Get the dummies guide to DSLR photography. Seriously, it's good stuff.

Are you talking about the Pentax k1000 in the picture or the Canon eos that op is talking about?

Remember this: A good camera does not make a good photographer, a good eye makes a good photographer.

I'm a Nikon guy here (D90 plus a bunch of fancy lenses and crap) but I will still try to help j/k. Anyway, with DSLR's, you have to learn about photography. There is no getting around it because even if you stay in Auto mode, most DSLR's default settings are conservative because they assume you will post process.

Read the manual.

Get a book by Bryan Peterson called Understanding Exposure. Learn it, try it, and get out of auto mode and into manual mode. Or at least semi-manual mode.

Read the manual again after reading that book.

Join flickr's photography groups.

Get out and shoot, day and night.

Find every dvd and tutorial.

I love that book, it explained so much to me. After reading it I put my camera in manual and left it there for about 2 years, until I felt I fully understood what was going on in the camera. Now I shoot mostly in aperture priority for the sake of speed. I'll sometimes switch to manual if I feel the camera hasn't picked the right shutter speed, I'm usually wrong.

I got the same camera back in December, also my first DSLR. Here's my advice:

  • Don't let yourself use live view unless absolutely necessary. There's no reason to treat the DSLR as a P&S. Learn to love the viewfinder.
  • RTFM! Learn what all the buttons are for and when to use them. (I'll admit, I still don't know exactly what the one under the lens release is for)
  • Carry it around with you as much as possible, and experiment a lot in different environments and lighting conditions.
  • Considering shooting in RAW mode, as long as you have some software for "developing" the shots afterwards, like Lightroom. I shoot exclusively in RAW mode now. Also, consider noise reduction software like Neat Image.
  • Don't worry about upgrading your lens until you are comfortable with the body and shooting in general. The kit lens isn't half bad.
  • When you do upgrade your lens, research what lens will work best for the shooting you do. People will swear by different lenses, but if you need good zoom, or good low light, etc., theirs may not work for you.
  • Spend some time here

Hope this helps some.

Do you feel like this too?

[–]Bluenarwhal[S] 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Why yes. I googled "I have no idea what i'm doing" and this was the first image that came up. I'm not trying to take credit for the photo, just the fact that I look and feel like a complete idiot as I fumble with my new camera.

The very first thing you should do is go and get one of these: http://www.amazon.com/Canon-50mm-1-8-Camera-Lens/dp/B00007E7JU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1313923967&sr=8-1

Out of the box it will take better pictures than your kit lens and once you learn to use it properly, your pics will be even better :)

You know I see so many people with great DSLR bodies (7D/600D/etc) and I don't think they've ever taken off the stock lens.

Damn shame.

I have a Nikon D5000 i bought at a great price as they were being discontinued. With the kit lens and a few tweaks it is way above anything else I have used before. Lenses for it seem to be about the same as the price I paid for the entire kit with 2 lenses. For an amateur with decent equipment is it really worth it?

People with a 5d, always using auto mode and the built-in flash in the middle of the day.

Completely agree, it's built like a kid's toy so you have to be careful with it, but the glass is good and it takes great pictures, plus it's dirt cheap.

Beyond that, it's worth spending money on good glass, as it's the most important bit of the whole setup, it doesn't matter how good the body is if the light going into it is messed up by a rubbish lens.

Nothing except YOU make the pictures better. This is a slippery slope, once u got into the thinking of "oh this lens will make everything so much better. I must buy it!" You are already chasing after things that don't matter in photography. Sure an expensive lens makes unique picture but doesn't mean it's good. Focus instead on composition, light and storytelling.

I get what you're saying, but I have to disagree, I'm pretty sure getting a DSLR over, say, a phone camera will make my pictures better.

When I got my first DSLR (Sony A100) the kit lens' were pretty damn poor. Getting the cheap 50mm 1.7 I saw basically the same improvement again that I got when moving from a P&S to the DSLR+Kit

I got the kit that came with the 18-135mm lens, but this might be worth looking in to

Pro level photographer here.

This is actually bad advice.

This is what we used to tell people to buy for film slr cameras before the digital versions were cheap and ubiquitous.

The canon crop sensor is about 1.6, so the 50mm lens is going to give you an angle of view equivalent to about an 80mm on a full frame / film camera. A short telephoto is not really a very good versatile 1-lens solution. I use Nikon, so don't know what Canon offers, but something that works out to a 35mm to 50mm equivalent would be better. I know Canon has a 24mm f1.4, but that's way out of any beginner's price range.

[–]Bluenarwhal[S] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

thanks, I'll stick to the lens I have for now, unless there is a more affordable recommendation than the Canon 24mm f1.4

[–]somethings 0 points1 point ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Nikon makes a 35mm f1.8 that would be a good bet. Not sure if Canon offers a relatively cheap fast normal prime. Take a look. Also look at third party manufacturers like sigma.

The biggest problems you're going to have with the kit lens are: 1. focusing in dark conditions 2. slow shutter speeds in dark conditions. But it should be fine for you outdoors and so on.

[–]noisymime 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

50mm isn't perfect on a crop sensor I agree, but if there's a better bang-for-buck lens out there for a beginner, I'm yet to find it.

[–]somethings 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You're right, the 50mm lenses are great value that is hard to beat. But it's not the right lens for a 1 lens kit on a dslr. It would be a good part of a 2 lens kit that also includes something for a reasonably wide angle of view. If this were film, I might say a 24 or 28, or maybe a 35 plus an 85 for a 2-lens kit. So, on digital with a 50mm, a 20mm might do, but a little wider might be better.

[–]Black_Fag 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's a good lens for a beginner, but you'll realize with time that it's not very quick to focus and it's quite "cheap" ?

[–]noisymime 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

True, its still far from a pro lens and it does have its drawbacks, but it was the lens that made me understand how different lens' allow different types of photos etc. I moved on fairly quickly to a f2.8 17-50, but I never would've bought that 2nd lens if I hadn't had the 50mm to learn with.

[–]Black_Fag 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I completely agree. And I think that's what Canon made the lens for, a semi-step into good photography.

f2.8 17-50 That's also the one I want.

Or even better, get the 1.4f. It's more expensive, but the build quality is a lot better than the 1.8, so it's worth the money!!

Everyone here is giving you awesome advice. Mine is start shooting manual riiiiight awaaaay!!! Get a nifty-fifty and shoot shoot shoot everyday. Save a least two of the shots you take. Never delete everything because it's crap. Look at them every couple of month and see how you ve improved.

When I first got my DSLR I started taking pictures of the same object in different lighting, distance, and exposure. When all of those turned out decent, I moved on to actual shit.

Sadly, I had to sell it to pay rent. I do miss it from time to time.

Since purchasing my girlfriend a T2i for her birthday last October, I am now the owner of my very own 7D, Tokina 11-16 2.8, 24-70 2.8L, 85mm 1.8, and have also borrowed a 24-105L and 70-200 2.8 IS.

Shit is crazy addictive, once you figure out Manual mode, it is all fun from there.
