It's pretty obvious supernatural intervention was involved in the sauropod-mammoth transition.

It's called "EVOLUTION OF MEN" by blu. Here's the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ePDkUVH3MXQ and his youtube channel: http://www.youtube.com/notblu

It's cool if you read it as less as an accurate portrayal of evolution and more as a statement about what warfare makes us.

what warfare makes us?

murder and warfare is in alignment with evolution

without such moral horrors, even though these ethical concepts are not universally true and have been evolved into us for social group living, we would not be who we are today

murder and the idea that murder is wrong.. this is our evolution

That is the most amazing artwork I have ever seen. And it has to be by the same guy as the topic picture, because the warfare scenes have some of the exact same people in them.

Thinking about the amount of thought and work that had to go into creating something like that is absolutely mind-blowing.

This is more than wrong in "many places." It's completely wrong as any form of representation of evolution.

However, as art, it is pretty cool.

Evolution is taught across many disciplines of science. Archaeology shouldn't be singled out.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I disagree. The point wasn't to say that each creature led directly to the next creature. Rather it was trying to pick out the most "evolved" creature from each time period. More like passing the crown than passing genes.

[–][deleted] 23 points24 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

There's no such thing as 'most evolved'

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Could it be correct as a representation of evolution in another timeline?

[–]drc500free 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Not really. Evolution doesn't happen in a straight line or with a direction (other than "forwards in time"). It never jumps, it only makes one incremental step at at time - everything is transitional.

Organisms just have some way of passing on their traits to similar copies of themselves, and some way of remixing their genes with their relatives to stay fairly similar. Genes that help the host survive and make more copies get passed on, those that don't... don't. Every so often, something makes a population split in two, and the two halves can't swap genes for a while. When they meet each other again, they don't swap genes anymore. Once that happens, you really can't include them in the same family line.

"Survival of the Fittest" is the famous quote, but it's really more like "Reproduction of the Survivors."

[–]ThereAreDozensOfUs -2 points-1 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Evolution does indeed jump. There are holes in the correct fossil record. Pre-Cambrian explosion comes to mind. Now, these holes might be due to the fact that these fossils were destroyed or have simply not been discovered, but to say that Evolution never jumps is indeed false

[–]drc500free 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm trying to understand what you're saying here, but I'm really not getting it. We first understood gravity by looking at planets through telescopes, and we understand evolution partially by examining fossils. If you dropped your telescope, it wouldn't make gravity suddenly disappear - telescopes have nothing to do with gravity, and fossils have nothing to do with evolution.

The "pre-Cambrian explosion" is widely considered a myth at this point. As Dawkins put it - It is as though a gardener looked at an old oak tree and remarked, wonderingly: "Isn’t it strange that no major new boughs have appeared on this tree for many years. These days, all the new growth appears to be at the twig level !"

[–]ThereAreDozensOfUs -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

just simply saying that the fossil record isn't consistent, and does in fact have holes in it (these aren't critical holes by any means)

Fossils are integral to Evolution. How can you even make that assertion that fossils have nothing to do with Evolution. Without fossils, how do you an analyze the bone structure of extinct animal? Without fossils, you can't trace the progression of dinosaurs and their strong resemblance to today's birds

[–]drc500free 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Right, but those are not gaps in evolution. You're sort of mixing the study of evolution with evolution itself. If you hand me a picture of a crime scene I wouldn't say that picture was integral to the crime, or that the crime "jumped" because there isn't a video of it. "Evolution Jumps" sounds like organisms make major changes without intermediate steps, which I don't think is what you were trying to say.

Fossils are definitely useful for understanding extinct organisms, and they let us see how an incredibly small number of organisms from the past actually looked, which is amazing. As you said, it's very enlightening to compare them to modern body structures to try to interpolate how they fit in with our own ancestors, plus they help us calibrate between geology and evolution.

But still, saying there's "holes in the fossil record" is like finding 43 grains of sand in a meadow and saying "there's holes in the beach." Fossils are an incredibly rare exception to how things usually die, and you wouldn't expect them to form a coherent record of anything at all. If there weren't any fossils, we would be able to figure things out just fine for the evolution of currently living species. We can pull billions of times more information from living DNA than from dead fossils, and phylogenetic trees give us a more detailed view of where species split up - and if you need more data, you can just pull more DNA.

