It's the same reason parents want "nigger" out of Huck Finn textbooks. Anything to have one less conversation with my fucking child.

I think that it's funny that he thinks Tom Sawyer is a better person than Huck Finn. Huck Finn was willing to be damned to save a friend, in defiance of all social conventions, and Tow Sawyer wanted to mess with the slave that he knew was freed just to make it more exciting.

And Tom faked his own death just to mess with everyone else, whereas Huck only faked his own death to escape from a life of nightmarish child abuse.

[–]ravenouscraving 16 points17 points ago

The great thing about this is everyone thought Huck was such a bad kid because everyone said so. Tom was a real jerk. Huck had a set of morals and values that were far ahead of his time, and he was demonized for it.

[–]edstatue 15 points16 points ago

And even at the end of Huck Finn, after it should be revealed to Huck and Jim that Jim is free, Tom fucks with them and makes them hide in a shed for dear life. He's a complete dick, really.

I remember that conversation with my older son. When he was 9 or so, I was reading Huck Finn to him. We read several pages each night before going to sleep. The first time I came across the word "nigger" I read it out loud. Then stopped reading because it was strange and uncomfortable to hear myself say the word.

I said something like, "A long time ago, when this book was written, it was common to use the word 'nigger' to refer to black people. But now, it's hurtful and makes people angry. There's really no reason to ever use that word."

So, for the rest of the time we were reading the book, whenever I would come upon the word "nigger" I would skip it. I didn't say anything in its place--it was more like a _________.

It's hard to know (13 years later) if that conversation did him any good. He is still a hard headed smart ass. But he's not a racist.

EDIT: weird formatting issues with my punctuation

We live in Mississippi, btw, where it's still common to hear people use the word (blank) in every day conversation. And not in a hip-hop kind of way. More like, "Did you see those (blank)s standing in front of the Stop & Go? You could hear their music three blocks away."

[–]mythmaster 12 points13 points ago

We read parts of Huckleberry Finn aloud in English class and no one censored the word nigger.

If it's part of the text, it's part of the text. It's as simple as that.

C.K. has a stand-up bit about this. He hates people that call nigger 'The N Word.' It's just a word, say the fucking word, otherwise explain its goddamn context in history if that's what you're doing, and if not, don't fucking use it.

The difference I think is that his personal feelings "Just say nigger you stupid faggot cunt" take a backseat to raising his daughters. He sort of explains it in one of the episodes of Louie in season 2.

He meets his old great aunt and she keeps calling a bowl of nuts "Niggertoes" and says there are too many damn niggers in the city to raise his daughters there.

The girls ask him why she says those words, and at first he tells them to ignore it, then he caves and says you can ask her why yourselves. You have to watch it to see what happens. Louie CK is my favorite comedian from this era.

I don't think you exactly should be so afraid of the word nigger though. For example, I have no problem using the word nigger(and no, I'm not racist). People act as if they'll get taken away by the morality police if they say it.

However, with that being said, there is literally almost never any imaginable situation in which you SHOULD be using the word nigger(especially because it's easily replaced by "black"), unless, for example, you're explaining it to your son or something.

And yes, I know I might sound like I'm a racist, but drawing that entirely from the fact that I use the word nigger is pretty stupid.

[–]Kazyole 89 points90 points ago

There's an easily imaginable situation: any discussion revolving around the word itself. You would think that would be a rare thing, but it comes up so often it's not all that uncommon to talk about the word nigger. And that conversation is fucking stupid if people can't actually say the fucking word.

[–]Kazyole 18 points19 points ago

I would hardly qualify that as real usage of the word.

That's like when you have a vocabulary test in 5th grade and for the usage section you write something like "Onomatopoeia is a difficult word to spell."

Big points for making me remember doing this. My teacher would always give me half credit for this, so I continued to do it if I didn't know the definition of the word.

