At rehearsal for drum corps in Texas it was 135 degrees on the field (turf of course...so the little black turf turds heated up like hell), and we still had 2 hours of rehearsal left...Texas summers are rediculous. The glue on my soles of my shoes melted too and they started to fall apart haha

[–]Razakel 45 points46 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

"No service" doesn't mean "no signal".

Phone networks are obligated to allow emergency calls from any handset, regardless of carrier or even the presence of a SIM.

[–]ckelley87 13 points14 points ago

It shuts off the antenna to keep the temp down, but if you need to use the phone for emergency service, it turns it back on regardless of how hot the internal temperature is.

[–]ChubDawg420 34 points35 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

no, it shuts off the cellular radio. antennas are passive.

[–]celesfar 0 points1 point ago

[–]sirbruce 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Actually I read that it's an actual thermocouple next to the battery so it's not even sending a temperature, just a signal when it gets too hot.

[–]mgrandi 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

my phone does this too, and its a shitty 'free' verizon phone from LG. I left it in my car one day during the middle of a summer day in arizona, and my phone was off. I turned it on and it said that it had powered off because the battery got too hot.

i find it amusing that every single person posting this thing that happened to their personal iphones managed to take the screenshot then the slider is in spanish (the Slide to SOS message will rotate through every language) and when every letter is grey. I can't believe someone actually settled in Texas originally. "Hmm, what a great place to settle! I'm glad the land here is free! Oh, the first summer. What the fuck is this? You sweat, it does not evaporate, you get hotter, sweat some more -- repeat until you stroke out.

The humidity in Houston was only 86% today at 100 degrees. It felt wonderful compared to the last couple of weeks.

Do lithium batteries obey the laws of thermodynamics?

[–]Razakel 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Also, do lithium batteries heat up while discharging? I'm not sure.

I think thermodynamics can answer that one.

I left mine in the car in a mount that put it in direct sunlight for four hours. Went back in to work after lunch and forgot all about it until I got in the car to leave. I was amazed it hadn't melted or just shut itself completely off, and this was when it was 107 or so outside, so lord only knows how hot it was inside the car and internally.

[–]jb_ 0 points1 point ago

Doing this ruins the battery. Li ion batteries permanently lose capacity quite quickly when subjected to high temperatures.

Heh, mine too.

Driving in rush hour traffic at 4:00 on I-45 is awesome. Only one with the windows rolled down.

I have lost about five pounds in the last couple weeks, though.

My AC is broken and my windows don't go down and as if to piss me off even more my damper is broken and I can't change which vents my air comes out of. It comes out of all of them. It sucks. I live in PA so its been getting cooler now but it hit 108 for a few days about a month ago.

I love the Texas heat now that I'm somewhat acclimated. Luckily, I only ever spend a week or so at a time in it.

Granted, part of that could be from having used up the battery, especially if it discharged in a short amount of time.

Avoid leaving your iphone exposed to any sun. I had that happen as well and it was just a sunny 75 degrees. My ipad seemed to handle it a bit better though.

I would blame the phone manufacturer and not the more or less predictable and modellable conditions in which it's supposed to be used on a daily basis.

[–]ChubDawg420 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Coping with extreme thermal environments is very difficult. Most consumer electronics can't handle extreme temperatures without some degradation in performance. Making a smartphone with limited opportunities for heat dissipation function continuously in >100° environments is nearly impossible.
