You learn something new every day; what did you learn today?

Submit interesting and specific facts that you just found out (not broad information you looked up, TodayILearned is not /r/wikipedia).

Posting rules

  1. Submissions must be verifiable. Please link directly to a reliable source that supports the claim in your post title. Images alone do not count as valid references. Videos are fine so long as they come from reputable sources (e.g. BBC, discovery, etc).

  2. No personal opinions, anecdotes or subjective statements (e.g "TIL xyz is a great movie").

  3. No news or recent sources. News and any sources (blog, article, press release, video, etc.) more recent than two months are not allowed.

  4. No politics. Historical politics are fine, but anything relating to current politics/politicians is not allowed.

  5. No misleading claims. Posts that omit essential information, or present unrelated facts in a way that suggest a connection, will be removed.

  6. Rephrase your post title if the following are not met:

    1. Titles must begin with "TIL ..."
    2. Make them descriptive, concise and specific (e.g. not "TIL something interesting about bacon").
    3. Titles must be able to stand on their own without requiring readers to click on a link. Starting your title with a why/what/who/where/how modifier should be unnecessary.
    4. "TIL about ..." and other broad posts don't belong on TIL. Try /r/Wikipedia, etc. instead, or be more specific (and avoid the word "about").
    5. "TIL how to ..." posts belong on /r/HowTo.
  7. No trivial or obvious facts (e.g. "TIL the sky is blue"), or facts that appeal only to a narrow audience, specifically no software/website tips (e.g. "TIL you can click on widgets in WidgetMaker 1.22").

(Why we need rules and the TIL FAQ)

My 15 year old cousin recently laughed at my Uncle and I for trying to get Harry Potter Part 7a at a movie rental place for her to watch before we took her to the last movie. She was like "why not just watch it on YouTube?" So the adults had to patiently explain to her how they wouldn't have the entire thing online, copyright and all that...

After we gave up trying to find it, she put it on YouTube. Every minute of it, nothing muted. It was cut into parts, but in high quality. I was really surprised. She thought were idiots. I guess we were.

[–]pet_medic 1 point2 points ago

I think that would have been a bit moralizing and annoying, especially considering she owned all the books and DVDs (she was visiting her out-of-state uncle) and was about to go to the movie, bringing along two of her relatives who otherwise might not have gone.

But I encourage you to ask that question to all of your friends and relatives and see how it strengthens those relationships.

This is a Buster Keaton film, and is utterly hilarious. I saw it a couple years ago, and it's one of the funniest things I've ever seen.

It beats out the majority of slapstick comedy today.

I admit, I was turned off a little before watching it, on account of it being an old silent film, but I'm glad I watched it -- it's fantastic.

I definitely recommend it for anyone who wants a laugh.

You really sure that? Houdini gave Buster that nickname when he was 1 or 2 years old, after he fell down a flight of stairs & walked away unfazed.

Now it's true Roscoe Arbuckle hated the 'Fatty' nickname.

Shortly after these film were made, the independent-minded Keaton made the mistake of signing a contract with MGM, whose regimented ways clashed with his scrupulous perfectionism. Five years after MGM hired him, it dropped his contract and Keaton drifted into obscurity.

And a guest role in Beach Blanket Bingo. ಠ_ಠ

From the trivia: "In the scenes with the opposing armies marching, Keaton had the extras (which included Oregon National Guard troops) wear the uniforms of the Confederacy and march in one direction past the camera, then he had them change uniforms to the Union blue and had them march past the camera in the other direction."

Reminds me; I once played poker with a guy who worked as an extra. He was on one of the last episodes of The New Avengers, and due to budget concerns the same people played the armies of two warring nations. Early on they shot him throwing a grenade in one uniform. Towards the end of the day, after changing uniforms, the director decided to film the reaction shot to the incoming grenade and picked the same guy. Since the director was a jerk, nobody told him so the same guy throws the grenade and reacts to its arrival.

Great movie. I watched it a couple of weeks ago. One of the best silent films I've seen, because the story can be followed from start to finish and it makes sense. A lot of silents seem to wander all over the place and become incoherent.