Once for homework we had to write a sentence with all of our vocabulary words. I took it to the next level, and used all 20 words in a "For homework tonight we have to use blank, blank, blank, and blank all in a sentence." I just played stupid and acted like I didn't know I couldn't do that, and the teacher still gave me a 100.

On the one hand, I completely understand his point - since everyone knows what word you mean, censoring yourself doesn't really do anything. On the other hand, I feel like if someone's uncomfortable actually saying the word, then just let them use the euphamism. Maybe they'll look kind of silly, but they'll feel better, and you'll still know what they're talking about. Besides, some people are also uncomfortable hearing the word, and sometimes it's better to not upset them. People who are uncomfortable just thinking the word will be upset either way, and if someone can't even come to terms with their own thoughts being offensive then they've got some issues they need to sort out that aren't your problem anyway.

What he was saying was that he has no problem using it, but there's no practical reason to ever use it. If he does use it in some sense (explaining to a kid for example), it doesn't make him a racist just for saying it. It's the intention, not the use, that makes it racist.

I loved Louis C.K.'s take on using the word. Paraphrasing he said

'When you say the n-word instead of just saying nigger, yes you're not saying it but then I have to hear it and translate in my head. I have to think, n-word? Oh right nigger. When you skip over it or replace it with n-word you don't not say it you just make me say it instead'

[–]pawnzz 20 points21 points ago

the word nigger(especially because it's easily replaced by "black")

Wait... what? Those two words mean very different things. "nigger" != "black". Nigger is its own word, we don't need to keep explaining it and qualifying what it is or isn't. It's a hateful, pejorative term and that's it. It's very simple. I don't see why people are still hemming and hawing about when it's OK, or when it's not OK to use it or if it would be better to use another word instead.

Here's the thing, if you have racist feelings towards people who have skin that's darker than yours (for whatever reason) and you say something other than "nigger" when talking about them, guess what? You're still a fucking racist. One word does not a racist make, it's the person saying the word, not the word that makes the racist.

Undercovermother's child isn't a racist because they were probably brought up in a decent home and taught not to hate people. It has absolutely NOTHING with whether or not they heard a word from some book that was written 100 years ago. When Undercovermother was reading Huck Finn the only person who was uncomfortable with hearing the word "nigger" was her, not her kid.

When we overreact to a word and act as if the word is something special, we give it power. Why do you think Voldemort wanted no one to say his name? Because if everyone is afraid to say his name then when they finally do hear it they freak out. But if you say He-Who-Should-Not-Be-Named then I know who you're fucking talking about. That information still gets across. But we're giving him power by doing so. It's the same with nigger and saying "the n-word". It's like Lenny Bruce said, if the president would just come out on CNN and say "Hello, I'd like to introduce you to the niggers form my cabinet, they're doing a lot of good work right now trying to fix this economy. I think the niggers in the house and the senate really need to get to work because we've got some changes we want implimented..." and if you said nigger and I said nigger and we all just kept saying it until it lost all meaning. Then it wouldn't be so damn hurtful.

But when the NAACP wants to "bury" the word and they want to make a big deal out of it every time someone says it then it's going to continue to be a powerful word.

Here's the really fucked up thing about the word "nigger" is that there's two groups of people who feel OK saying it. Black people and racists. I dunno, seems like there's something wrong about that. Why don't we all just start using it?

Anyways, I gotta get my nigger-ass back to work. My boss is getting suspicious. I never type this much.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

One word does not a racist make, it's the person saying the word, not the word that makes the racist.

Yeah, that's my thoughts on it. If I'm racist simply because I use the word nigger... that's pretty stupid. Personally, I'm not racist(and I literally just don't understand why people are racist), and it's not like I suddenly am just because I use the word nigger.

I'm just saying, you shouldn't go around calling black people niggers, because you can call them black people(or black, but not african american) and it literally means the same thing.

From what I read, you agree with me, but I don't know if you're being sarcastic or not.

