Description: Enal is around 6 years old. He knows this shark well - it lives in a penned off area of ocean beneath his stilted house in Wangi, Indonesia. It is very rare for someone to have this kind of connection with a shark.

Are there any other stories about sharks and people being close? Can you say more about the pain the the post?

I doubt any fish can really form a connection.

There was a post awhile back about Koi fish and aside from having very long lifespans (like hundreds of years) one thing that stood out is they can recognize the people who feed them.

Koi will recognize the person feeding them and gather around them at feeding times.

From: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Koi

And while it says citation needed when I posted a similar comment, many people who owned Koi fish chimed in with similar anecdotes.

Probably More Than You Want to Know About the Fishes of the Pacific Coast, Dr. Robin Milton Love:

How smart are fish?

Let's say you've got yourself, oh, 10,000 mice and you run them through all sorts of mouse exams. You put them in mazes, you give them little mouse IQ tests,... you run them through the whole enchilada. And out of those 10,000 mice, you find the most stupid mouse, the one that can barely get out of its own way. That mouse... is smarter than any fish that ever lived. I know, I know, you're going to bring up 'Old Mossback' or 'Old Snagglejaw' or 'Old Duck Slurper,' the 'smartest durn' catfish, kelp bass, steelhead or guppy you've ever heard of. Well, you are wrong. A fish's brain (and we're talking about a really big fish) is not much bigger than a walnut and most of it is used for interpreting sounds, smells, sights, and tastes, not for thinking. What passes for smarts in 'Old Squid Snarfer' is really a well-oiled set of instincts. They don't think; they just react in a way that impresses you.

I think that's just hopeful thinking from people who adore Koi. It may just recognize the time, shape, or color of that person and associate it with food. I bet if you run tests and wear that person's clothing they'll recognize you all the same.

Brain size has little to do with intelligence to a certain extent, however.

This! I'm a fish keeper and it's always interesting how much people anthropomorphize their wet pets. My discus have two thoughts for 99% of their lives; "hide" or "eat".

And we all know what they're thinking in that other 1% of their life.

Happens all the time. People do it to their electronics sometimes so I'm not surprised.

Fish do have some impressive behaviors but they're all %100 instinct because I'm not sure if fish are even capable of conscious thought. That's amazing to me because all of a fish's amazing speed, long journeys, complex swarm behavior of schools, and mating comes as naturally to them as a beating heart is to us.

[–]neighborcat1-scratch 4 points5 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I have found that people will attribute consciousness and intent when the complexity of an object exceeds their understanding.

You probably won't ever hear someone struggling to fasten papers say "this paperclip hates me." but you might hear,"This stapler hates me". If their toast is always either burned or pale, you might hear "My toaster doesn't like this bread." and you will frequently hear someone struggling to construct a spreadsheet say "My computer hates me." (Note that they don't attribute intent to the software, but to the object. Such is the level of misunderstanding.)

So it's not surprising that we interpret the behavior of very complex systems like animals as being the result of intelligence and intent. We build models of the world and objects around us, and test and refine them constantly. We even build a model of ourselves to observe interacting with the other models (hence self-awareness, and I will also note that our model of ourselves is not 100% accurate).

We can observe the behavior of objects and incorporate this into our models without knowing the inner workings, but when we use the model to predict behavior and are wrong, we fill in a default value of "conscious intent" where the causal mechanisms would go. Once the causal mechanisms, the "inner workings" of an object are understood, "conscious intent" is erased from the model. Your computer no longer hates you, and instead you look for the syntax error in the formula you entered.

Why is this interesting? At the risk of going off topic, consider the role of this "attribution of consciousness" phenomenon in the invention of gods. Don't understand the complex mechanisms behind a natural phenomenon? Invent a being with intelligence and intent that controls the phenomenon. This construct quickly becomes omnipotent when the same being is used to explain multiple phenomenon (monotheism), and when separate beings are assigned to different phenomenon, we wind up with a collection less than omnipotent gods (polytheism).

