Looking for an image subreddit with minimal rules? Check out /r/images

A place to share interesting photographs and pictures. Feel free to post your own, but please read the rules first (see below), and note that we are not a catch-all for general images (of screenshots, comics, etc.)

Spoiler code

Please mark spoilers like this:
[text here](/spoiler)

Hover over to read.

Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

If Bill Gates drops a thousand dollars, would he bother to pick it up because during the 4 seconds he picks it, he would've already earned it back.

[–]Oscar_Rowsdower 232 points233 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Of course he would. Then he'd have 2 grand, let out that fart, tie his shoes while he's down there, and leave a nice tip at the olive garden.

[–]garatron 69 points70 points ago

Don't you mean buy the Olive Garden?

[–]Titanomachy 166 points167 points ago

His tip was mistaken for an offer to purchase, and was accepted.

[–]lymn 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

In this hypothetical situation, it goes, if he dropped it on the way to work. So if he stopped to pick it up that's 4 seconds lost at the office, in which time he probably makes more than $5000 (if he spent it at his desk instead).

Although in reality I'm sure he can just breathe and rake in the cash

I've heard a story about Gates wandering around an airport parking lot in the early hours of the morning because he's too cheap to use valet parking.

[–]ronintetsuro 100 points101 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Rich people are notoriously cheap. That's how you stay rich.

[–]Mikevercetti 23 points24 points ago

While this is generally true, Gates can afford valet and first class.

[–]gospelwut 48 points49 points ago

So can a lot of people? If he doesn't want to spend the money, so be it. The guy is actually a remarkable philanthropist, immensely intelligent, and grasps concepts very well (e.g. global issues. Look up his TEDTalks). IIRC, he also is leaving his kids nothing.

[–]ionian 41 points42 points ago

I heard 10m each, no more. Enough to educate oneself in comfort and start a company anywhere if need be, but not live lavishly for life. I haven't a cite.

[–]bandannafantastic 52 points53 points ago

[–]berniew91 21 points22 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah I read this as well. He is giving them .02% of his wealth (10 million each). Enough to do anything, but not enough to do nothing.

[–][deleted] 15 points16 points ago

I'm pretty sure I could live quite comfortably with 10 million. 100 years worth of a 100k salary? Np.

[–][deleted] 24 points25 points ago

Google his mug shot. He was driving so fast that the cops arrested him and set his bail at a thousand dollars. He paid it with money he had in his pocket.

[–]Supersnazz 2 points3 points ago

He was arrested in mid 1977. I can't imagine why he would have had 1K in cash on him at that stage. I don't think he was particularly wealthy until the IBM PC was released 3 years later.

lol the thing about jordan making 178k a day is complete BS. 178k x 365= $64,970,000 a year, which is more than his net worth in that picture.

According to celebritynetworth.com michael jordan makes 40 million a year in endorsements and has a net worth of 500 million. This makes much more sense.

[–]ArnoldLayne 38 points39 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If he makes 5% a year on his .5 billion, that's 25 million. So he's pulling in about 65 million a year which is ... 178k a day.

[–]eggbrain 161 points162 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Lets actually examine this.

Bill Gates net worth is 56 billion, and lets assume a very conservative 1% interest a year.

Thats 560 million a year, or,

~$1.5 Million a day or, ~$64 thousand an hour or, ~$1065 a minute or, ~$17.75 a second.

Assuming a top of the line Lambo costs around $350,000, it would take about 6 hours tops for him to buy one.

[–]PhoenixReborn 165 points166 points ago

Not really since he's donating something like 99% of his wealth to charity. He can make as much money as he wants as far as I'm concerned.

[–]n00bspanker 106 points107 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The fact that he makes more money per hour than I do in an entire year is, though.

[–]Kuonji 34 points35 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well that is interest alone, not any sort of actual profits. Hope that makes you feel better.

[–]dwaxe 61 points62 points ago

[–]jmaccini 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

He's just saying it's less depressing because of that.

[–]sarcasmandsocialism 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes*. We gave him roads, education, police/fire/military protection, and so on, before he got rich. We also let him set up a "company" so he could borrow money without too much personal risk. In exchange, we expect a portion of his income for as long as he does business or lives in our country, and we expect a larger portion of his income when he gets so rich that the additional wealth isn't particularly useful for him.

* (We won't actually limit his money...he can make as much as he wants, but we expect a percent of his profits to go to our country or to charity.)

[–]Conde_Nasty 15 points16 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

How's that depressing?

People who react in such a way seem to have a very, very poor understanding about currency, capital and credit. This isn't to be inflammatory, it's just that such emotional reactions wouldn't be there with a factual understanding behind the numbers. Run the numbers on a small scale and then scale that up. When does it start becoming depressing?

