Ali was such a trash talker, but a complete badass that could back it up. One of my favorite examples of this is from The Rumble In The Jungle event when he fought Foreman.

From the wikipedia page: Ali continued to taunt him by saying "They told me you could punch, George!" and "They told me you could punch as hard as Joe Louis." According to Foreman, near the end of the fight, Foreman slammed Ali with a thundering body blow, and Ali whispered to him "Is that all you got, George?" to which Foreman thought "Yep...that's about it." After that, Ali began to dominate Foreman.

I assume it's Muhammad Ali? I have heard he was the best boxer, but not being a boxing fan it's the first time I've actually seen him in a fight. Very impressive.

Yes. I watched him when he was still Cassius Clay. Loudmouth SOB, but man he had the skills to back it up.

Your pants are waiting in the hall, sir. Joe Frazier.

On Ali being picked to light the torch in the Olympics:

"I should have been picked. I wish Ali had fallen into [the flame]. If I had the chance, I'd have pushed him in."

[–]Immynimmy 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well in fairness, that was when they were bitter rivals. Plus Frazier was like that with every guy he faced.

[–]go_ninja_go 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Ali lit the torch in 1996 - 21 years after their last match. I'd say Frazier is still a little bitter.

[–]Immynimmy 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

After years of remaining bitter, Frazier told Sports Illustrated in May 2009 that he no longer held hard feelings for Ali.

Per wiki.

[–]bombus_ruderatus 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

check out this awesome documentary about the rivalry, told mostly from the Frazier camp's perspective. It definitely had an impact on my opinion of Ali. I still have a lot of respect for him and there is no doubt he was an incredible athlete, but he really did take the piss with Frazier.

More than anything though it caused my respect for Joe Frazier to sky-rocket, as a fighter and for his sheer determination, especially that final fight in Manila. By the end of the doc you can definitely see that Joe still harbours some bitterness, though I hear he's chilled out a bit recently.

They were both giants of the sport, would love to see heavyweight boxing of that calibre in modern times. Epic doc though, check it out.

[–]theGreyjoy 14 points15 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Dude was utterly disrespectful. Listening to him berate some of his predecessors and contemporaries is difficult to watch. The levels of ignorance and disrespect is enough to make you feel embarrassed for him. Watch the HBO doc's on the Thrilla in Manilla and Joe Louis, then talk about what a great guy Muhammad Ali is.

[–]NinjaSupplyCompany 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I loved it. Nothing wrong with some good trash talk. He knew what he was doing. He got them mad. Then come fight time they would come out and try to knock his head off. He would dodge and dance away and hug them until they did not have the strength to keep punching then Ali would knock them out.

All according to plan.

I have no boxing knowledge.

How hard is what Ali's doing? Does he know beforehand that those punches are coming, or does he react as he sees them?

What goes through Frazier's mind when he misses over and over? How tiring is that?

[–]MinervaDreaming 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Does he know beforehand that those punches are coming, or does he react as he sees them?

A combination of both. An important part of training (in most competitive sports, really) is studying tape of your opponent. Something like this is often a combination of knowing particular patterns that your opponent likes to use and reacting on the fly.

[–]frickingphil 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

He's reacting as he sees them. From what i've heard, you learn to 'read' the other person's actions that lead up to them throwing a punch...with enough training it becomes a reflex and you don't have to think about it.

[–]Bretturd 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

There shouldn't be any actions leading to a punch, that's called telegraphing and will get you knocked out.

hence... the... dodg... ing?

[–]LilDrumrGrl 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's supposed to just be impressive. And boxing has no script so no, he doesn't 'know' the punches are coming. As frickingphil said, he's just reacting and dodging. But what's impressive is how many he dodges at once while making it seem so effortless.

It's similar to a karate-master who sidesteps an attacker casually without fighting back because he can just evade and take no damage while frustrating the opponent. A large part of boxing seems to be making the other person miss, frustrating them, and then capitalizing on the mistakes they will make due to their frustration and inability to hit you.

