I have posed this question among peers. In birding, for example, the red-tailed hawk (which is widespread on the North American continent) has at least 14 recognized subspecies, yet nearly all of them are known to interbreed and there is much overlap among their ranges.

How is this any different than human self-identification of "race", which is largely similar in "selection criteria", even while there are many social judgments made between humans based on such distinctions above and beyond cultural identities.

Race is basically just subspeciation in humans based on morphology, which is how subspecies were classified before genetics overtook morphology in taxonomy anyway. I don't think there is a difference.

I completely agree. I should add, however, that morphology remains a major component in determining species/subspecies. This is a very prevalent driving force in birding, and is coupled with observations and comparisons/contrasts in bird behavior. There is also some continued to resistance to a purely genetic approach to the concept of speciation.

Based on the subspecies concept, one would readily be able to distinguish many human "subspecies", such as Khoisan, Pygmy, non-specific African, South Asian, Malay, East Asian, central asian?, and various european "types". There may also be Polynesian, Australian Aboriginal, many New Guinean, and North/South American subspecies.

I have often wondered if it were possible that some human "subspecies" might be so different that they actually had reproduction issues...

Rapid edit: my naming of "subspecies" should be taken with a grain of salt, naturally, since there are many reasons why these could be mistaken for a kind of racism. Most likely, the concept of subspeciation, if applied to humans, would require an entirely different naming system, for many reasons.

Yes too true:P I've taken a course in Advanced Phylogenetics and spent most of my academic career in evolutionary biology, during which I've definitely met quite a few old-school taxonomists who are quite opposed to a purely genetic approach and often for good reason. If there was only some way to merge morphological characteristics with genomic data during phylogeny construction....

This is all a matter of continued research, IMO. We can get pretty far with speciation on morphological characteristics alone, and genetic data remains relatively costly. This sort of reminds me of Mendeleev and identifying the elements by atomic mass rather than number of protons.

Yeah, the joke kinda falls flat when you think about it. All sorts of applications have a part about classifying your own ethnicity (caucasian, african-american, southeast asian, etc) and it's not considered racist (used mostly for demographic purposes). It's not racist until you take those classifications and apply stereotypes or prejudices to them.

tldr; It's not racist to be able to differentiate between black and white, only once you act negatively on that difference.

I think you're reading the history a bit backwards.

The way I understand it racism came first. Western Europeans in particular, upon discovering the comparably primitive African civilization, concluded very quickly that people who looked different than they did and lacked modern technology must be inherently primitive. This was an important perspective for anyone who wanted to try and justify the slave trade.

Basically, once an entire industry and certain regional economies had been built upon these very simple and ignorant assumptions there was an imperative among many to rationalize it. The "science" you refer to wasn't often science at all as we would understand it. It was a study defined entirely by confirmation bias, a willful seeking of evidence to support a preconceived and nonnegotiable conclusion. In these circles everyone knew that black people were biologically distinct from white men. For them it was just a matter of finding the right evidence to prove it. Making that point, after all, was fundamentally necessary to reaching the real matter they sought to prove, that people of races other than their own were less than human.

The good news is that actual science successfully put an end to all of that. The work of such men was inevitably challenged and tested by others who quickly discovered its utter lack of substance. Eventually we had to face the inescapable truth that their is no scientific basis for race, that it is a social construct, and that, having convinced ourselves otherwise, we had been committing for centuries some of the most deplorable and inhumane acts in human history on a massive scale.

TL;DR: The science of classifying things isn't racism though racism was once a reason some people perverted the science of classifying things.

To be fair, I didn't say one created the other. What we're talking about occurred over hundreds of years. State forms, economic systems, science, and racism all developed together over a long period of time.

I don't know if science saved us from racism. Race was a construction all along, and many are all too happy to keep it up. (mostly social-) Science made great strides at reforming itself and eliminating race as basis of judgment, but even those good habits come under attack from certain... positivists, I guess. People who want to will always be able to look for more data to validate their racial ideas. The problem, whatever the data say, is why they do it and what their aims and moral imperatives are.

Social sciences still have huge problems with confirmation bias. "Real" science hasn't come along and saved us, it doesn't work that way in the social arena; we have to deal with subjectivity and value judgments.

The aspect of science that is classifying things has been applied to race and that was racist science, and it is not a minor inheritance at all. Those ideas and attitudes were part of the worldview of the writers of history for the hundreds of years during which civilization as we know it came to be. Our social systems are fundamentally based on those ideas, and ending slavery obviously did not do away with them.

TL;DR: The western world is still racist.

Anyway, in case you were wondering, people who respect science shouldn't really care what anyone's opinion is on matters of fact. It's the evidence that supports their opinion that counts.

I really don't care about your motives, as they're irrelevant to the truth of your beliefs.

That said, I do doubt your ability to think clearly. You keep talking about how much "study" of "the subject" you've done, but when pressed for evidence, the best you could come up with was a few victorian era books and a link to a few paragraphs listing the personal opinions of one guy (accomplished as he is, his opinion means nothing if it's not backed up with evidence). That naive allegiance to authority suggests to me that you don't really even know how to go about thinking about how to find truth...so whatever "study" you've done is likely to have led you further astray if it's had any effect at all.
