Looking for an image subreddit with minimal rules? Check out /r/images

A place to share interesting photographs and pictures. Feel free to post your own, but please read the rules first (see below), and note that we are not a catch-all for general images (of screenshots, comics, etc.)

Spoiler code

Please mark spoilers like this:

Hover over to read.

Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

You're doing it right. This is the stuff that should be frontpaged on /r/pics, not chili soap.

Seriously. Why the fuck would you watch someone bathe with frozen chili when you can see this instead?

(Never thought I would say such a thing in my life.)

That chili soap thing was vomit inducing.

Do you know if there's any way to get a large poster version of this I could put on my wall? I love this piece and I think it'd make a great decoration, but when I checked the artist's site, it didn't seem to have any options for ordering prints or anything like that. Unless I was just too dense and missed it somewhere.

Link to artist's site here. There's 6 other photographs in the series (that are viewable on the artist's site).

Those pillars of light in the background of the night side are lights from ground zero. Every year on the anniversary of September 11, they shine those bright lights into the sky.

That's so beautiful. 11 years on and I only just learn about it.. it's so fitting. Suitably majestic, grandiose, but more importantly - really tasteful. I could only imagine how seeing them would affect me if I had a personal connection to the attacks.

New York, I stand humbled and deeply impressed.

There is a similar building in Toronto that my great grandfather was the engineer of (Donald Mackenzie Cameron). He was also the engineer for the St Laurence Seaway

Your great grandfather impresses the hell outta me.

[–]Leshow 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Me too. Whenever I go back and visit my parents I go see their massive picture of him in an old school suit right next to a shot of the St Laurence seaway under construction. He married some lady who owned a liquor business and they were riding around in limousines during the Great Depression while everyone else was scrounging for pennies.

A true fucking Boss. He was the reason I took engineering.

There's a restaurant in Columbus, Ohio that's more similar in size to this one. Used to be basically sitting on an island in the road.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Can anyone technically minded explain how this might be done?

I haven't the shots to try it with but am guessing that you are careful to position the camera in the exact same place for both shots - then take one at night and one during the day (or possibly a couple of HDR shots?) then put them one on top of the other in Photoshop and do a gradiant-erase on the uppermost image (daylight in the case of the NYC shot?)

Am I way off or..?

Also notice he only shows taxi's in the final.

[–]couper 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

He says he uses hundreds of shots for 1 photo. I'm guessing that you can divide the photo into 3 parts: day, transition, night. The transition is where he blends the majority of the hundred shots because you need the clouds/sky to match and other parts like the sun on the sidewalks, trees, and buildings fading from light to dark. It also looks like he edits anything not stationary out of the shots and adds it back in after the base image is done. Hence no non-taxis or ghostly people. That's just a guess though... It's probably harder than that.

[–]Kangalooney 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I spent a while figuring out how to do this myself, did some test shots and figured out a good interval and blending method.

Only thing stopping me from doing a full shoot has been a lack of time (photography is just a hobby atm) and the funds to get my camera fixed or replaced as need be. There is a blotch in every shot now that I hope is just a bit of dust on the sensor that can be cleaned, otherwise I need to fork out for a new body, probably time for that anyway as it is an aging D70.

[–]btlyger 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Why is day time a still frame and night time a time lapse?

[–]azuretek 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's not time lapse, they're just different lengths of exposure. Night time shots usually require a longer exposure to get any kind of detail. It wouldn't have been possible to get the shot without the trailing lights, but it looks cool so it's not a big deal.

[–]blonked 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That's awesome, I love this sort of stuff. This is actually one of my favorite wallpapers.

[–]couper 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This is cool too. But it would have been nicer if they shot it from the other side so you get TD Court and the other skyscrapers, not just FCP. Or maybe even from St Lawrence market side and upwards.

Does NYC really have such a high ratio of taxi traffic?

[–]MKQ 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Not everywhere, but yes, it's not unheard of to see a great number in a row. I looked for a flatiron district web cam and couldn't find one, but here's a Times Square Cam -- if you watch it for a couple of minutes you'll see groups of taxis go by. Especially right now (7:30 pm) as all the Broadway shows are going to start shortly.

[–]Truest 0 points1 point ago

This man is a genius with the camera. He perfected his skills with film.

BTW, Forrest Myers, a SOHO artist from the 1960's, devised an idea for streams of light to be shot into the sky to mimic the WTC buildings as they were being built.

[–]MKQ 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Do you know if they will still have the lights even when everything is finished being built? It's only once a year, but I find myself going out and looking for the lights every year and hope they continue to do it.

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

[–]MKQ 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The lights are only there once a year on September 11th. It's funny but when standing in certain parts of the city, like this location, I will STILL sometimes look up expecting to use the Tower(s) to get my North/South bearings.

[–]epic_win 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Oh I haven't been in New York City at night so I've never seen those before. I love the tribute, but I think they should just rebuild them.

[–]MKQ 0 points1 point ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

My hope is that they will continue to do the tribute even as the site is finished.

As for just rebuilding, a ton of progress has been made and in fact 1 WTC is starting to tower over the skyline.

This is an interesting multi-media presentation of the complex taking shape.

Here is a view from 1 WTC of the Memorial Fountains, which are in the footprint of the old towers as well as the plan for the rest of the stuff being built/planned. It's pretty massive. The new 7 WTC is over 50 stories at this point, the fountains have been tested, trees have been planted. 5 WTC is being worked on, the museum is well underway and a new trains stations are underway.