[–]BlueRose03 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I agree with all that you've said. But I think what Peterblue meant when he said that "nigger" can easily be replaced by "black" is that the one is a highly derogatory term used by ignorant people to describe something they fear, hate, resent, do not understand, whatever. Stop the ignorance, and you stop any need to use any such term except what the person or thing actually is. Just plain don't call a black person a nigger; call him a black person.

[–]pawnzz 1 point2 points ago

Here's my thing. I just had a long conversation with my girlfriend about this and here's what was said:

GF: Don't you think that trivializing the word just spits in the face of the slaves who were called that? ME: No. Here's the thing, by treating the word so seriously today it's like acknowledging that it ever had any legitimacy to begin with. There never was nor ever will be a black man that is any less than white man simply because of the color of his skin. And look, what did people like Charlie Chaplin and Mel Brooks do with Hitler? They made fun of him. They didn't take him seriously. It's only by trivializing these things that we can strip them of their power. Because the ARE ridiculous. It's idiotic to think that word should have so much power over so many people.

Anyways, I'm sick of it. I'm sick of words being such a big deal that we have to have these kinds of discussions. If tomorrow everyone on the planet forgot that the word nigger ever existed then we'd just come up with another because until we have some sort of consciousness revolution we're going to continue to deal with ignorant racist motherfuckers.

[–]BlueRose03 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I agree with your girlfriend there in a way. Whatever way that word is treated in the future does not change how it has been used in the past unless it is first acknowledged. And one man may not be better than another man, but the one with the power needs to be just as aware of that fact so the other does not get shit on. Do what you like with whatever circumstances you are given, but it still sucks to be shit on. Before you can laugh at it, you have to acknowledge that it has held power over people and that you are now going to take action against it. Ignoring it won't make it go away.

[–]Khalexus 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I agree with you, but maybe that's because I'm not American and the word 'nigger' doesn't have quite a dark (no pun intended) history in Australia. Sure it's still racist, and there's no real reason you should be using it in public, but I don't feel like saying it is racist if you're not using it with ill-intent. My friends and I all call each other niggers (we're all white), but I don't think any of us are actually racist, it's more just friendly jests.

I'm not afraid to use the word nigger and I don't feel uncomfortable with it - but I still don't think it's needed (or appropriate) to refer to blacks as niggers in a derogatory fashion.

[–]UnderCoverMother 11 points12 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm not afraid. And I don't assume your racist because you use the word. I mostly think people are racist when they say something like, "I'm not racist! I have black friends. I even go to their house!"

It's surprising how many conversations start off that way. LOL

I'm not afraid to use the word nigger. I decided for myself that I won't use it to describe a person or people. Not to their faces or behind their backs.

Before I started school, my siblings and cousins and I used to call each other nigger. It was something we would call each other in anger that we wouldn't get in trouble for saying. (Like "stupid" or "jerk") So my early experience with the word was that it wasn't a nice thing to call someone.

When I started going to school and riding the bus, I heard other people use it in the more common way. There were always clues in the context that it wasn't a kind word to use. I think the resentment that comes out of peoples' mouths at the same time as the word does makes me cringe every time I hear it.

I mostly think people are racist when they say something like, "I'm not racist! I have black friends. I even go to their house!"

I don't think these people are racist; I think that they're uncomfortable with people that they see as being different from what they're used to being around, and they're terrified that this will be noticed by others and construed as racism. Just my 2 cents.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's kinda like when you were younger and you told your friends, "I'm not a spy!" And they would say, " Well, only a real spy would say he/she is not a spy." If I try and justify that I am not racist, it makes me seem like I really AM a racist and that I just dont want to get caught by the other races. Moral of the story: If you are willing to be stereotypical or decide to make a joke of that sort, that doesn't make you racist, but justifying that you are not racist by saying said joke, makes you seem like more of a racist then if you had just kept quiet.

p.s. I just read over that, and it is kind of confusing, but try and read it out.

