The 64 controller definitely falls under the category "looks stupid, but works, so it isn't stupid."

Exactly. That controller was meant for serious buisness. It fit my hands perfectly. Too bad they didn't design a stick that could stand lots of wear. The stick always broke after 1 year or so for me.

hehehe... funny thing.. a majority of my family are Women ( me, my sister, my mom and her 3 sisters, and 4 girl cousins and that's just on my mom's side) while there only being 4 men ( my dad, my uncle and 2 male cousins) and between all the cousins, giving the N64 controllers hell, the guy's controllers always broke, but the girl's stayed pretty much intact ( I still have like 3 original N64 controllers from when I was 11) unless it was some outside circumstance ( Like one controller getting mysteriously ending up under the tire of my aunts van.)

Well, for reference, I must have played on the N64 20+ hours a week. I really didn't have much else to do during those years.

... and the GC controller was Nintendo admitting that their initial attempt was 100% wacky. My neighbors had some third-party controller in a much better shape, kind a melted lumpy crescent that wedged the N64's buttons into an SNES-like configuration. It was better-designed than the first-party offering, even if the build quality was terrible.

[–]Hetzer 1 point2 points ago

 I like both the N64 controller and the GC controller. The former was wacky, sure, but once you figure out how to hold it (which admittedly took me a few days I think) it's fine.

I think I also have the same kind of off-brand controller. For whatever reason my brother has dug up our N64 and we've been playing Super Smash Bros over the weekend with a wonky green Nintendo N64 controller and one of those black crescent controllers. The former's stick is busted but it feels better than the latter (which is clearly made for people with giant hands).

the best part about the NES controller is the user friendly corners digging into your palms so that after playing for a few hours it looks like you have a stigmata

man the first x-box controller was designed for people with GIANT HANDS. i was 11 or 12 when it first came out and I could not hold it at all (possibly why I was so shitty at Halo)

I still have possibly the smallest hands of anybody I know, and I had no issue with the controller around 13 years old.

The Duke controller was pretty damn comfortable for long gaming stints.

n64 and gc controllers are some of the most comfortable controllers every created by the hands of men

The Wii controller is really damn comfortable too... I love being able to move my hands as I please.

Also for people saying their arms cramp when using it.. REST YOUR WRIST ON YOUR GODDAMN LAP.

[–]BluLite 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I disagree, because I like using it as an actual controller, which means holding it sideways. Right angles do not contour to the hands very well.

[–]Hinph 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Doesn't bother me much, but I grew up with a NES controller... and most games use both the nunchuk and Wiimote configuration, which is undeniably comfortable.

[–]DayTrippa 17 points18 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Seriously!? I love the N64 controller. It was so comfortable and natural. I really think it was the best controller I've ever used. Also, my hands don't hurt after using it like they would playing on the SNES.

[–]The_Grim_Reaper 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I have no idea why people complain about the N64 controller, its still my favorite controller today. The old "3 hands" joke is just moronic. What's so fucking difficult about moving your hand from one position to another? You rarely had to do it mid game and the middle handle gave a nice gun feel when playing FPS's. The hard analog was the only thing i could fault.

[–]Kaiburr 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think the joystick and the dpad should have switched because the dpad was rarely used (from my experience) and thus your hands were at different levels.

[–]Mo0man 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

N64 was the first system with an analog stick, and they had no idea how well it would end up doing, so they hedged their bet. They designed the controller before most (any?) of the games were made

[–]Kaiburr 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, I figured this was the reason. Conversely, I think N64 games should have utilized the D-pad more.

[–]Azrael_Ferrum -2 points-1 points ago

I'm pretty sure the Playstation came out first, or did you mean first Nintendo console?

[–]Mo0man 2 points3 points ago

The first playstation controller didn't have analog sticks

The first Sony controller with analog sticks came out much later: the Dual Analog Controller.

I'm sorry, I must have gotten it mixed up, as I only got a playstation in 1998.

[–]daelin 1 point2 points ago

The Playstation was considered something of a flop at first. The games sucked and there weren't many. It was the bastard offshoot a collaboration between Nintendo and Sony to produce a CD add-on for the SNES. The Playstation was kind of Sony's middle finger to Nintendo (and attempt to recoup costs) when their partnership fell apart after several years of development.