TLDR: The same mental mechanisms that lead us to attribute the complex behavior of animals to consciousness and intent leads humans to invent gods to explain complex natural phenomenon.

[–]IrrigatedPancake 3 points4 points ago

I don't think those people actually believe their stapler or computer dislike them. It's just an expression.

People do, however, think their fish are thinking.

This study shows some surprisingly complex behavior that might suggest a level of thinking beyond base instinct. http://www.uq.edu.au/news/?article=23484

I'll agree that in many cases these things are said in jest, but I have also encountered many who would say "Well, I don't really think my PC is out to get me!" but whose actions say otherwise. They will do things that in dealing with a living being would be seen as currying favor.

To put it another way, we have a disposition towards anthropomorphism. In the absence of other explanations, we will attribute intentionality where there is none, and assume motives not unlike our own. This tendency increases in direct proportion to the complexity of the system or object being observed and inversely to our understanding of the system or object.

This is not to say that doing this is a mistake. The questions of right or wrong, helpful or unhelpful, beneficial or harmful do not apply to our tendency to anthropomorphize. It is simply how our minds are put together, a tool for survival, and while it leads us down many blind alleys, it seems to work on average.

When you look into cognitive linguistics, you will find that there is no such thing as "just an expression". You may not mean an expression literally, but there surely are nearly infinite figurative phrases one could choose to express a given idea, and the one you wind up using can tell us a great deal about how our brains process the world around us. I will turn to Steven Pinker for an example:

We humans speak a great deal about abstract concepts, and in fact many people think this ability is a defining characteristic of human intellect. But let's tease apart the actual words and phrases we use to describe our abstract concepts. We get to the point, but it may take a great length of time to do so because the depth of human intellect is a very broad subject.

Point, length, depth, breadth; words that tie our abstract concepts directly to the physical world our minds have evolved in. They are just expressions, but there are reasons we chose those terms. An electron is a particle, except when it is a wave. In reality it is neither, but we describe its behavior in terms of aspects of the physical world we are familiar with. As long as the physical analogy is sufficiently accurate to allow us to predict how a thing will behave, we don't need to know it's true nature. Being able to know what the electron will do next is good enough.

Awesome read. Did you come up with this observation by yourself, or is it something you put together along with reading or class? I've definitely noticed the same thing, how people explain things they can't understand with a god. It makes it easier to understand how the idea of a god would make sense when civilizations don't yet have science and education, or to ourselves before we understood the world around us. Imagine living ten-thousand years ago and seeing lighting. Literally some crazy massive bolt of light reaches down from the sky and let's off a massive roar. That would be absolutely unexplainable without the thousands of years of observations of the world around us by our ancestors, which eventually attributed to our current understanding(or model) of the world around us.

How did I arrive at what I wrote? At the risk of oversimplification, I'll have to say my influences are a lifelong devotion to skepticism and figuring out how things work. There have been classes, six years of engineering mixed with philosophy of mind and information theory. There has been about 25 years of reading on sociology, cognitive psychology, philosophy, linguistics, theory of mind, religious philosophies, anything to do with what makes people and other animals tick at a cognitive level and also what constitutes our subjective experience.

Starting at age 13 I had a revelation and declared myself an atheist (the revelation, after years of religious schooling, was that I could reject what I had been taught, and no one could stop me!)

For years I was not only an atheist but a rabid anti-theist, but with age and experience I came to realize that the god/no god debate was not only pointless (both positions are equally non-disprovable hypotheses) but is an intellectual dead-end. (and also really annoying)

I realized that god(s) clearly do exist. The evidence of their influence is everywhere, but they exist in the same way that money, love, Harry Potter and other shared abstract concepts exist.

The question that should occupy us is not whether gods exist, but rather what is their nature, how do they work? Why do we invent them? What is it about the workings of the human mind that leads us to assume they exist, to need them? At this point in questioning the world around me, I ran smack into cognitive psychology, theory of mind, and linguistics.

Self awareness is often held above all as what separates us from the animals, however I can find no evidence that there is a hard threshold between non aware and self aware, and I will also argue that we humans are not nearly as self aware as we like to think.

