There is a browser named Maxthon, not sure if you heard of it. It's pretty popular among a group of Chinese users. The Chinese pronunciation of Maxthon sounds just like toilet.

All other factors equal, there are shittier browsers. However, the problem with earlier versions of IE is that they are ubiquitous and shitty at the same time. I don't have to re-code hours of work just to make things look right in Netscape.

Lynx for the win:

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/e/ed/Lynx_%28web_browser%29.png We had that (or something very similar to it) in our public library. Even still, the internet -PCs were always booked full and it took even a day or two to get 30 minutes of that precious interwebs-time. I used most of it on printing out cheat codes on SNES-games, or for school work. Sucked ass, and it was slow as molasses (not only because the connection was slow, but because the computers took 3 minutes rendering the text on screen, from top to bottom). On thing was great about it though - no fucking dancing baby .gifs!

Oh god... now I remember how much I miss BBSes :( They were even more kickass than the web while it was still young. A techno-geeks heaven. Shareware-games, MUDs, random FAQs in .txt -format like how to cheat on video poker, chat, discussion forums etc... What I would give to experience that one more time: sitting in a dark room with an 286 IBM PC with a huge harddrive (10-20 megabytes! gasp), chatting with my best buddies about school and girls, with that bright green text on a black background really messing up your eyes but feeling like a totally badass cyberpunk/hacker xD Then your parents forcing you to shut it down, waiting for them to go to bed, covering your modem with a thick planket (sshhzzzxhhh, bzz-bzz-bzzzz, dingdong-dingdong-ding-zeeeeeeeck) and continuing.

As a web developer, for me those IE conditional tags are a life / sanity saver. It seems Microsoft knew the browser was shit even back when they first started developing it.

[–]Tblue 76 points77 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Nonono, you got that wrong! According to Microsoft, conditional comments are there to

make it easy for developers to take advantage of the enhanced features offered by Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 and later versions, while writing pages that downgrade gracefully in less-capable browsers or display correctly in browsers other than Internet Explorer.

As a fellow web developer, note that IE Conditional Comments has been abandoned by Microsoft in favour of Feature Detection from IE9 going forward.

Consider using tools like Modernizr.

[–]The_MAZZTer 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The problem with feature detection is that IE tends to implement features just differently enough from everyone else to cause problems.

Thankfully IE9 actually scores decently on acid3 now, indicating that this problem may be ending.

May I suggest using a reset stylesheet? It makes sure all elements on the page have the same universal CSS styling before you style them yourself, eliminating a lot of problems like this.

What's the last one? And what is the example conditional tags webby_mc_webberson is talking about?

[–]taka06 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They're a set of 'tags' that IE knows how to interpret, but no other browser does. They support version #'s as well. Among other things you can use them to embed IE specific styles for a page.

IE9 is much more compliant to W3C standards than any other IE. It is still, however, terribly slow compared to the other big browsers and it doesn't have very good plugin support or development tools.

[–]KerrickLong 52 points53 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I've actually found it to be faster than Firefox and on par with Safari. It's still slower than Opera and Chrome.

But yeah, the plugin support isn't as good (though at least it measures their speeds and asks you to disable slow ones), and its development tools for JS are shit, and the ones for HTML/CSS inspection and experimenting aren't very good.

[–]steve_b 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Everyone always talks about one browser being slower or faster than other, but I've never noticed that this. I switch back & forth between Firefox & Chrome during the day, and occasionally use IE, and I can't really tell the difference between them. Is this one of those things where "faster" means "loads cnn.com in 3.15 seconds instead of 3.25 seconds", or because it runs some artificial benchmark 50% faster than its competitors?

Net performance seems like such an overwhelming factor when determining the performance of your browsing experience - how does browser speed factor in?

[–]alanzeino 5 points6 points ago

I can't afford a Mac so I'll have to take your word for it, but it makes sense. Safari is Webkit originally developed for OS X, Chrome is Webkit originally developed for Windows.