Turned out pretty well, though, didn't it?

[–]Clayfool9 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Pretty much my first thought upon seeing the 64 controller for the first time. If the GC controller only had a left 2nd shoulder button, it'd be the best ever IMO.

The GameCube and Xbox 360 controllers are my favorite controllers of all time. I used to love the playstation controller, but since it went wireless it's too light.

I love the N64 controller. It is the only controller that has truly fit comfortably in my giant hands.

[–]petedawes 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Same here. N64 like a glove. I hate PS1/2/3 because the handles on the controller are too damned short. I feel like I'm going to break the thing.

[–]MEaster 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I've also found that the Playstation pads have that uncomfortable ridge between the face and the handles.

Have you tried the Xbox 360 joypads? I've found that they're probably the best joypads I've used.

Speaking of which, we're missing the PS1 and its prototypes here. They were originally prototyped as the SNES CD controllers as a joint venture with Sony.

[–]inotocracy 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Ditto. For FPS, I felt the N64 controller was the best design. Never had any gripes with it other than the analog stick starting to get loose/sticky over time.

[–]robothelvete -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Then I guess you are one of us few who thought the original large xbox controller was much better than the teeny tiny version that came after?

[–]ChaosOnion 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I never had a problem with the original, larger X-box controller. I did find it to be bit heavy, wide and thick. It accommodated my hands, but not in the same way the N64 controller did. The N64 controller fit my hands because of the long "legs." It was lighter and the stick and buttons were closer together. I am not a size queen, I just like something that fits.

Eventually Nintendo will have to build the N64 2 with the same controller. How about on the 20 year anniversary of the N64. It will be a grandiose return to console-television gaming. It will be many times more powerful than the PS3. Many many N64 favorites will receive sequels. The Zelda game will be 18 times bigger than OOT. Link can sit in the forest and tell jokes in a picnic.

I used to babysit a kid that used the N64 controller upside down because he hated that it had 3 handles. I tried it one time to apease him but it was so ass backwards I couldn't do it. I'm not sure how he could beat me when the buttons were the opposite of what you wanted to do.

The N64 controller was born in a different era. It's design aimed to give game developers more control options. Thumbsticks were still a very, very new at the time, and not all 3D games needed analog control. The three-prong design was a compromise to allow either digital or analog control while keeping your thumb in a neutral, comfortable position.

Sony's design was arguably more complex and flexible, keeping both the d-pad and left analog stick within reach. However, Nintendo's design placed the analog stick in a more prominent position, and possibly helped promote analog control in the vast majority of N64 games.

There's no real reason to hate on either controller, especially when ergonomics are concerned.

I guess i'm the only one who loved the snes controller best. I remember seeing a drawing of what it was going to look like a year before it came out and being blown away. When I finally held it in my hand, it just felt...perfect. my hands are bigger now, but it will still always be my favorite.

the N64 controller is still my favorite controller of all consoles. It is made of so much win.

[–]daelin 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The N64 controller wasn't meant for you to be able to use all three prongs at once. It was designed to allow three different kinds of control styles for games.

  • DPAD + ANALOG; index finger trigggers (L-shoulder and Z)
  • DPAD + Buttons; index finger triggers (L-shoulder and R-shoulder)
  • ANALOG + Buttons; index finger triggers (Z and R-shoulder)

People made faces and almost no games used the DPAD + Analog config. Plus some people just didn't like holding a controller lopsided. (most games used the analog + button config) So the natural evolution was the Gamecube controller: balanced but a little more uncomfortable than the N64 controller.

[–]sqazm 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

For me, the best controller was the SNES controller. The buttons your thumb had to repeatedly hold down and press? Indentations so you could feel where they were at. The buttons you mashed with the base of your thumb? Raised that shit up like to make it easier for you.

Only awkward thing was playing games like SF2T, where you sort of half gripped the controller in the middle with your right hand and hit the L button with your right index finger.

I'm a big fan of the N64 controller. At the time I was a little overwhelmed with the number of buttons, but settling into the functionality was amazing. After getting used to it, the controller no longer seemed like a bunch of buttons, but became a conduit for actual game interaction.

The GC controller might be the greatest video game controller ever made, although the XBOX controller has slowly grown on me over time. Of course, anything beats a playstation controller of any variety. :D