[–]flykilla 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

people who say folks who say things like, "I'm not racist! I have black friends. I even go to their house" are racists have never been around around real racism. So to feel high and mighty, they find simple people who don't know how to keep up with what the really bigot-ish folks (the real folks who label and judge the best!) have determined is the proper way to broach the situation and call them something that their paranoia is borderline making them be...

[–]AlternateKarmaSource 1 point2 points ago

Here's the thing about that "I'm not racist, I have black friends" thing. White people are really nervous and over-sensitive over race issues. Stuff that I say with my black friends that would never be an issue gets misconstrued by white people. Most people I hang out with, by a pretty large majority, are black, so when a white person goes "It's African-American, maaaan", it really annoys me. But, since I'm white(ish), and I'm just saying the same thing I would say among my black friends, if I say that I have a lot of black friends and I've actually spent a day or two in black communities I sound like a clueless dude trying to justify his racism because he has a black friend. So, the only thing I can really say is "Nah, that's not racist." This has only happened a few times but it's really annoying when it happens, because I'm not a racist and I don't like being called one.

I disagree with censorship that masks historical context, which is what LCK is talking about; you must be able to explain the dirty racist past in all of its brutal savagery in order to ensure that its lessons are learned in full.

That's a different thing from treating the word as acceptable in everyday parlance. There just isn't a right time to say nigger, save in remembrance. To me it's like a museum of slavery, or of torture, or of the holocaust - keep it there lest we forget what horrors humanity is capable of.

Extra: Some people value the reclamation of abuse terms, but having Indian heritage in the UK I personally experienced being called "paki" through most of my adolescence and the sheer inaccuracy as much as the racism. I wouldn't begrudge anyone else the right to try and change the meaning of terms of abuse but context is everything and the weight of prior vitriol means I can't really accept the redefinitions proposed.

[–]night4runner 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It is all about context, if you use it to hurt and offend-you probably shouldn't browse reddit and ask for sympathy.

If you use it to illustrate the position of slaves in the 19th Century, and point out that without the word being in the book the rescue of Jim at the end and the most important phrase in American literature (Huck Fin: Then I'll go to hell!) are greatly lessened, you are doing it right.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think that takes away from the book a bit. Mark Twain was pretty anti-racist if you look closely at the book. Like the argument over different languages that people speak between Jim and Huck. Jim was more logical, but only "lost" because he had no education. Jim was smarter.

I dunno, I don't advocate the usage of "nigger" or something, but it just seems integral to the book. It seems like a case study in morals clashing with culture.

[–]Han-ChewieSexyFanfic 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I have to say, as someone that isn't American and doesn't speak English natively, I'm really puzzled by the whole "nigger" thing. I know it's incredibly offensive, and it's a remarkably bad idea to use it to hurt someone, but I don't understand why people are afraid of it.

I mean, you gave your son this great explanation: short, simple, covered all the bases; but you felt "strange and uncomfortable" saying it like it's Voldemort's name. To an outside observer, it's a really curious phenomenon.

[–]sonar1 7 points8 points ago

So you explained the context of the word then refused to use it? that's the same shit texas education board wants to do by replacing it with negro. Treat the child like an adult, help him better understand the era, the definition of the word and read the book as it was meant to be read.

I'm from Mississippi and it's really not the only place like that. I lived in Virginia and that was common there too. Don't think for a minute that you're in the only backwards place. However, you're in one of the very rare places where you have to have a prescription for sudafed because they are really that bad at figuring out the Meth problem. So rest easy there.

P.S., the state is in sections, and going by area codes works fine. 228 is a more sane place, probably because it's built on tourism/casinos.

[–]GeorgeLiquor 3 points4 points ago

Gay marriage does not compare with the Huck Finn editing.

It's not like copies of Huck Finn with the word nigger are illegal.

