What's scarier: An Orwellian Society or A Brave New World? (imgur.com)

What's scarier is what we already have; a bit of both.

Both these men were brilliant skeptical visionaries. the fact is we have a choice, we can be paranoid and isolated or egotistical and well at the same time isolating...the secret is finding the balance between safety and excitement, humility and pride. I think too many of the youth of today (one of which i am) fall into the latter...boastful bastards ready to show the world "we got this" or "you don't know me" type of attitude, and our parents (the b-boomer gen.) fall into the former again a sort of prideful paranoia; comfort in the tranquility of a stagnant outlook on life. While these are stark generalizations, the point I'm making is clear; if your not vigilant and keen, you will fall into on of these mens' nightmares...waking up is half done while your still alseep....

Question: If it was your responsibility to teach the youth of tomorrow to be "vigilant and keen" how would you go about instilling this approach?
[–]deep_thinker 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
It is and has been my responsibility. I have spent many years teaching about understanding media (media literacy, media awareness, how to be a smart consumer of media). Since we live in a media centric world, I feel this is the sharpest tool to give a student - shit, we even wage war with media these days...
Parents have a huge impact on the skepticism (or lack thereof) of their children. What say you about adults who have no apparent interest in understanding their information sources?
[–]deep_thinker 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
First off, there's a difference between parents who have "no apparent interest", and those who don't possess the skills. One of them can be forgiven.
I have taught adults, as well as young kids and young adults. Most parents over 45 or so grew up with "truthful" media, or so we thought. However, back then, manipulation was new and practiced by few outlets. Ads were first - just try to remember old cigarrette or booze ads - very sexy, smoky, manly, etc. that was the beginning, whether it was intentional or not. On the other hand, you had Walter Cronkite, and other newsmen who were so honest and straightforward, that you believed, no, trusted what they said.
Funny thing is - we can see manipulation when it is NOT directed at us. i.e. marketing to minorities, the elderly, etc. When they sell cars and phones and appliances, we really notice it less (adults).
My experience: Little kids are VERY attuned to this as soon as they see it. I've had 6th graders come back to me as seniors and relate how they consume media differently after my classes. If they see it as teens for the first time, they are VERY skeptical, why?, because almost all the ads in the world are targeted at them! And adults see it as a big evil, aimed at their kids, that they are somehow immune to.
It's a tough thing to illustrate to people. It would be akin to preaching atheism during the middle ages, or even the renaissance. So, no, I don't blame these people, they've been indoctrinated.
Example: How could Fox news be so popular? If you watch it for a little, then go to ANY other station, you will get such a dissonance in headlines, that you'd have to wonder WTF?. How many people do? Most people are too uneducated, overworked, worried, harried, or scared to even care. The thought that their television is lying to them would just be too much. Think about a sports fan who finds out that everything in their favorite sport is fixed - -
I hope I answered your question. I don't have a solution, except that I've devoted some of my life to making people aware of our plight. Get active, there are many outlets, just google. Spread the word.
I belong to a group called ACME (no coyote). Action Coalition for Media Education. There are many others, some good. It's' not the kind of thing that gets funded, esp. now.
Well, you're teaching critical thinking - it's contagious once instilled, but definitely easier taught at an early age.
I've only talked to one Fox news fan specifically about why he watched. His says since all news is biased he'd rather watch a program that is slanted toward his opinions. Confirmation bias at it's best.
I distinctly remember my moment of revelation when discovering that history is written by the winners... followed immediately by confusion at not having been exposed to this idea earlier. My son is going to kindergarten this year and I plan to get involved in his school system on a small scale, but am not seeing much "action" when browsing through the national organizations' sites. I'll definitely spend some more time searching but are you aware of any large movements or activities that I should know about?
Anyhow - I commend you for your efforts, sir, keep up the good work.
[–]deep_thinker 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
Well, you can imagine the much action being endemic to the system.
Try the National Conference for media reform It's over for this year, but they are the hub of the movement. I attended once and met the guys from the FCC, Denis Kuchinich, and some really cool people.
Seems to me like most of the activity of actually doing is at a very local level, not neccessarily a bad thing.
I like this cartoon but the obvious Huxley bias bothers me a bit. The imagery is less true to the book, instead drawing upon iconography the viewer will recognize and instantly relate to.
[–]khaos4k 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
Agreed. There are definitely some modern Orwell imagery that could be used. Particularly in England. Also that whole terrorist thing.
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
Explain?
Well England is trying it's best to be Big Brother by literally watching your every move with cameras on every street corner. The US is slightly more covert, but is still watching through the guise of anti-terrorism, can lock up anyone deemed a terrorist, and has a constant never-ending war.

I haven't read either of the books, so my opinion is only based off this graphic. I'd be more scared of a "A Brave New World" style world than an Orwellian one. Mostly 'cause I feel that it is easier to get over your fears and gain courage, than it is to turn away from being controlled by pleasure and gain virtue. But I mean hell what do I know /shrug
Well it's the Ministry of Truth vs sex sex sex sex sex sex drugs drugs sex drugs drugs drugs absolute unquestionable class indoctrination sex

the truth isn't gonna do anything but be righteous, its the person who may be against it or for it (the truth, or lack there of, depends on the POV)...your taking yourself out of the equation from my perspective of your outlook. its you against the world, or completely saturated by it...either way its you or someone else....see what i mean?

the people satiated with every pleasure they would want are never going to rebel.

I am of the opinion that they were both a little right. I actually wrote my college entrance essay on this possibility and touched on its repercussions for this society...
