    At first I thought NASCAR was stupid too, But when you really stop to think about it, its like a veeeery long straight (almost) and there are like 50 cars going 300km/h and 15 centimeters to each other (2 inches for nascar lovers).

    Different people have different tastes I suppose, one might also argue that football is just large men running into each other over and over. Believe it or not, there are actual strategies and teams and philosophies regarding how best to win the race.

    If you've tried to watch, and it just didn't mesh well with you, that's totally understandable. But if you've never given it a chance and just think it's dumb, then at least admit you're too uninformed to have an opinion on its merit.

    As someone who enjoys NASCAR, the main draw for me is the physics. Most of the time commentators say dumb shit(what sport doesn't) but when they get to technical talk it is very interesting stuff. It's neat to hear all the wacky shit they do to try and squeeze every drop of power from those engines. The crashes aren't half bad either but they've gotten less cool as the cars get more safe.

    And the people that REALLY like it are the ones who tailgate for it. There is a huge community who just like to sit around and drink with friends while rooting for their favorite driver. It's more of a community thing at that point though.

    Yeah it's a naturally aspirated pushrod V8. The main argument is that they would go too fast. They already have to use a restrictor plate in the large tracks.

    Next logical step would be to remove the restrictions on the body shape to build a faster/safer car...but then you're just going to end up with Indy car I guess :P

    220mph+ without a plate. The plates take them down below 200 IIRC, although they can go faster than that through drafting.

    There's also something undeniably American about the V8 engines they use. Big, loud, powerful, yet simple. It takes people back to the golden age of muscle cars. I really think there would be riots if they changed it.

    It would pretty much be the Le Mans-esque cars (the stock tuned ones, I just can't remember what any of it is called), which is actually a lot of fun to watch. NASCAR is awesome when you can just watch the race without a ton of commentary (I think they have a service with that). I never found the commentary to be all that great.

    Theres different things to love about nascar. for one, if you're in to seeing people push the limits of technology, thats exactly what the drivers are doing. they are pretty much doing extreme driving. theres a whole science behind it that i dont really understand but i'm starting to since i took a professional driving course. and if you arent so much there for the science, it's a good way to hang out with friends. i mean we can argue that nascar is stupid but then we could say the same thing about football. who wants to see a bunch of huge sweaty guys tackle each other and then take a snack break every 10 seconds.

    Except there are many different things that occur in football. Each part of the field has its own very different actions occurring. You can watch the offensive line try to block the defensive line. The corner backs try to cover the wide receivers. The running back try and find holes in the defense. You can look at the offensive play and the defensive play. Was the defense trying to blitz? Are they in zone or man? And all these things happen within 10 seconds. The same play is very rarely repeated.

    The best you could say are slight variations in turns, pits, and passes. I've tried watching. There's just nothing happening in the vast majority of the race.

    While I admit there's probably more going on in football than I know of, im just trying to show the mindset in which people are in when they don't watch nascar, yet make snap judgements about it. Like in football, there are things to watch for in racing. Is one guy trying to ride the vacuum of the driver in front of him? And then is he going to try to pass onthe straightaway or wait for a clear chance on the turn giving him a better lead. Is this other racer going to make it in for a pitstop or will he try running his tires for another lap or two. And then its all about who can keep the lead when an accident does occur so that when the pace keeper gets out of the way, will someone dig in to accelerating to get the upper hand?

    I've tried watching football and all I see is a bunch of big guys tackling each other, taking a snack break every 10 seconds.

    Just because that's just what I see, doesn't mean that's all there is. Most people just ride the bandwagon on hating nascar instead of trying to spend some time figuring out all the different concepts and ideas of it.

    Plus at least car racing is an international sport. Most europeans see football as a typical american sport, having to take breaks so frequently.

    Very well said. I think you bring up a great point. I'm neither into football nor NASCAR, so to me they appear as big men ramming into each other and cars going vroom, respectively. But I know that's just my bias because I'm not into either, and thus I know nothing of their intricacies.

    You're able to elaborate on the complexities of NASCAR, while the guy you're responding to can do the same for football, and I admire both. Every sport has some fans who just mindlessly enjoy the crude elements of the game, and some fans who have a respectable appreciation for the finer points and principles.

    My sport of interest happens to be MMA. To people not into MMA, it just looks like two gorillas flailing their arms until one of them falls down and they end up hugging each other for four minutes. To a diehard fan such as myself, the finely tuned technical aspects of both the striking/standup and grappling/groundgame are as clear as day.

    My dad raced in NASCAR back in the 70s, and while I'm not a fan in any regard, there is a lot more to it than "cars driving in circles." Some of the things I've heard over the years from my dad and other drivers:

    • They lose extreme amounts of weight in their cars

    • They have to think about everything from the fuel, oil pressure, suspension and tires to what the guys in front of them are doing and have to drive by looking through their cars.

    • Not so much relevant today, but in his day a handful of drivers died every year, you just had to hope it wasn't you.

    • Most of the guys had no money, and wrecking the car meant you could be done for most of the year. My dad sold all of his appliances just to be able to make it to a single race.

    • To tune a car to "go in circles" at those speeds, under that much strain is very, very difficult. If it wasn't, everyone would try it. There is so much science going into every car.

    His argument wasn't that it doesn't take skill to drive NASCAR. It most certainly does and shouldn't be nullified in that regard. However, it also takes skill to stick your big toe up your own asshole, but I don't want to watch someone do that, especially if it takes them 4 hours.

      I don't watch Nascar, never have, most likely never will... but who would honestly watch Nascar for the laps? You watch it for the horrific crashes, shit getting lit on fire, and the off chance of debris flying into the audience, and maybe offing a few people.

            I actually think a good solution would be to make the hide button really large next to the title. That way the hide button would be one of the first things you see, and would temper your reaction to the article.

            I want to break all of these down! FYI I dislike most reposts!

            Re-runs: These can be good or bad. If it's been a long time and I liked it before, sometimes I like to see it again. Also, TV shows last longer than most pictures and rage comics and the detail is sometimes missed.

            Still Photography: Unless the photograph reminds me of a person/time/memory or just looks really cool, I generally don't care to see it unless something has been changed or made funny. Or if it's porn. They just have to have meaning to me or some usefulness.

            Deja Vu: This rarely happens to me, but it makes me think I'm crazy when it does happen. This is not like a repost at all. Most of the time, you notice it happening in the middle of the event and then you just feel like a stoner.

            NASCAR: I hate NASCAR, it bores me.

            Exercise: This is also something totally different. Usually there is progress to be made, a different song list, and it is something that will help me.

            Recurring Holidays: No holiday is ever the same. Sometimes the same food, but different experiences and different gifts/costumes/what have you.

            Grapes: Grapes. You can be fed grapes like Hedonism Bot or toss them in the air and try to catch them. More fun than reposts.