[–]onrust 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Thought a large part of boxing is how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward

[–]LilDrumrGrl 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

True, that's another good technique for frustrating and lowering your opponent's morale. But not getting hit is great technique too. That's how Apollo Creed fought, since we're talking Rocky now. "Lightning fast and hard to catch", that's how he described himself.

[–]onrust 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

hha I firmly believe that not getting hit is the smartest tactic :)

[–]Floyd_Pinkerton 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Creed's character in Rocky I was actually modeled after Ali, with Rocky playing the role of Chuck Wepner; wiki says many 'believe' it, but I saw a special on ESPN back in the day where they said Stallone's inspiration for the movie came directly from the Ali v Wepner fight

[–]LilDrumrGrl 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I can completely believe that Apollo was modeled after Ali. The fighting style (dodging almost exactly like in this .gif) and his propensity to be loud, outspoken, and talk a lot of shit, they all fit Ali's character.

I didn't know about Rocky being modeled after Wepner though. Didn't even really know who Wepner was. I find boxing very interesting but I can't say I'm that knowledgeable about it. I know the big names and fights and movies, not much little known trivia. Thanks for the cool information.

[–]Pagan-za 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

As a martial artist, its easy to predict what is coming and get ready to move out the way. A persons stance shows exactly what they are going to do, and often you have quite a bit of warning before it happens.

As for the dodging around, in the gif, you'll see that its almost as if he lets the guy graze his chin everytime, but all he's really doing is moving just far enough back to be out of his reach. Again, once you have an idea of a guys range, its actually really easy to do.

As for Frazier, it is actually tiring when your blows dont land. Punches are aimed so that there is an apex to it, but when you miss, you hyper-extend, and after a while it starts to hurt your muscles, as well as wears them out quickly.

[–]Nocterro 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

As a person who has trained a little in Krav with people from a range of backgrounds, what stuck me most about boxers was their ability to read my strikes and react with an economy of movement. Conversely they were more difficult for me to read than most others.

Boxing's more focussed than many martial arts, so it makes sense that they get very good at reading movement / not telegraphing.

Ali is overrated. Sugar Ray was a better boxer and Joe Louis was arguably a better heavyweight. Dude had a helluva chin though.

I think he gets so much respect because he refused to go to Vietnam and was (kind of) involved in civil rights. Well even his own manager said he didn't go to Vietnam because he was a puppet of the Nation of Islam, and the way he taunted Frazier is beyond forgivable. If a white man had said it he would have been lynched.

If you watch the old documentary about one of his really late comebacks (can't remember the name, the one where he's at a camp) he literally looks and talks like he's drunk. He's already pretty severely brain damaged and still fighting. You can say the rope-a-dope worked pretty well against Foreman and Frazier but those guys can both still talk (well Frazier can talk as much as he ever could anyway.)

You don't know anything about boxing at all if you think Joe Frazier was a better boxer. Frazier gave Ali fits, but his career wasn't even close to Ali's.

Ali lost the prime of his career and seriously degraded his skills to make a principled stand against the war in Vietnam. I think that gives him the edge in the "solid dude" department over Frazier's Schlitz Malt Liquor ads.

I like Joe Frazier a lot, but the only reason anybody remembers him is because of Ali. They were on completely different levels.

Also, it's inappropriate to call him "Clay." He changed his name for a reason and that decision should be respected.

[–]MikePriceWrites 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Great response to that ridiculous statement. I'm from Philly, and I love Joe Frazier, but Ali is truly my biggest hero and favorite cultural figure of all time. He had it all, the skills, the showmanship, and as you mentioned, the courage to sacrifice the prime of his career standing up for what he believed in.

[–]AMcNair 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Ali is one of the few athletes/celebrities I will vigorously defend against those kinds of statements. I couldn't give a shit what people think about most athletes, even the ones I respect and admire. But I've always had a great deal of admiration for Ali.
