Looking for an image subreddit with minimal rules? Check out /r/images

A place to share interesting photographs and pictures. Feel free to post your own, but please read the rules first (see below), and note that we are not a catch-all for general images (of screenshots, comics, etc.)

Spoiler code

Please mark spoilers like this:
[text here](/spoiler)

Hover over to read.

Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

"...lived to be 98 years of age."

What they don't include is that he still didn't die after that.

He lived to be 98. He's immortal and therefore still hasn't died, but he lived to be 98, too.

This is one of the more awkward adaptations of that Mitch Hedburg joke I've seen.

TIL that Samuel Whittemore was invincible.

[–]chadnotchad 91 points92 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samuel_Whittemore relevant: Whittemore was in his fields when he spotted an approaching British relief brigade under Earl Percy, sent to assist the retreat. Whittemore loaded his musket and ambushed the British from behind a nearby stone wall, killing one soldier. He then drew his dueling pistols and killed a grenadier and mortally wounded a second. He managed to fire five shots before a British detachment reached his position. Whittemore then attacked with a sword. He was shot in the face, bayoneted thirteen times, and left for dead in a pool of blood. He was found alive, trying to load his musket to fight again.

[–]Monkey_Xenu 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well the british didn't really invade "America" we basically created it, he was English to start with anyway.

Also the grave stone makes it sound bad that he was bayonetted and left for dead, it was war and he'd just killed three people, who he presumably left for dead. Still he's a very impressive man.

Also I should point out that the war of independence was essentially the French vs the few english soldiers who weren't in India.

[–]holodog 4 points5 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The naval battles were almost exclusively French vs British. The French did not openly join the war until something like two years into it, after the Americans had convinced them of their cause by forcing Gen. Burgoyne to surrender at Saratoga.

The land battles were US Revolutionaries, French and Spanish troops vs US Loyalists, British troops and German mercenaries. Indian tribes fought on both sides. Not really reliable statistics about how many of each that I can find.

This is even truer since the Deceleration wasnt even signed in 1775... the colonies were still British colonies, in every sense of the word...

[–]mike77777 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The Battles of Lexington and Concord were the first military engagements of the American Revolutionary War.[9][10] They were fought on April 19, 1775, in Middlesex County, Province of Massachusetts Bay, within the towns of Lexington, Concord, Lincoln, Menotomy (present-day Arlington), and Cambridge, near Boston. The battles marked the outbreak of open armed conflict between the Kingdom of Great Britain and its thirteen colonies in the mainland of British North America.

We were already at war in 1775.

[–]Quazifuji 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That actually says that you should downvote reposts, just don't complain about them. Downvoting reposts helps, it prevents things that two many people have seen before from making the front page. Complaining about reposts serves only to reduce the enjoyment people get out of the comment thread.

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Exactly. The reason why this has so many upvotes is because a lot of people haven't seen it. If it was, it would have been downvoted to oblivion.

Come on it was 10 months ago. I have not seen it earlier nor thousands of other redditors who up voted it to the front page.

Reddiquette:

Please don't: Complain about reposts. Reddit is dynamic. People come and go, and there are hundreds of subreddits on the front page. Just because you have seen it before doesn't mean everyone else has, and a link's presence on the front page indicates there are a lot of people who haven't seen it before. If you feel it's been reposted, downvote it. The most repetitive content on reddit is "This is a repost." Think about that.

Close, but you're on the wrong street. The monument is actually right here.

I used to live around the corner. If you poke through the neighborhood, you'll find that there are six or seven of these monuments, all describing equally insane and heroic deeds. Such as this one, unfortunately just a grey rectangle here. That one describes a tavern that used to be on the spot where a bunch of bystanders had their brains blown out.

Edit: btw, these are there because Arlington was the center of the bloodiest battle on the first day of the Revolutionary War. Also worth noting is the Jason Russell house, seen here. Jason Russell tried to defend his house, but instead he got bayoneted to death and eleven other colonials were killed.

I have a grandfather-relative who was shot twice at Bunker Hill, survived smallpox at Valley Forge - then went on to become a deacon at the North Church in Boston. He died at the age of 92. I think badass was the order of the day back then.

"Whittemore was in his fields when he spotted an approaching British relief brigade under Earl Percy, sent to assist the retreat. He was taken to Dr. Cotton Tufts of Medford, who perceived no hope for his survival. However, Whittemore lived another 18 years until dying of natural causes at the age of 98."

I wonder if folks who call for the levelling of Iraqi towns after attacks on American forces by insurgents think of this guy.

It's an honest question.

An undoubted patriot, and very much a badass, but how is he different from anyone who defends his homeland?

[–]the_weak_sauce 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

In most cases, the modern "freedom fighters" that you are referring to show a wanton disregard for the safety of even their own innocent countrymen, and often target the innocent in order to drive home a political point.

[–]Pooh_Bear 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

As someone who was deployed to Iraq, I'll try to give you an honest answer (speaking entirely for myself). You see, there was never just one group of "insurgents" like the media often portrays. You had Baath Party loyalists, various armed Sunni clans, Shiite militias, Al-Qaeda linked jihadis, criminal gangs, and people who were simply opposed to the US occupation. Sometimes, it wasn't organized at all, but maybe just some lone farmer who was angry about a tank that drove through his goat herd. For the insurgents who were only fighting against US forces, I really couldn't hold any hard feelings towards them or what they were doing. I wouldn't go as far as to say I was sympathetic, since they were trying to kill me, but I could at least understand and respect their motivation. If the tables were turned and it was my country being invaded, I might have even done the same thing. However, for the groups like Ansar al-Sunnia that would detonate car bombs at Shiite mosques and kill scores of innocent women and children, I have nothing but contempt. I never made any decision to level towns, but I hope that explanation (maybe) gives you an idea of the opinions of at least some soldiers on this matter. Once again, though, I can only speak for myself.

[–]omaca 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Thanks for the thoughtful response.

First, I'm glad you made it back OK. Seriously. :)

Second, I understand you position and I think you and I agree in general. I also have no respect for those that target civilians; by definition they are doing so to cause fear (ie, terror) and are therefore terrorists. They are attacking their own people (albeit often due to some misguided religious conflict). Perhaps occasionally in revenge. But they are terrorists.

These are not the people I was thinking about. You've effectively confirmed what I thought.

Their actions & justifications are "understandable", but of course so would be your actions in responding with force.

I guess that's what the British soldiers did to this guy; of course this particular reaction would now be considered criminal.

Thank you again.
