sorry to hijack the top comment, but Malwarebytes' Anti-malware Pro picks up the domain in this post (hrphotocontest.com) as malicious. granted, it could be a false-positive, but Domain Tools shows this IP is shared with a few other domains (14 total), including balkanphotocontest.com. hmmmm, curious. social engineering at its finest?

i'm not sure who Tomislav Krnic, the owner of the domains is, but after seeing A) Malwarebytes' pick this IP up as malicious and B) seeing the other "photo contest" domains on the same IP, i just wanted to warn my fellow Redditors. i'd hate for a malicious site to make it to the front page of Reddit, spreading viruses to thousands and leading unsuspecting users into being part of a botnet.

if i'm wrong, i apologize, but i figured it's better to be safe than sorry. there's a reason MBAM has this IP on its blacklist.

yeah, i'm leaning toward this is a bogus site. i'm sure there are a lot of legit photo contests coming out of Russia, hosted on servers in Amsterdam, but this does NOT appear to be a legit contest. :D

amazing that 7,742 people have hit this post. i wonder what the percentage of infected systems is out of that lot?

i'm not surprised Norton Safe Web didn't find anything. Malwarebytes' is a unique application and it's pretty good at NOT generating false positives. the crew at Malwarebytes' look for more than just a "virus." I'll contact MBAM directly and see if they have more info on the IP.

look at it from a social engineering perspective though - multiple "photo contest" sites on the same server. i'm not saying it is, 100%, which is why i'm willing to believe it COULD be a valid site. AVG and Norton aren't tools i'm going to look to though for the threats that slide through that small sliver of 'space' Malwarebytes' keeps an eye on.

Hmmm. I'm just wondering if Malwarebites has associated that domain with attacks rather than actually having received an attack.....

Also, would the type of browser make a difference, i.e. Chrome vs. Firefox vs. Internet Explorer?

thanks again for replying, mike10010100. this isn't related to the browser - it's the IP that is on a blacklist. makes no difference if you try Chrome, IE or FF.

i think a lot of people misunderstand what Malwarebytes' is, as compared to antivirus software - they are not the same. there's a reason MBAM has this IP on its blacklist. while the other antivirus companies are looking for virus signatures and changes to files, MBAM is looking for a few other things. those bogus .info sites and other crap people run into on 4chan, are the "bleeding edge" of where threats come in from. Norton, AVG, McAfee, etc. simply do not keep up with those threats. i compare Norton and McAfee to Burger King and McDonald's - just because everyone knows of them doesn't mean they make *good food. =)

i've emailed MBAM directly to see why this particular IP is on their blacklist.

i'm trying to not jump to conclusions but that domain name, the other domain name, hosting in Amsterdam and the owner's name all seem to point to a possible social engineering front.

What I do not understand is why people are downvoting me. I'm just asking questions and having a civil discussion.

Thank you for educating me. Up until now, I had not heard about Malwarebytes.

And the only reason I mentioned the difference in browser is because it could have something to do with the sandboxing in certain browsers curtailing some virus attacks.

all good, mikey. Malwarebytes' is a fantastic program and i highly recommend it. the free version is great for removing infections, but pay the $25 for the Pro version - those guys/gals deserve it. plus, there's a 20% off promo code (SN9-8VM-R5K) making it even less expensive.

i highly recommend not using programs such as AVG or Microsoft Security Essentials; nor Norton or McAfee. i've been through them all and the only antivirus program that A) keeps me protected, B) doesn't slow my system down, C) doesn't unnecesserily prompt/nag or D) generate false-positives, is ESET Nod32 Antivirus. it is well worth it, it truly is. F the other security programs. G-Data has scored quite high as well, but ESET has yet to do me wrong. ESET + Malwarebytes' and you can surf Reddit like those kids on the cover of that Internet book picture, all riding keyboards and shit. :D

The size and distance from Earth to the Sun and the size and distance from Earth to some dandelions are perfectly balanced resulting in the dandelions and sun appearing to be exactly the same size in the sky and enabling pretty eclipses to occur, there is no other dandelion around any other known planet with this feature, pretty eclipses are limited to Earth... and my heart.