Do you realize how much money has been generated by the kind of money we're talking about? (I'm, like the OP, assuming all of his money is held in one place at a set interest for hypothetical purposes, by the way) But the reason interest isn't "depressing" is that currency on it's own generates huge amounts of revenue from interest fees taken from consumers as well as earnings from holdings, bonds, etc. The bank merely gives a guaranteed percentage to you in exchange for this. Hypothetically, they couldn't collect those fees without your money.

Also, think of how much money depreciates. If the dollar drops 1% in value in one day, how much did Bill Gates lose? It goes both ways as well.

[–]PunIntendedSorry 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Depressing is right. Considering how much the market has dropped in the past couple weeks, he's probably losing more per hour (avg.) than we'll make in our lives.

[–]alexander_the_grate 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

[–]IAlwaysMissThePoint 7 points8 points ago

I've heard that Bill Gates is very wealthy. He probably already has enough money to buy a Lamborghini without waiting at all.

[–]pinkfairy10 32 points33 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Bill Gates would have to be the worst investor ever to only make that much on his money.

He could put it in the most conservative goverment bond and still at least make 4% interest...too drunk to figure out the time for that tho..

[–]eggbrain 15 points16 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I was more calculating it as a worst case scenario, ie, this would probably be TOPS the longest he would have to wait to get a lambo, and only gets faster if you considered he would get much more with that much money.

That said, to do the math is easy: if 1% takes 6 hours, then 4% would be 4x as fast, or 6/4 = ~1.5 hours max.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

and even then you're only relying on interest, not new money.

""Gates 959"

The "Gates 959" is an infamous car,[10] one of the Porsche 959s built in the mid-eighties, imported by Bill Gates to the United States in 1987. Gates' fellow Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen imported another one, as did Porsche collector Jerry Seinfeld. These cars had not been approved by regulators and had no Department of Transportation‎ and Environmental Protection Agency‎ approval. The "Gates 959" was stored for 13 years by the Customs Service at the Port of Seattle, until regulations were changed to allow "Autos of Interest" to be imported with severe limitations on their use.[10] Gates and Allen both helped pass the "Show and Display" law.[10][11]"

I found his car (which is basically the one in the photo -- silver mercedes s55 amg, no license plate et al.) on the visitor parking of Apple HQ another day and I touched it. One of the greatest days of my life.

When my dad when to the huge apple giftshop or w/e down there he took a picture of Job's car double parked in the handicapped spots out front. Not too surprising :p.

Bill Gates is like the anti-rich person. Sure, he lives in a really nice, expensive house, but he's not one to flaunt his money. His big focus these days is charity and even when he dies most of his money is going to charity. He's managed to remain humble. I could never picture him driving a Lamborghini.

[–]Brandaman 33 points34 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, I swear I read he's only giving his kids like 0.1% of his money because he doesn't want them to live a life ridiculously easily. Although that's still a lot of money.

[–][deleted] 17 points18 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If the amount higher up in the comments is right, that's still 560 million dollars... I don't think I've ever really comprehended how ridiculously wealthy this man is before.

Quick, let's start a charity for them and get Bill to donate to it.

[–]sorcut3141 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If .1% of his wealth is 560 million dollars that would mean he's worth 560 billion, which be enough money to buy 100% of Google and Apple at today's market capitalization.

So, if "nice guys" give their money away (Gates, Buffet), what kind of family values those people who don't give it away pass to the next generation. ....

Assuming we have 900,000 redditors (/r/pics has 813,000 or so and not all redditors are subscribed to it) Bill Gates could buy each and every one of us about 61 years of reddit Gold, if he used his entire net worth (estimating for a $50,000,000,000 net worth)

[–][deleted] 15 points16 points ago

Gates isn't as relevant a target these days, what with his retarded amounts of charitable giving, as say, Lloyd Blankfein would be.

[–][deleted] 20 points21 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

dude are you kidding me? while we all would love to hate on blankfein because he's goldman CEO, that guy is pretty badass

he grew up in linden houses (public housing project in brooklyn). very much lower middle class if not straight up poor. was brilliant, went to harvard, then HBS. wasn't hired directly into banking because of his background (not well connected & jewish = fuck off)

then he basically worked his way to the top of one of the most competitive banks.

[–]f1fan65 12 points13 points ago

it is, he (gates) is calling for the top 50 billionares to give away half of their net worth to charity, really it makes sense, what can you do with 20 billion that you realisticly cannot do with ten?

I think I see what you did there. Because the gates' a millionaire. so in the time that I scrolled down. that cash was put in his account.

Ferraris are fine, and porches are great. but with money like that, it's a jet you would take. To paris or LA or Rome if you'd like. He gives money to charity and that shit is nice.

I can't remember what I was watching .. but they explained that if you stacked all of Bill Gates money in a single file column of $100 notes (which isn't possible but whatever) and put it under his bed, if he fell off his bed it'd take him 18 minutes to hit the ground if he was in regular gravity.

But if you shoveled his interest underneath the pile as he fell (again, that wouldn't even work) he'd never hit the ground because of the rate he earns money.

[–]jiayo 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on
