Can someone who speaks Mandarin or Cantonese tell me if I am correct? From what I understand, it is Japanese that doesn't have an L, and native speakers will pronounce the L as and R. Mandarin and Cantonese have an L, so a Chinese person would not mispronounce broccoli in such a way.

[–]waxwing 17 points18 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

There is a certain subset of Cantonese speakers from the south who have a lot of trouble with L and R in a similar way to Japanese speakers. Amongst native Mandarin speakers from the north, I never encountered such a thing.

Of course a lot of southerners don't have Cantonese as a first language, as there are various dialects and even other languages.

[–]xtirpation 12 points13 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

As far as I know (as a fluent Cantonese-speaker) we don't replace the 'L' sound with an 'R' sound. We do, however, replace 'R' with 'L'. So for example, "Sorry" might be "Solly" but "Hello" wouldn't be "Herro"

[–]waxwing 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think that's right, mostly. According to my memory, many regional dialects or languages across southern China and southeast Asia (I think it's technically the "Sino-Tibetan" group of languages) have this similar problem with speaking English, but there are variations. I think the letter "N" is sometimes a problem too.

[–]heliosbird 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This makes sense. I'm exposed to a lot more Mandarin than Cantonese, so I didn't know this (not that I speak any Asian language apart from high school Japanese and Chinese signs and menus).

[–]Achalemoipas -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Also, Mandarin and Cantonese are just two of the 14 main Chinese dialects.

[–]gniuz 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That is more likely from Korea. Google Jang Teu. You are right about L and R thing. Chinese person will probably pronounce it as beloccoli, not broccori.

[–]Aksalon 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's a Korean grocery store in Montreal.

And a Korean person wouldn't pronounce it "broccori" either. You're implying that consonant cluster restrictions apply in Chinese dialects, and the same goes for Korean. A Korean would pronounce it "buh-roh-kol-lee".

Obviously the person wasn't trying to emulate their Korean pronunciation but just spell the word as it's written in English, and ended up mixing up an L with an R.

[–]heliosbird 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Thanks!

[–]dontlookatmynameok 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You are indeed correct.

  • Cantonese are more likely to mix up L and N (noise -> loise, name -> lame, many -> manly).
  • There is no R in the language, and it is typically substituted with W or L (row -> wo, tomorrow -> tomollow), or simply ommitted (broccoli -> boccoli).

  • TH is typically replaced by F (thing -> fing) or D (them -> dem).

  • V is often replaced by F (love -> luff).

[–]iubuntu10 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

most accurate one!!!

few people notice Cantonese's "TH" sound, especially "thing" "thought", but I am not sure about "them" "they".

[–]smokey_smokerson 1 point2 points ago

Cantonese is spoken in malaysia. Also cantonese is not an ethnicity.

[–]dontlookatmynameok 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Nobody said anything about ethnicity. Texans and Californians are also not ethnicity, yet we can still discuss linguistic quirks about them.

[–]dontlookatmynameok 0 points1 point ago

Um, I did not claim or imply Cantonese is an ethnicity. Where did that come from?

"My British co-worker doesn't sound like a Texan." "Because he's not a Texan?" "Texan is not an ethinicity!"

[–]smokey_smokerson 0 points1 point ago

Yuppers, full on Malaysian. His favourite phrases were"just puh eet ouwt" ,"we need more broccori", and "those fucking assholes" ( everyone was a fucking asshole). Oh and, "young dumb and full of cum". Much of the other phrases he uttered were unintelligible , he was a riot to work with.

I am learning both Japanese and Mandarin, but neither is the language of the market's owners: I frequent the other market (the one on St. Catherine) which is owned and run by the same people. They are Korean (and they run a Korean Japanese market). I've often wondered why they misspell some of their produce. Like Zukini. And they call Chinese chives leeks.

The Japanese r, by the bye, is very similar to the d in buddy. I suspect that it was once a real r, as one way of denoting ferocity or arrogance is by trilling the r. That being said, depending on the accent of the speaker, the r might come out closer to an l or a d: one of my former Japanese teachers always said umblela.

This is also my first comment on Reddit: huzzah! Now, back to lurking.

[–]heliosbird 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Sorry, what do you mean by the buddy comment?

[–]n0exit 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The Japanese r/l sound is really neither. When we prounounce a word with an l as in lettuce in english, our tongue touches the back of our teeth. When we pronounce a word with an r as in ring, our tongue kind of floats. When Japanese pronounce a word with an r sound like kuri (くり), the tongue touches the roof of the mouth in about the same location that an english speakers tongue touches when saying the word buddy. So Japanese r is kind of in the middle of r, l and d.

[–]angrytortilla 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They could just call it Kai-Lan and let the English speakers figure it out for themselves.

[–]zakool21 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You're absolutely right about Mandarin. I can't stand that this is so commonly confused... flat out ignorant. Koreans and Japanese both don't have that L/R distinction.

[–]mittandbase 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah- in Japanese, the R/L sound is like the very beginning of a rolled R, which almost comes out like a D. A lot of slang Japanese uses a rolled R similar to Spanish...you'll hear that a lot from young males. The Yakuza are always presented in cinema as guys who like to act like dicks and roll their Rs

[–]heliosbird 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Thanks! I don't know very much about Korean, so I didn't know that. Glad I asked.

[–]asfasfasdfas -2 points-1 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No, Koreans have an L sound, but no R.

[–]dronebot 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The Korean character ㄹ is both L and R. Which way it leans depends on its position.

[–]asfasfasdfas -1 points0 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

How is ㄹ the equivalent of R? They sound nothing alike. The korean R is pronounced by pushing the tongue to the top of the mouth, whereas the English R has no contact between the top of the mouth and the tongue. This is also the reason it is very difficult for Koreans to pronounce any word with R in it.

For example, road vs 로드.

<--- bilingual Korean whose parents speak very little English.

[–]daliminator 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Not true. It can be pronounced either way, though it most often sounds like something in between, commonly represented as "rh" (Rhee, etc.).

[–]asfasfasdfas 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

see reply below.

[–]daliminator 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's not an "equivalent" in the same way that many vowel sounds in Western languages aren't truly equivalent (no matter how they might be represented), but are the closest you'll get. I disagree that they're "nothing alike"—it depends greatly on the speaker's dialect/accent, but there are definitely many cases in which a Westerner will hear an "r" sound.

[–]asfasfasdfas 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Strange, because I should be desensitized to it, but I hear it quite clearly. I have a Midwestern accent, and to me even the best English speaking fobs have trouble with R-words.

[–]artydecor 0 points1 point ago

There are a type of noodles in China called 拉麵 which is pronounced "La Mien" meaning pulled-noodles.

In Japan, those 2 words are known as "Ramen."

[–]Atemis 0 points1 point ago

Japanese speakers use R, as obosed to an L in their romaji, which exists to help foreign speakers to learn their language. The R and romaji is spoken with an Lr-type of sound. So arigato is spoken, "alrigato" with a very soft R-sound.

[–]HacksawHighway 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The manager of the restaurant I work in is a Chinese immigrant, and he pronounces the L sound as R generally. Actually, just last week he asked me if I had seen the broccori.