So far it's only 1 edition of the book that has the edit and the guy who headed the change was "worried that the N-word had resulted in the novel falling off reading lists, and that the new edition would be welcomed by schoolteachers and university instructors who wanted to spare the reader from a racial slur that never seems to lose its vitriol."

Whatever underlying reason you may think there is, the point is that more people read the book. Even the controversy was a good thing because it gave the book more exposure.

It's not like anyone's complaining that musicians release "clean" versions of their albums, so why does it matter if some publisher wants to release a "clean" version of Huck Finn.

[–]PirateBuckley 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I am thoroughly offended at "clean" versions of albums. In the majority of the cases it's the record companies that do it because Walmart and places like that won't sell uncensored albums. (at least that's the case where I live.) I would hope the artist wouldn't enjoy making music just to have it chopped and fucked up by someone who has to "think of the children." Fuck the children and fuck justifying censorship.

I promised myself I would be honest on this alt, so here goes: I grew up in San Fran. I CANNOT believe it's taken this long to legalize gay marriages. I never dreamed it would take this long. WTF. People who love each other should receive the same benefits, and should they be deemed (yeah, no heterosexual couple has to meet that, lawl) capable of rearing children they deserve every right anyone else does in a union. Done.

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Comedy has always been a powerful tool. And sometimes, the truth that many people are afraid to see (or simply have trouble seeing) is fucking hilarious, on its own.

There were many Carlin bits where he'd be on stage, and he wasn't really telling a joke. He was just telling a 100% true story, and it's fucking hilarious. There's no punchline, but the fact that you've never considered XYZ social norm from a critical perspective before makes you realize just how ridiculous society can be over an issue that affects absolutely nobody.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

He's filling the position of truth-teller left unfilled by George Carlin, and Bill Hicks, and Lenny Bruce before him.

There's always been at least one comedian since Lenny Bruce carrying with this theme of comedy.

Carling picked it up and for a while we had Hicks and Carlin and it looked like Hicks would be taking over for Carlin after he eventually ended up on the big roof in the sky, but then Hicks lost to cancer, so when Carlin left us in the last half decade, we didn't really have anyone who really fit the bill like they did. Now that Louis C.K. is blowing up we do.

What I want to know (as an atheist, mind you), if they are so concerned about the sanctity of marriage, how come they're not fighting to stop atheists — gay OR straight — from getting married?

Answer: Sexual hangups. That's all it is.

[–]pittsburgh924 13 points14 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Also, why aren't they fighting against enemy #1 of marriage - divorce?

[–]marvelously 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

We don't like to address the real issues. Or any issue really. We like to create big dramatic scenes and pretend we will ALMOST take care of things by looking super busy and spending a ton of money, but really we just push things around to give it the impression something happened. But rarely do things happen.

[–]Kazyole 15 points16 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If you strictly follow the bible like the evangelicals who campaign against gay rights, divorce is just as condemned as homosexuality. What's interesting is that evangelical christians have the highest divorce rate amongst christian denominations at 34% — 13% more than the atheist population at 21%. I seem to remember a certain biblical teaching about "he who is without sin" and all the stone casting that modern fundamentalist christians do.

It's just a matter of cherry picking the parts of biblical law that don't inconvenience them. Adultery/Divorce aren't criminal offenses in the US because christians enjoy them too much.

The "sanctity of marriage" argument is equally ridiculous. Marriage as it existed in the bible was essentially a contract by which a man would sell his daughter to another man. Hell, in Deuteronomy, the penalty for raping a virgin is that you have to pay her father 50 shekels, and she has to marry YOU. Marriage today only marginally better; if Britney Spears's 55 hour "just for fun" marriage wasn't the deathblow to the institution, it can surely survive being extended to same-sex couples.

[–]JCelsius 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I completely agree with you, but adultery is actually a class four misdemeanor, at least where I live.

[–]Kazyole 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Interesting, and a quick google search proves that to be true in a few places.

I would imagine/hope that's one of those laws (like the sodomy laws that still exist in a few places) that isn't actually enforced...

