This should definitely be near the top.

-edit- If it does get near the top, everyone that sees this should meander on over towards r/Lovecraft in order to get their fill of Cthulhu related...things.

I'm more curious what Emperor Palpentine is doing on the right edge....

[–]Cyrius 14 points15 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The people in the lower right are all "bad".

The prominent one in the black robes is a judge repenting for decisions like Roe v. Wade and Everson v. Board of Education. Among the others we also see a pregnant woman (presumably a single mother who wants an abortion), a guy counting money, a guy too busy talking on the phone to adore Jesus, and a guy holding a copy of Darwin's The Origin of Species. There's also a reporter focusing on the judge (not Jesus) and some guy who is just hanging out (and not adoring Jesus).

"Palpatine" represents the lurking presence of evil corrupting those people.

[–]SexySorcerer 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Palpatine is Satan, according to the key on the website. What you said pretty much sums up the role he has been put into as christianity has "developed" over the years, though.

This story might be relevant: http://www.npr.org/2011/08/24/139781021/the-evangelicals-engaged-in-spiritual-warfare

[because they believe that the] reason why there is sin and corruption and poverty on the Earth is because the Earth is controlled by a hierarchy of demons under the authority of Satan.

Something i find funny about this is that Abraham Lincoln and Thomas Jefferson were atheists.

[–]SweetNeo85 2 points3 points ago

Jefferson wasn't an atheist per se. He was a deist. He believed in a generic creator, but was against the tyranny of organized religion.

L-o-fucking-l at Frederick Douglass making an appearance in the back of the original. His narrative is one of my favorite books, and one of the purposes of the narrative is to highlight the role that religion played in perpetuating his enslavement.

I can see no reason, but the most deceitful one, for calling the religion of this land Christianity. I look upon it as the climax of all misnomers, the boldest of all frauds, and the grossest of all libels. Never was there a clearer case of "stealing the livery of the court of heaven to serve the devil in." I am filled with unutterable loathing when I contemplate the religious pomp and show, together with the horrible inconsistencies, which every where surround me. We have men-stealers for ministers, women whippers for missionaries, and cradle-plunderers for church members.

For a little while, I was confused as to why the "college student" was included amongst the saved. Then I looked up the book he was holding: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Five_Thousand_Year_Leap

I guess the "college" in "college student" refers only to schools like Bob Jones University

I don't understand why "Marbury v. Madison, 1803" is a "notorious case". Without it no law could be found unconstitutional, thus the constitution would have virtually no effect. Apparently Satan supports a system of checks and balances. Good to know.

Like the artist, Jon McNaughton, Lincoln is now a Mormon! So are all the signers of the Declaration of Independence, most dead US presidents, Malcolm X, Lee Harvey Oswald (and Jack Ruby too; awkward...) and even George Carlin.

Those last four were presumably just baptized by individual members, who would have been acting against church policy, which discourages them to do temple work for celebrities and other people who aren't their own ancestors, but all those founding fathers and US Presidents were taken care of by a Prophet of God, Wilford Woodruff, to whom those good fellows appeared in vision one night, asking why he had as yet to let them into the club.

(Woodruff didn't baptize Buchanan, Van Buren, and Grant; I guess God didn't like the first two because of their anti-Mormon policies, and the third because he was supposedly a drunk, or something like that.)

[–]hobbit6 38 points39 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think my favorite part is how the "artist" must have thought, "Hmmm...Maybe I was too subtle. Better add a key to all of the symbols." This one's my favorite.

I think it's pretty funny. Our current economic troubles are Obama's fault. The economic success during Clinton's time in office was just a delayed effect of Reagan though.

[–]DrEvyl666 5 points6 points ago

You won't convince me that the people pushing that agenda within the government are not stupid. The ones paying them to push it are another story, but I'll never believe people like George W. Bush, Sarah Palin, Michele Bachmann, and Rick Perry are anything short of morons.

See, you have played RIGHT into their game. These utter nonsense issues are where the battle lines are drawn so that the true battle is never, ever waged. [–]EncasedMeats 1 point2 points ago

what are the best books about Cthulu to read, or games to play? I see him referenced all the time, and have tried to look up books, but I really don't know what is considered to be good and "Canon". I'd love to find out about this if anyone wants to fill me in! thanks! :)

Read The Rats in the Walls. It's not Cthulhu-related, but it's (in my opinion) the best thing Lovecraft ever wrote. If you're interested in Cthulhu, then Call of Cthulhu is where you should start.

I think part of the trouble is it's short stories. Get a copy of the Necronomicon, it's a collection of his short stories. Arkham Horror is a fun, co-operative board game in the Cthulu mythos.

The guy who did this posted it to his account on deviant art. This isn't the first time it's been on reddit. Search for Unites states of cthulu. I think that was what the original post was called, and it linked to the deviantart page.

This is a re-imaging of One Nation Under God contrasting the imagery intended to be inspirational as something grotesque. However, I find the Cthulhu version fitting for today's religious-political climate in America and the original more disturbing.

All those liberal types are on the right because it's Jesus' left, or his hand of judgment as Judeo-Christian lore would teach. I get why the stupid artist would put all the others in that spot, but the pregnant girl? That's pretty fucked up as it suggests that merely the act of being pregnant is somehow sinful or wrong. What a jackass.

I usually defend religion, but I found the picture, though attempting to be eye-catching, poignant. In America's case I would say that religion has not been properly seperated from the State, and whereas in some cases religion coming to the forefront of people's minds can result in good humanistic feelings, it can be at other times, be a form of oppression, brutal in its terrorization. America's "Right" have unfortunately come under the spell of the general evangelical movement. For the vast majority of people who believe in religion, this evangelical movement is not valuable, good, or in the public's interest. When religion becomes a form of oppression instead of a vehlice to freedom, peace, and joy, it loses its societal value. The Right do not see a loving God (simmer down, person; place; or thing...) and whether or not the Left does, it doesn't matter, the State shouldn't. Anyways, rambling on trees.