[–]redjimdit 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I saw The General about 6 years ago, it was at 3am on Turner Classic Movies. Before this, I had literally never seen a silent movie.

I sat there slack-jawed, wondering just how they made movies so great with no vocal tracks.

After The General, they played The Navigator. I got written up at work because I forgot to take somebody's money that day, I was so tired. It was worth it to see those two movies.

[–]FacelessBureaucrat 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I hope you kept going through Buster Keaton's oeuvre, because even his short films are great. Ebert rightly considers him the greatest actor-director ever. Keaton not only did all his own stunts, but did many of the stunts for his other actors. A lot of his stuff clearly inspired parkour and Jackie Chan's stunt comedy.

One of my favorite films. The stunts Keaton pulls off in this film, all by himself with zero special effects or editing will make you claw your armrests. Also recommend Steamboat Bill Jr., highly!

[–]bobsmurf 31 points32 points ago

Buster Keaton has the best stunts. He moves so fluidly. There's a few moments in this film especially I find myself rewinding over and over.

[–]Veggieleezy 15 points16 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

He did them all himself, too. Once he even broke his neck and kept filming; didn't even know it had happened until he called "cut".

[–]lovemyguitar 24 points25 points ago*

Actually, he didn't realize until he got a physical years later.

And the film was Sherlock, Jr.

Edit: The first scene in this video is where it happened, when he falls from the water spout onto the railroad track. According to the excellent bio Tempest In A Flat Hat, he merely had a headache afterwards and went to bed early that night.

[–]Veggieleezy 4 points5 points ago

Buster Keaton showed a visitor the gag where he stands next to a grand piano. First he lifts one leg up and rests it on the piano. Then he lifts the other leg up there too, and falls flat on the floor, to comic effect.

The visitor asked "How on earth do you do that without hurting yourself?"

Buster replied "Without hurting myself? I don't know."

I feel that Keaton was so influential, we can't even put a finger on each actor and film he has touched. It's neat to see a Keaton film and say "Ah! That's where movies were born!" (same for Harold Lloyd, Fatty Arbuckle, Chaplin .. ) It would be neat to find a catalogue of gags and routines though!

I also really love One Week. Its from 1920, well before The General and Steamboat Bill Jr. but its every bit as amazing. The house sets (both the interior set and the exterior) they use in it are absolutely mind boggling. Fantastic stuff. Its also much shorter than those two so its the intro movie I show to people who havent seen him before and cant get into the idea of a silent film.

This movie will ALWAYS be something special to me. In 1991 my father died of a heart attack at the age of 58, I was 23. The day after he died I was lying in bed quite devestated and depressed as all hell. There was nothing else to do but turn on the tv and the local PBS station was showing The General. To this day I remember laughing and then bawling immediately after with the realization that I had just actually laughed at something when I was feeling that I would never laugh at anything again.

Point of story: Buston Keaton...funny as fuk.

The first try at getting the cannonball to shoot out of the cannon into the cab caused the ball to shoot with too much force. To cause the cannonball to shoot into the cab of the engine correctly, Keaton had to count out the grains of gunpowder with tweezers.

[–]adamjon858 7 points8 points ago

Watch a few silent films. You'll get an appreciation for the craziness of the stunts they pull without any use of special effects.

The most famous example would have to be Harold Lloyd in this scene: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QEcTjhUN_7U

Skip to 4:02 to shat yourself. Him dangling 7 stories off the side of a building by one hand and then falling through canopies is 100% real. You will not be disappointed in watching this.

[–]huck08 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

From IMDB:

A stuntman revealed for the first time in the television documentary, Hollywood, that Harold Lloyd actually climbed a fake building facade that was constructed over another building's rooftop, positioned so the camera angle could capture the street scene below. The stuntman also revealed that he doubled for Lloyd in the long shots of him climbing the building in the distance. Up until then, even the Time-Life version of Safety Last! that was aired on PBS contained an opening title declaring that Harold Lloyd climbed the building himself and without the use of a stuntman or trick photography.

