is a big fucking wave. I suppose we should therefore be unconcerned about those too?

[–]lichborne -4 points-3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Ugh. Not the same thing. A thunderstorm is decidedly less dangerous than a tsunami. It's gonna be rainy, it's gonna be windy, some shingles may come off and some branches may be in the road. That's all a Cat 1 can really do, maybe a little bit of coastal flooding. Bottom line is, people are freaking out for no reason. The whole east coast isn't gonna be fucking decimated like everyone's hyping it up.

[–]professorberrynibble 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

So we shouldn't worry much about fallen trees, airborne debris, 20+ hours of consistent rainfall, imminent flooding, and the potential for loss of utilities and emergency services in one of the most populous areas of the country?

Dismiss me as "fucking butthurt" if you want, I'm not exactly sure what I would be butthurt about.

[–]sundogdayze 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

But it's already done more damage than that. It probably won't cause decimation (but we all know how the media will make it look like an apocalypse) but it's killed people already, caused a lot of property damage, and is expected to last a lot longer than a normal thunderstorm. And this is in an area that is not equipped or prepared for this type of weather. It is a big deal for anyone not prepared.

[–]tosss 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

have you seen the causes of death? One guy was driving down a road that was wet from some rain (not even an area that was getting hard rain yet), and they lost control and crashed. That's not a death caused by a hurricane, that's a death caused by shitty driving.

[–]harryarei 2 points3 points ago

And another death was a kid when a branch fell through his apartment building.

[–]weeniemonster 0 points1 point ago

No, no, no- I'll admit that I haven't actually looked up how these people have died- but EVERY major storm has casualties, because people are fucking stupid, sometimes. I saw a video where some asshole was in his car in the middle of the hurricane. I mean, come on.

we were hit by a category 4 I believe here in Texas, well it was a 5 but it weakened to a 4 by the time it reached us. It also stalled over our county and absolutely shredded the town, a lot of us were without electricity for about 2-3 weeks. my dad's house was fine, but he had around 20 felled trees in his pasture and all over our yard, we figured around 2 tornadoes went past our house, one in the pasture, and one in the side lawn, close call for sure.