[–]ThereAreDozensOfUs 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Really not quite sure why we are arguing anymore. There isn't a fundamental disagreement present.

[–]drc500free 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well, glad we collapsed it down to terminology instead of expectations. Most science debates here are equivalent to "Thumbs are fingers!/No they aren't!" and dissolve once you Taboo the words you were arguing about.

What are you talking about!? We didn't evolve from the Wooly Mammoth?

[–]arbuthnot-lane 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I remember reading about a Russian project trying to get a hold of semi-viable mammoth sperm preserved in the permafrost.
Or secodnly, just some form of preserved DNA, which could then be modified into elephant eggs. Via selective (in)breeding over several generations they hoped to end up with something very much like a woolly mammoth.
No idea if the project is still receiving any funds, or if it just died in devo hell.

[–]FASTFORCE 8 points9 points ago

To me, it doesn't look like one "timeline", rather two. From the left to where the guy is getting shot and dies. And from the right to the same point.

If you look at any of other Blu's stuff, you'd find that it's all on the surreal side. It is not that he doesn't understand evolution or that he was trying to reproduce it, but he was using the idea as a grounding element for a fictional piece. A piece which I find to be a very creative a brilliant use of public space.

My first thoughts were "oh cool, evolut-wait a second, that is completely wrong."

But then I notice if you look from the absolute right of the picture and move it left towards the pile of bones in the middle-ish, the art is decently accurate of Homo sapiens's evolution. It showed the reptile-to-rodent evolution, and then the rodent to the "monkey" then to humans.

To everyone complaining it is an inaccurate portrayal of evolution and therefore bad or dangerous because it will give someone the wrong idea. IF YOU GET YOUR INFORMATION OF ANY COMPLICATED IDEA FROM A FUCKING DRAWING YOUR DOING IT WRONG. This is a cool drawing and was a neat idea. Never watch Star Wars again because the ships make noise in the vacuum of space and it isn't a realistic portrayal of intergalactic civil war. TL/DR your a arse if you don't like this because it is an inaccurate portrayal of evolution.

Creationist! That man on the bench is obviously Jehovah and those Mexicans in the early Triassic are obviously an attempt to state that man lived during the time of Dinosaurs. Not in MY Texas curriculum you don't!

That picture kind of makes it look like the animal kingdom is going to wink out of existence in the not-too-distant future.

TO ALL THE HATERS: You do realise you guys are sounding an awful lot like bigots huh. It's not meant to be scientific, but its the scientific evolution as inspiration, which is to have many small changes over time resulting in something completely different from the beginning.

and on a side note, it's not the world's fault the US has so many stupid creationists/fundie christians picketing. Try being nice for a change you science nazis, might win more people over than whatever the fuck you're doing now.

I believe a lot of "haters" are having a problem because this depiction of evolution is totally incorrect. These days, with the crazy creationists who are ALREADY against evolution, we don't need more false ideas of evolution being perpetuated. That's why people are bustin' a nut. They aren't saying it's not well done art or anything.

That being said, it is definitely a beautiful piece of artwork, and being incorrect doesn't take away from that. I'm just worried about those lunatic fundamentalists seeing it and taking it the wrong way.

I don't think you know what a bigot is and I don't think you're smart enough to be criticizing other people.

"A bigot is a person obstinately or intolerantly devoted to his or her own opinions and prejudices, especially one exhibiting intolerance, and animosity toward those of differing beliefs."

A number of you guys are going "omg this art shouldn't exist 11!!!" and saying "they should stay out of science". Everyone is entitled to their opinions, being a dick about your opinions vs others kinda makes you a bigot. Like say for example, repeatedly telling people their wrong makes you sound like a certain breed of religious crazy.

You might argue science isn't quite as vague as voice-in-my-head which is true but this isn't a diagram for a science textbook, it isn't factual. It isn't meant to be. it's an art piece based on someone's imagination of what evolution could be. Art has always taken inspiration from other sources ad re-intepretated in a new way. This really isn't very different from colbert's satire and the republicans in Iowa really aren't laughing at that superpac.

Tldr: respect artistic license kthx. Don't be a dick about your opinions.

On another sidenote, blublu is an artist collective based mainly in areas not the US. At least the stupid people in those parts aren't running for president.

This might be the most childish reddit comment I've ever read.
