Took me a minute to realize he's just walking along side of it, not riding it.

[–]mattindustries 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

He is going slow while pushing the bike and the tires are already flat. I ride with 40-60lbs on my touring bike, plus my own weight of ~200lbs. The spokes are most vulnerable to breaking while turning because of the lateral force. Tires (which are already out on this bike) are susceptible to pinch flats and bulging with the weight while going over bumps/potholes. If he is just pushing it straight there isn't much to worry about.

If you look closely, he's really using the bike as a sort of wheel barrow. He's just using the wheels to to absorb a bunch of the weight of the load and he is walking alongside the bike.

[–]assumetehposition 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Really he should just use a wheelbarrow.

[–]soyabstemio 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I've only ever seen one wheelbarrow in India. I think if you tried to bring one into the country, customs would confiscate it. They make one labourer able to do the work of three.

[–]procyon112 -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Wheelbarrows suck for brick. You can only fit a few tong. The bike here is serving more like a proper brick cart and using the natural friction of the brick for support. As long as the bike chassis doesn't give this is far superior.

We went from wartime (Sure, our women can work!) to "I need wifi so that I don't have to go back into the house to check the weather page" in less than 40 years.

If a country* is merely catching up that way, I bet it'll go much faster..

[–]forgetfuljones 0 points1 point ago

My whole point is that it's 'easier' to catch up than it is to push ahead alone, so yeah.

Also, it's not as though japan was bombed back to the stone age. Two cities were devastated, they still had all the infrastructure everywhere else to utlilise. The fact that their economy was devastated by being at war was at least as big a problem for them, as it was for everyone else.

Pretty cool but I'm curious how hard it could possibly be to construct a trailer? Then he could move much faster and with greater freedom.

Yes I know a lot of these areas are slums with very little, but we're talking a few planks of wood and some wheels.

[–]mattindustries 2 points3 points ago

His chain likely doesn't even work and the tires are flat... riding a flat bike with no chain while carrying a bunch of bricks would be pretty hard. That said, if he had things working and a trailer he might be able to start a business carrying things for people more quickly.

Goes to show just how much of their day is spent doing the things simply to keep them alive. No spare time or available parts to make the simplest of improvements on a bike.

We need to figure out an effective way of instilling this kind of effort into our future generations. We'd all benefit from the attitude that people who don't have much (like this guy, or our wartime grandparents).

How long does it take to stack all that?

Wouldn't the expense of getting/making a small wagon for the bricks be tiny compared to the time spent: stacking the bricks, balancing that shit, WALKING the bike, and the inevitable collapses and restacking?

With a wagon, he could move 3 times as many bricks per day, and it would very quickly pay for itself.

[–]forgetfuljones 3 points4 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Those are second hand bricks, and the bike is clearly not rideable, except perhaps like a velocipede. I think it's fair to say he doesn't have any access to a small wagon, or parts, or tools. So he's making lemonade.

edit:I thought velocipede just referred to the early, pedal-less variety of bikes. TIL.

editedit: There doesn't appear to be any mortar on those bricks, so perhaps you are correct. I was going by the major chips a few have, which happens a lot when you reclaim bricks.

Now that I look at it closer, I see that his tires aren't flat, they're just in danger of being pinched. Also, the chain appears to be in working order, it's just been taken off so he can push. A few seconds after the bricks are gone, and this guy has his ride home again.

[–]procyon112 0 points1 point ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm not so sure those are second hand. They are solid commons, which look pretty much like that new, especially if they've been on an exposed palette for a while.

He seems like a smart hoddie, so he's probably go about 1/4 of a sheet of plywood balanced on a wood horse with a notch for his arm/shoulder. Lean the bike up against the horse and you can stack the bricks like this, butted against the plywood in about 2 minutes. The bricks will over hang the plywood by their own friction and weight. shoulder under the plywood and you are only supporting the wood, nut the brick on the top of your shoulder, so no pain or stress to your body. Since you started out vertical, all the weight is directly down on the chassis (probably will bend the rims before too long though). Now you don't need to do much except supply forward momentum. With a weight this size, it will warn you when it starts to shift of the vertical long before it topples, and you've got handlebars that aren't being torc'd to compensate easily. If he were to lose control, he can dump his load easily by turning the wheel towards himself, and then it's a minor pickup job.

First hoddie rule. Everything you touch here is too heavy for mortals. Don't lift with the back, lift with the brain.
