Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

Is this before or after Jackson backstabbed Paul and outbid him to the Beatles Catalogue? Cunt.

Before I begin I'd like to say that I'm a fan of both Michael and Paul (I especially love Say Say Say).

Guess who told Michael about the Beatles Catalogue? Paul.

Who was unwilling to pay all the money to get his music (plus some from other artists)? Paul.

Another key point here is that although Michael Jackson received 50% of the royalties generated by Beatles songs by virtue of his ownership of the publishing rights, Paul McCartney and John Lennon (and Lennon's estate, now that he's dead) have always received their 50% songwriter's share of the royalties for all Lennon-McCartney songs. Neither ATV's nor Michael Jackson's acquisition of Northern Songs changed that

There's more information on that here.

I remember reading in a book quite a while ago (but I'm not 100% sure on this) that Paul went to Yoko Ono and tried to convince her to chip in with his bid so they could both own the catalogue. Why she didn't I have no idea. Why Paul didn't team up with Michael I don't know either.

It is my understanding that Paul advised Michael to get in the publishing business in general, not specifically to go after the Beatles. Michael then goes around and outbids Paul to the Beatles' catalogue. Dick move #1.

Dick move #2, and this is what gets on my nerves, is that Michael allows a timeless song like Revolution (and other Beatles songs) to be used in a Nike commercial. This is unforgivable. Fuck Michael.

How is Michael outbidding Paul a "dick move"?

At the time, McCartney was one of the richest entertainers in the world, with a net worth of $560 million and a royalty income of $41 million.

I'll use a quote by Michael himself: "If he didn't want to invest $47.5 million in his own songs, then he shouldn't come crying to me now".

I haven't seen the Nike commercials so I will not comment on them but Michael says that it would enable a new generation of fans to enjoy the music (just like I guess Michael's death has caused the latest generation to experience his music). Whether or not you approve the use of those songs in those commercials is completely up to you but Yoko Ono speaks well:

Ono was pleased that Jackson had acquired Northern Songs and called it a "blessing".[1] Speaking in November, 1990, Ono stated, "Businessmen who aren't artists themselves wouldn't have the consideration Michael has. He loves the songs. He's very caring."

Which is true. I'm sure Michael Jackson refused many offers for the use of Beatles music in lots of media whereas other businessmen would've probably accepted most offers given to them had they have won the rights.

I do think it's really sad that Michael and Paul drifted apart. The few songs they made together are actually really good and it would've been awesome to have seem them make more.

You know I've been thinking about the stuff you wrote and you're absolutely right. Paul should have invested more if he really wanted to get them. There's no reason for him to be pissed off when he didn't want to pay for his own songs. I take my back my Michael-hating :)

Thank you for this.