I would also guess that if someone were to ever choose to challenge that law, it would have to be overturned. Adultery as it relates to marriage is a violation of a civil contract; there's no real grounds for the government to enforce a law which restricts who you're allowed to have sex with.

[–]DingDongSeven 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Absolutely. Hell, the bible only condemns male homosexuality — never female. So if they'd actually read the damn book, they should have no problem with lesbians marrying. But of course, like all Christians, they've never actually read the bible — and again, it's just a matter of selectively using passages from these texts to justify their own sexual hangups.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Wrong. Romans 1:26 is usually taken to be condemning female homosexuality.

[–]EarthRester 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I have not met any of these atheist homophobes. I don't doubt that they exist, but the percentage is bound to be far lower than in a group who claims to have an infallible book written by god that calls homosexuality an abomination.

But yes, there are plenty of perfectly tolerant religious individuals. It's the evangelicals that give the rest a bad name

[–]popof_ 6 points7 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Definitely, but even as a relatively smaller number, the fact that they are still a significant amount is worth not ignoring, that's all.

It's not so black and white. I've come across plenty of assholes who gave as much a shit about our LGBT rights as they did "love thy neighbor" or any type of divine figure. At the same time, I've also met some incredibly nice and supportive folks, both atheists and Christians alike. Hell, Stephen Colbert just did a It Gets Better video, and he's a practicing Sunday School teacher. These gestures can't be ignored and overshadowed by the idiots, as you imply.

But yes, there are plenty of perfectly tolerant religious individuals. It's the evangelicals that give the rest a bad name

I don't understand how it's to hard to explain, you simply say "These two men are getting married because they love each other."

This is what i imagine those parent's must look like.

[–]marvelously 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's not. Parents make up issues and project them onto their kids. My parents never had a problem explaining it to us kids. And my kid and his friends have no hang ups about gay people either. It does not trip them up. It just is.

[–]hansun 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The reason why it's difficult for some people to explain is that the sentence doesn't make sense to them, it doesn't fit the definition of "married" they've internalized.

It makes as much sense to the hypothetical parents as it would be for you to explain, for example, the sentence "a homeopath is a trained medical doctor because he has a piece of paper saying he is one and he treats people's illnesses". If you believed that homeopaths were quacks, would you say that sentence to your kids? Probably not.

Does it matter that homeopaths don't affect your life since you don't go them? No, that's not the point. Would you be upset if homeopathy started receiving mainstream acceptance and the same rights and abilities as medical doctors? You probably would be.

It's not that you wouldn't want to talk to your kids. Your internal understanding is incompatible with the concept, so you would say something else.

Homophobic/conservative/religious parents talk to their kids all the time. Just not in socially progressive terms.

It nearly brings me to tears when ever this man says anything. He is brilliant (I'm not even European). I just can't believe it has taken this long for people to realize how amazing this man is as a comic, and as a generally logical awesome person. He has been my number one stand up comic ever since I saw him 7 years ago.

If straight people think they have an entitlement to decide whether or not gay people get married, it's only fair that straight people should have to face a council of homosexuals that decide whether or not they can get married.

There are actual people that fight for the "right" to let their government intrude on personal relations. I hope they win soon so we can get on to more pressing issues.

Why are we still allowed to have sex? How do you expect me to explain to my child where babies come from?!

I seriously don't understand why people have an issue with The Gays. It's weird.

I have loved Louis for years and I'm glad he's getting the recognition he deserves. Also, whoever made this forgot the line that comes after. "He's probably a faggot anyway."

gotta love Louis CK. Simply the best out there. I think it's funny that he goes on to say that unless 2 men are blowing each other on your lawn as you are mowing it...then it REALLY has NO effect on your life...lol :)

I would have that man's baby if the laws of nature would allow it.

"You lucky, you just have to explain your kid how "two men are getting married", imagine if you have to explain them, how they gonna have babies?"