Study upon study has shown that our waking, conscious self is not calling the shots. Rather it is much older portions of our brains that determine our actions, and the conscious mind is mostly left to formulate plausible motivations that match our internal model of ourselves. The conscious mind can wrest control for short periods, but when push comes to shove, it is the subconscious that takes the wheel. We call this phenomenon emotion.

Whenever asked what I think separates us from the animals, I am left with only one thing to say. Humans are the only animal with the need for self deception. We are the only animal that needs to think it is somehow different from all the others, and we are very, very good at it.

EDIT: I forgot to include among my influences a period of heavy psychoactive drug use. I didn't have any mystic "revelations" or stuff like that. No truths were revealed, rather it was un-truths that became visible. Drugs aren't for everyone and I will likely never return to them, but they taught me that the world I perceive as so real and certain ain't necessarily so. For the most part, we see what we expect to see. Drugs pointed out the cracks and poorly patched joints between the world we live in and our perception of ourselves in it. I found no answers in drugs. It was more like poking a hornet's nest of questions. Decades later, I'm still being stung.

It's like how you have a computer that does one thing, or a specific set of functions, like a smartphone, can do them more efficiently with less resources than a PC that can do anything. It's hardware processing, not software processing, if that makes any sense.

[–]Solsavage 2 points3 points ago

it may be very simplistic. Think of it like how Sharks allow cleaner fish to chill with them, the shark may have registered the boy as "no threat, no food, good for me"

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think that's an example of symbiotic evolution rather than an individual connection.

[–]Solsavage 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

i know, i was trying to use it as an illustration of how the shark may perceive the boy as being neither a threat or a food source.

[–]zanycaswell 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It probably helps that this is a nurse shark (or a similar species) which is one of the chillest sharks in the ocean. They're bottom feeders, who mainly eat crustaceans and mollsucs, and are not a threat to humans. Many commonly dived reefs have "tame" nurse sharks that interact with divers,

[–]gen-bullmoose 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This! When I was little there was a nurse shark living in the bay with which kids would allegedly do this. This was pre-Jaws, so that probably helped allay any fears. I hated getting in the water for any reason, so I never tried it myself.

I think you would have to define what you mean by connection. I have had fish tanks for many years, and my fish got to know me. I could stick my face up to the glass and they didn't care, I even had one fish tha would swim to the surface and let me stroke its body with two fingers down both its sides at once.

However, the moment anyone else walked into the room within 12 or so feet of the tank, the fish always got very disturbed and flighty.

Also, take a look at this video, cross-posted from r/scuba if you doubt fish can connect with humans. https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/tgop6ARIZToT4MIaU4DJ_g?feat=directlink

Apparently: "This fish is named Benny, he's been hanging around at the dive spot for 6 years (Cayman Brac) and actively follows divers around."

Here's the corresponding link: "THE BAJAU LAUT"

Please check out the other photos and the stories behind them. It's fascinating!

EDIT1: The caption of this photo on the above website: "Whilst few young children are now born on boats, the ocean is still very much their playground and whilst they are getting conflicted messages from their communities, who simultaneously refrain from spitting in the ocean and continue to dynamite its reefs, I still believe they could play a crucial role in the development of western marine conservation practices. Here Enal plays with his pet shark, Wangi Wangi, Indonesia."

EDIT2: And again, from the same photographer's website, another caption: "In order to get around the problem of equalising (a technique used by scuba divers to balance the pressure of the inner and outer ear at depth) it is common practice amongst Bajau to *intentionally burst their eardrums at an early age*. The trade off is deafness in old age. Sulawesi, Indonesia."

This reminds me of a movie I saw when I was a kid. The boy fed the baby sharks and the elders didn't want to get attached to them so they poisoned the hole that they were in. It turns out that the baby shark escaped and finds the little boy when he grows up and I guess they became close friends since the shark didn't eat him. Time to scan imdb for it.

edit: I couldn't find an entry nor via google search. I think the film is late 70's or early 80s and can not recall if I saw it on TV or even in school. It wasn't a full length movie as far as I can remember.
