Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  6. No animated images. Please submit them to /r/gif, /r/gifs, or /r/reactiongifs instead.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

I remember reading that when your cat brings a dead animal to you or leaves it on your doorstep he's really telling you that you suck at hunting.

It is more imitating their behaviour when learning to hunt: bringing the kill back to mum. They are showing you they can hunt well, rather than point out that you can't.

not necessarily. as proving itself to mommy, yes, but I had a cat that brought dead mice to my father-in-law. He was the only one who didn't put food in his bowl, so he was bad at hunting.

i thought it was because the pack did the majority of the hunting and the alpha always got first dibs on the kill?

The cats that our domestics descend from were not pack animals, instead leading relatively solitary lives except when on heat or with kittens, so I doubt it is an alpha member thing.

I want it to teach me how to hunt. I can just imagine stalking the woods with my cat at my side, sharing a kill together, and leaving those woods stronger. I'd probably do an AMA afterwards.

Just to let you know, you'll end up eating lots of winged insects and tiny rodents. But don't let that take the glory of the kill away from you or anything.

Gotta start somewhere. Eventually, when my cat master thinks I'm ready, we will move on to larger game.

I would be totally supportive if, say, you owned a tiger or lion.

They're not presents.

They are threats!

My cat would wake me up in the middle of the night to show me her kill. She would not leave me alone until I turned on the light and praised her. Then after I acknowledged it she would noisily eat it while I tried to sleep. Bone crunching and all. I was too icked out by dead things to get rid of the mice. So I just tried to not listen.

I miss her. She was my companion from the time I was 7 to 25. She was mean to everyone but me.

**tl;dr: My old cat liked to eat mice in my bedroom late at night and creep me out.

When I was a kid we had a Siamese that ran away. A couple of years later I'd completely forgotten about her, but one day she showed up on our doorstep with a dead mouse, then just walked in and straight to her litterbox as though she'd never been gone. Still weirds me out to this day. The vet found ticks on her from BC and we were in Alberta.

My cat Charlie used to leave every summer and come back in the fall skinny, beat up, and scraggly as hell. He'd fatten up over winter and do it all again. One fall he just never came back. He was a trooper.

I've read that housecats can revert to their feral instincts almost instantaneously. I even heard one vet theorize that cats have never really "domesticated", they just recognize that it's easier to have someone feed and shelter them than try to find it themselves (but I never got a citation).

Some years back me and my roommates kept a tally of animals my cat murdered and brought us in a given year. The password to our wifi was 'killcount.'

My cat does it wrong. Doesn't bring murder presents but stuffed presents; a snowman, several bears one of which is the same size as her, slippers, socks, and a bunny twice her size. She might have a mild mental disability. It's cute though.