The stuntman stated that he chose to suppress this information until Lloyd's death, and yet, he did not want to detract from the danger of Lloyd's actual stunt work. Lloyd performed the majority of the stunts himself on the rigged facade over a small platform, which was built near the rooftop's edge and still had to be raised a great height to get the proper street perspective for the camera. The size of the platform did not offer much of a safety net, and had Lloyd fallen, there was the risk he could have tumbled off the platform.

So still pretty cool, but not 100% real.

[–]adamjon858 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Good to know. I've watched almost all Harold Lloyd's movies and even a few documentaries on him and never did I doubt that it was real based on what I read. Guess they were more tricksy then we thought!

That said, there is another scene from another movie of his where you watch him in one camera cut climb a building and fall 2 stories, landing on an awning 20 feet off the ground before falling off that onto a moving car. I'll try and find it.

Either ~$517,000 or $~535,000, depending on whether you convert $500,000 in 2010 dollars to 2011 dollars or $42,000 in 1926 dollars to 2011 dollars respectively.

As a side note, if you convert $42,000 in 1926 dollars to 2010 dollars you come up with ~$517,000, which I would probably just round down to half a million because it clearly didn't cost exactly $42,000 to do the shot in 1926 so there's no point in trying to be so accurate about it.

I live in Cottage Grove, Oregon, where this scene was filmed. I could literally walk to where that bridge was. The Cottage Grove Historical Society holds a Buster Keaton film festival where we watch a few hours of original reels every October at the local library. It's pretty awesome and I'm the only 15-year-old among 70 dying people. Shit's still funny. Buster was a genius.

That's why it was so darn expensive. You try painting fire and water black and white.

The gif didn't load for me so I thought, "a train going across a bridge was the most exspenive thing? I guess they didn't make many silent films."

I like the fact once the stunt was done "The Texas itself remained in the river until WWII, when it was salvaged for scrap iron."

Ah the good old days. Fuck you nature, we'll just leave that train there.

An early steam locomotive is just steel, with a tender full of wood and water. That doesn't incur much of an environmental footprint. Given time it would just turn back into a pile of iron ore.

These days locomotives are filled with plastics, rubber, fuel oil, and who knows what else.

Huzzah for silent films (I'm a 20 year old who grew up watching silent and b&w films as my parents couldn't stand anything with even the word "hell").

Buster Keaton, The General. Possibly my favorite silent movie -- I bet I've watched it 20 times. It's available on Netflix for anyone who wants to see it. Crazy how well the movie works even without any audible dialog. As a forewarning, the AMC version has a much better organ soundtrack than the Netflix one. It synchs up perfectly with a lot of the stuff in the movie.

Had a hunch it would be either this or The Navigator (a MUST SEE, huge cruise ship set adrift gets taken over by 1000's of natives) as soon as I read the title, Reddit didn't disappoint.

Buster Keaton died of a terminal illness, but never got the chance to say goodbye to his loved ones. Doctor's misdiagnosed his lung cancer has simple bronchitis and he spent his final days pacing back in forth in his hospital room, never getting to say his goodbyes or making amends for the regrets in his life. His final moments were robbed from him.

Nobody has commented on the loss of a wonderful old 4-4-0 'American' type steam locomotive.

Czar_Chasm has calculated this scene cost an inflation-adjusted $535,611.53. Ironically, that's about how much that old engine would sell for today if it had survived. Most 19th century standard-gauge 4-4-0s are in museums, with wealthy competing for few remaining in private hands.

Is Mel Brooks' Silent Movie included in that 'silent film history'? I'd tend to think Silent Movie had some shot that was more expensive just virtue of the years that had elapsed.

[–]jumpyg1258 5 points6 points ago

The General is an excellent film. From my recollection of Buster Keaton's biography, he actually causes a fracture in his neck in this film when he falls off the water spout, hence the fraction of a second delay before he runs off. He doesn't even find out about the fracture for many years.

Also, the guy shot many films (I'm not sure if this one or not) several times, so that the silent films would have the correct lipreading for several languages (I think there were about 3-4 languages he did for every scene).
