We've got more access to non-renewable resources per capita than anyone is likely to have this millennium. Especially those younger than 30 who might get both fusion-powered unlimited electricity and non-renewable resources. Perhaps we might even be the first to live over 100. Sure we might have the least opportunity to explore, but we've got the most wealth.

Before feeling like crap because of this people should ask themselves those questions.

How many countries have you visited ?

How many oceans have you sailed upon ?

How many mountains have you climbed ?

[–]whorecrux 8 points9 points ago

Well, I hear that the ocean is still free for deeper exploration.

[–]skifrk29 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Hell, 99.9999% of the Planet Earth is still up for exploration. We've only explored the surface and an infinitesimal amount of the interior.

[–]el_leprechauno 1 point2 points ago

And Don't forget how unknown the jungle is.

[–]skifrk29 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Absolutely, I mean, we just discovered a whole new civilization of humans not too many years ago, and there are miles and miles that are still unexplored.

[–]el_leprechauno 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I remember those people, what happened to them after they were found?

[–]skifrk29 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well there was the whole thing where the explorers got trapped in the village, and the villagers were cannibals, so naturally there was concern. They eventually got them out unharmed, and the government decided no one was allowed to interfere with the village. Some dude talked about it on the colbert report recently.

[–]el_leprechauno 2 points3 points ago

This is complete crap. This is the perfect time for scientific exploration. Our technological developments in spectroscopy and oter analytical meters, along with new research showing entire fields that could dramatically change the way we view life (epigenetics, advances in immunology, etc), make this time the perfect time to live. Go discover something!

[–]paksman 13 points14 points ago

But I'm at the age of Reddit, I explore everthing - on office hours

[–]somethingthathurts 2 points3 points ago

but you were born at just the right time to explore the underwater stretch of the oceans. Worth something, amiright?

[–]JimmyDThing 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If you take this attitude, I have 0 sympathy for you. You're not only missing everything going on around you, you are missing the entire point.

Find yourself a frontier to explore and do so. The unknown doesn't find you, you have to go looking for it. If you're too lazy to do so, then you obviously don't REALLY want to be part of any of it. You would have been sitting around as people explored the new world moaning about how all great literature had already been written and there's nothing left to write about, or that air travel could not possibly happen in your lifetime.

If you want to be part of the exploration of space, THEN DO IT.

[–]Alexwearshats 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

To space!

...I'm gonna be an astronaut now, dammit.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Isn't it much much easier for the common person to explore earth these days?

[–]TheRedComet 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If you think about it though, how many people back in the day were explorers? How many people become astronauts? even if you were born in the right time, it's unlikely these are things you would actually be doing. Just be glad we have awesome things like technology and the internet, and relatively less turmoil and disease than in the past.

[–]safety3rd 1 point2 points ago

At no other time in history could you find an affordable and seaworthy sailboat with adequate and simple electronics to allow you to sail around the world desalinating your own seawater taking vitamin supplements and eating out of cans. Price of this adventure under 20k. I assure you this is hardcore enough, You don't need scurvy to have a good time. Everything's been explored you say? Tell that to the Native Americans there whiteboy.

Born too late to die in the plague, born too early to die in the space plague.

[–]Atreides_Zero 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The depths of the oceans are relatively unexplored.

The internet is a vast and constantly changing entity just waiting for us to explore and discover it's secrets.

We may not get to explore space but we may see bases established on the moon, titan, or mars within our lifetimes, it is never to late to begin making your self a potential asset for these ventures.

The private space flight industry is just starting to take off, we may see it take off to new heights within our lifetimes.

We just barely understand the human mind, but are already trying to recreate it through software, both are fields ripe for exploration.

Checkout groups like Paleo-World and go help explore the extinct species of our planet, maybe even discover new species or facts about those we already know.

To limit ourselves to space and geography is the only true dissapointment.

Miniver Cheevy

Miniver Cheevy, child of scorn, Grew lean while he assailed the seasons; He wept that he was ever born, And he had reasons.

Miniver loved the days of old When swords were bright and steeds were prancing; The vision of a warrior bold Would set him dancing.

Miniver sighed for what was not, And dreamed, and rested from his labors; He dreamed of Thebes and Camelot, And Priam's neighbors.

Minever mourned the ripe renown That made so many a name so fragrant; He mourned Romance, now on the town, And Art, a vagrant.

Minever loved the Medici, Albeit he had never seen one; He would have sinned incessantly Could he have been one.

Miniver cursed the commonplace And eyed a khaki suit with loathing; He missed the mediæval grace Of iron clothing.

Miniver scorned the gold he sought, But sore annoyed was he without it; Miniver thought, and thought, and thought, And thought about it.

Miniver Cheevy, born too late, Scratched his head and kept on thinking; Miniver coughed, and called it fate, And kept on drinking.

I think the same thing very often. It could even be simplified to I'm too lazy to do an exciting shitty job like fishing in Alaska or I don't have the ballls to fight in a war. The will to live always wins out in the battle between the will to live and the will to find adventure. That is to say I suppose I would've been some sort of scribe in the past and could've been a space scribe in the future.

[–]jazzwhiz 0 points1 point ago

think about how many people actually got to "explore" the world. very few every generation or so.

now we get to fly across the entire world in a day without added huge risk of never making it home.

Oh outer space exploration will come in our lifetime (significantly extended lifetime), give the nerds + technology a couple decades before you can hop into your remote control iSpace and shoot around the galaxy on your own terms.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

if it makes you feel any better, humanity will probably wipe itself out before it can explore the galaxy.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

Yeah I mean, besides modern medicine, the internet, satellite communications, modern housing, air conditioning, roads, automobiles, the ability to travel around the entire world on a plane for a few thousand bucks in 2 days, a trip that previously took years, parliamentary democracy, untold wealth and prosperity that has never before been seen in human history, the acceptance of gays, the acceptance of atheists, helicopters, the ability to buy a burrito at 3am... you're right.

Feels bad man.

Actually I think my generation may get to explore the galaxy when we're 70ish. OP, how old are you? I'm late teens.

If nothing else, I'd bet on moon colonization and maybe Mars too. Even traveling between planets right next to each other would be really cool. Have you seen the plasma rocket that the Central American guy designed for NASA? Holy shit. That could be a game changer. Look it up if you don't know what I'm talking about.

You've been born in the best time of history human so far.

Just read how much we, as humans have come since 1900's, compared to any other centuries before it.

Hell, look at the progress we have made.. it took us 60 years to go from basic flight, to flying to the fucking moon and back, and also walking about on it. We as humans, since the start of the latter half of the 20th century just started to understand how we work as people.. and now we know how to modify/treat and cure most diseases as well as modify other organisms to do our bidding? how cool is that?!

We can fly from one continent to another in less than a day. We can transmit information and our pictures/videos to people thousands of miles away in the blink of an eye..

We have not been born too late or too early, we've been born in what is coming up to the new golden ages of human society.

That's what makes me so sad about current human space exploration.

It just makes me so, so, so jealous. It's so bad, that I'd rather have space exploration stop than me not being a part of it. Have you ever wanted something so unattainable in your life?