[–]YesShitSherlock 35 points36 points ago

The first thing I did with my work computer was try to install Firefox and get a pop-up telling me I needed admin privileges to install applications. The second thing I did was put my thumbdrive with a portable version of Firefox in the USB slot.

Why did you try to download if you had it on your flashdrive in the first place?

[–]C_IsForCookie 3 points4 points ago

It's inconvenient to have to put a flash drive into the computer every day if it's something you take home with you. It's also slower.

Quite confused, none of these images look like a web browser. Here is what I see:

1: Wild animal, possibly infected with rabies.

2: Heavy metal, toxic.

3: "The fine arts", expensive, "upper-class", makes little sense to most people.

4: Travel to exotic country, expensive, a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

5: Something most people use every single day.

[–]Antrikshy 57 points58 points ago

You use a toilet covered with shit everyday? You must be one lazy dude.

[–]Jottor 2 points3 points ago

No, but if I had to take a dump, I could wipe it down in seconds, and do my business. It might not be pleasant, but it would get the job done.

You don't need to travel to exotic countries to go on a Safari. I live in the UK, and for some reason you get Safari Parks in the middle of the UK with Lions..

For the techie people you could add a few more browsers, but that was awesome. If only I could fit those images into icons.

I wonder what a really old browser would do with modern web pages. Time to experiment!

The only reason stuff runs fine on IE and the others is because developers effectively build 2 websites: one "real", and one "IE specific hacky mess" version.

[–]mikeliketrike 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I really don't understand all the current day IE hate. I understand IE 6 issues, I really do. It just needs to be kept in the past and not supported anymore.

If you're comparing apples to apples, IE 9 is comparable in many ways to the latest Firefox or Chrome release.

I interchange between chrome, firefox, and IE, depending on which icon was closest to my mouse when i wanted to open a browser. Each one loads the same damn website exactly the same. I don't need much from a browser, 99.999 percent of the time. they are all almost identical from a functionality standpoint, except friggin firefox constantly won't load because it always wants to update like it was Adobe software or Java. Other than that annoyance, i really do not care.

[–]miran1 22 points23 points ago

Each one loads the same damn website exactly the same.

Some of us work for days to make this happen.

[–]The_MAZZTer 28 points29 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

As a web developer, I can confirm that I can code for days using just Chrome as my testbed, then open the final site in Firefox and chances are 99% of it will look the same and just work, requiring only a little tweaking.

Then I open it in IE and cry, realizing I should have incrementally tested in IE from the start.

[–]SHFT 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I've been doing a lot of "html5" work lately, and there are just some features that IE refuses to support (half of the css3 standard, native canvas up until ie9, a very rigid easy to break javascript standard) and as such we've been forwarding ie customers to a page that gives them our system requirements, one of those requirements being a compatible browser (basically any of the other ones.) and a link to Firefox, Chrome, and Opera download pages. We've saved thousands of dollars in development by doing so, and hope to rid the world of that shit covered toilet that is Internet Explorer.

[–]The_MAZZTer 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Half of CSS3? Man you're lucky, I still have to watch out what elements of CSS2 I use! :) Just the other day I used display: inline-block by accident and I had to rework it with display: block and float: left and some other tweaks.

[–]SHFT 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I was being generous in saying half. What Microsoft really ought to do is adopt webkit into IE, and hope that they don't bastardize it. (ah who am I kidding, of course they'll find a way to screw that up).

[–]B_Flat 14 points15 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Seconded. Seems it's just popular to hate on IE.

On the other hand, I'm still pretty burned from web development at Uni and having to deal with various versions of IE.

[–]TheMeerkat 5 points6 points ago

  1. I can't imagine you spend a lot of time on the internet... either that, or you've never even tried customizing your browser and realizing how much more convenient it can be.

  2. I have never understood this complaint about Firefox. Firefox pops up a notification next time you open it saying it downloaded a new version, hit Install, wait fifteen seconds, continue using Firefox. What's hard about this?

[–]brainflakes 4 points5 points ago
