Somehow I doubt the dolphin was riding the whale.

Looks more like the whale decided to headbutt that loser dolphin straight out of the water.

I feel like the dolphin wanted to jump out extra high and decided to ramp off the whale as it was coming out of the water.

Hmm. To me, it looks like the whale is wearing a dolphin hat. I know I would.

not just any whale. It's a humpback whale.

Is this the aquatic animal equivalent to drowning?

Ugh, even though whales and dolphins are cousins, whales have been known to eat dolphins (killer whales). Sooo...there is a chance that this whale came up under the dolphin, headbutted it to toss it in the air and knock it out, just to kill and eat it.

Fun fact - killer whales aren't whales at all. They are actually the largest type of the several types of dolphins.

The only truly carnivorous whale that I can recall is the Sperm whale, which the one in the picture isn't.

Well, I'm definitely no whale biologist (nor any kind of biologist, for that matter), but a quick look through the Wiki entry only seems to show a relationship at a pretty high spot in the tree.

To my mind, their appearance and habits make them far more dolphin-like than whale-like, but I'll willingly concede that there's room for argument either way.

[–]chocolatepanties 1 point2 points ago

I thought that the killer whale belongs in the oceanic dolphin family (which includes whales and dolphins) but are also considered whales, included in the group of whales with teeth.

I've never seen that distinction. AFAIK they have always been called the largest of the dolphins and considered distinct from whales.

That whale was clearly a humpback or similar whale which is a filter feeder and would not be able to eat a dolphin. As someone has already said, Sperm Whales are the only truly carnivorous whales still alive.

Nah, don't worry, that's not a killer whale, it's not even carnivorous. In fact, it would be physically unable to eat the dolphin even if it wanted to. Nothing here but two sea mammals having some fun :-D
