r/standupcomedy is a place to share good stand-up comedy, or bad stand-up comedy, or to talk about things that have to do with stand-up comedy. Or to post questions so that other comics or fans can answer them. Or to post a thread that says 'I hate the guy that made a sub-reddit a long time and now doesn't devote forty-six hours a week to staying on top of things around here... isn't that what we're paying him for!' Or to be upvoted. Or to be downvoted. Or to be angry when one, or both, of the other happen. Or to lurk and never subscribe. Or to hover your hand over the keyboard wondering if you should submit your latest 5 mins simultaneously afraid of rejection and yet certain that as soon as the world sees your first applause break you'll most certainly get whisked away in a private jet to sell out theatres across the globe. Or to post a long, bitter complaint about the stupid open micer with 5 minutes who was whisked away in a private jet and given nine sitcoms and a ninety city tour because he happened to tell just the right joke about hipster glasses at just the right time while you toil away in your 19th year gettin' no respect like your name was Rodney D. Or to do whatever the f you want, and not expect anything, and just submit stuff and comment on it and vote on it and if shit gets too crazy for you... turn your face away from the flickering screen and remember that the internet isn't a real place.

Hey man, My name is Ian Stuart. I'm a comic from New England, and I've just released my first Album, "Day Drinker". It was released digitally for $2 so I can raise funds to publish physical copies myself. You can listen for free, and I encourage any and all peer-reviews. A link can be found on my website- www.IhateIanStuart.com If possible I'd love to be added onto your side bar for r/standupcomedy. Thanks for your time! -Ian

His scene on Louie this week was one of the most interesting things I've seen in a long time. I felt like it was a conversation Louis and Dane actually had and it felt painfully real.

Yes! That scene was amazing, and uncomfortable, and brilliant. Loved it.

Very good performer. Very poor comedian. MadTv did the best parody possible of him.

I've always liked Anthony Jeselnik's the most.

What's the difference? ... A comedian tells his observations from his point of view while performing it to a style that accents their story-telling/observations.

To me, they both go hand in hand.

For those of you who don't like Dane Cook, I'd encourage you to listen to his interview on WTF with Marc Maron (the podcast). He tells a pretty amazing story of his career, including his rise to fame, when people started hating him, and his parents dying within 6 months of each other. The interview shows a completely different side of him that is the opposite of his comedy persona. It made me get interested in him again and I find myself listening to his most recent album more often.

That really doesn't say much about his comedy. Yeah sure, he's probably a nice guy, but is he funny? Not in my opinion, some of his stuff makes me smile but that's about it. Hell, if you like him, have at it, but personal traits have little to do with the actual material.

He's got a niche, whether it's teenagers, frat boys or sororstitutes, it doesn't matter, he's funny to somebody enough to sell out stadiums. His material connects with a lot of people on some level. Therefore I think he's a legitimate comedian. Maybe not a comedian's comedian, but a comedian nonetheless.

Well said. Comedy is subjective. You're not supposed to find EVERY comedian funny.

Jesus christ people, don't downvote him just because you don't agree with him.

Holy shit, I never thought I'd find another person on this site who likes Dane Cook, let alone two people! This is a great day.

Downvotes abound, I agree. But to me there is no excuse for like Nickleback though.

As much as people don't like him. He is selling out arenas and making tons of cash.

Edit: Why are you down voting the truth?

I enjoyed Dane's older material before he became quite the bigshot he became, but it had been a while since I'd watched him so I decided to check out that last special. I was shocked at how completely unfunny I found it. I mean, I respect everything he went through and I like that he was more personal on stage, but there was such a complete lack of jokes. At the end of it I was pretty sure I only laughed once, and it wasn't even a big laugh.

[–]Jurynelson 0 points1 point ago

Hm. It came on at midnight or something after Colbert and I was too tired to change the channel. It really took me by surprise and I laughed my ass off.

I guess it was sort of lacking in "jokes" but packed to the gills with "bits," which is the way I like my comedy, thank you very much.

[–]colin826 1 point2 points ago

In an attempt to avoid a semantic argument of 'jokes' v. 'bits', I will simply clarify that the special strongly favoured set-up, exposition, and story-telling. It just seemed like he didn't say very many things that were intended to get a laugh. It was less an issue of "I don't find this funny" and more of a "why isn't he trying to be funny?"

But I'm not trying to suggest that you should hate the special or anything. I just respectfully disagree.

[–]Jurynelson 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Oh, I completely agree. I don't mean to suggest that you're dumb or biased for not liking it. I just like to use it as an example of Dane Cook not being "Dane Cook."

He even cut his spikey douche hair off. It's not amazing by any means, but it is a comedy special that looks like a comedy special that any other comedian might do.

The one where he went all dark?

[–]Jurynelson -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yup. In the time between Tourgasm and Isolated Incident, Dane Cook became what we know as a "Stand-Up Comedian."

It's not the truth any more as far as I can tell. He made some bad movies, and I think a lot of people realize that he just uses tricks and gimmicks and isn't very funny or insightful. Look at his website and tell me what he's doing, cause I can't figure it out. I think he just tweets.

His brother was also arrested for stealing a shit load of his money, so who knows how rich he is. He has no tour at all that I can find, and a couple of parts in movies for this year, but nothing else in the planning.

He is also getting a little old to be acting like a college boy.

This may be the funniest thing I've seen him in... ever.

[–]SteepedinTruth 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

He's a pretty likable performer, just not the funniest comedian ever. I'd still place him around the middle of the pack. I think his last album, Isolated Incident, was actually pretty decent compared to that... awful Vicious Circle; arenas are probably the worst spot to attend a comedy performance, and his material was inescapably flat.
