i don't call it the 5-second rule. i call it the "i have an immune system, and i'll be goddamned if i'm not gonna use it" rule.

In fact you're likely strengthening your immune system. It's like working out and eating at the same time!

More people should know where this came from. Do you have a link to the shirt or the derby. Im pretty sure it's not on the reckoning any more.

Damn right. Honestly, we're so germphobic that I believe we're screwing up our immune systems. We don't need to wash our hands 12 times a day. Kids need to play in the mud. I actually believe it's the reason for our high rates of autoimmune problems like asthma, food allergies, and hayfever. Our bodies need to be calibrated by attacking real threats.

[–]ballpein 12 points13 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I heard a piece on NPR a while back about allergies. Some dude in the states started suffering from debilitating allergies, tried everything his doctor offered without relief. He's researching on the internet one day and comes across a theory that a parasite called parasitic hookworm may cure allergies. It seems that this parasite disappeared in the west with the advent of public sanitation, but in parts of the world where they don't have sanitation the hookworm still thrives, and folks don't get allergies.

So he heads down to South America, visits a remote tribe and wallows in their latrine until he contracts hookworm... allergies cured. He now operates a ringworm farm* and mail-orders them.

*he "farms" them out of his feces.

[–]tuttlerecall 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That story is from the Parasites episode of RadioLab, an amazing episode of an incredible show.

[–]ballpein 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

correct on both counts!

[–]dietotaku 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

that would be crohn's disease you're referring to there, and yes, it's most easily treated by simply contracting hookworms. what is crazy is that western doctors either don't know this or willfully ignore it (because "ewww, hookworms!") and try to prescribe grueling expensive pharmaceutical therapies instead.

[–]hoseja 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'd say it's not "ewww, hookworms" but "woot, expensive drugs!".

[–]dietotaku 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

lol, true.

[–]Gareth321 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think I've read his story. His autoimmune problems were seriously debilitating. So he decided to contract hookworm. I mean, just the thought of the little buggers burrowing through my calf muscles is enough to rule that out, but good on him for having the balls to go through with it.

[–]dietotaku 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

you are completely correct. childhood is when it is most important for kids to be exposed to germs because the amount of antibodies they build up early on will determine how susceptible they are to disease later in life. at 30 years old, my eating a skittle off the floor probably isn't giving my immune system quite the same workout as if i were 5, simply because i've already been exposed to most of the germs i'm going to come across in a normal lifetime. kids who are sheltered from all that via antimicrobial soaps and whatnot are the ones who develop the autoimmune disorders later in life because their immune system was basically clubbed in the kneecaps from the get-go.

[–]voxoxo 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

There is indeed some theories that exposing newborns to unnaturally sterile environments can be a cause for allergies.

[–]gonzal61 1 point2 points ago

One can´t even go to Mexico and drink some tap water no more, fucking weak immune system

[–]CiXeL 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

i wonder how long it takes to adjust to drinking that tap water until you no longer respond negatively?

[–]ecaward 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

From my experience, it depends highly on where you are. I drank/bathed in tap water in Reynosa and I was fine. But I don't think you could convince me to do it in the D.F. or smaller towns. I've never had a bad tap water experience in border towns.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Is there any scientific basis for that? Probably not. I feel like people think they can just make shit up about the immune system.

It was 'reckoned' back in February meaning popular shirts replaced it on the Top lists. If you look at "the reckoning" (what they call the Top list) you can still see the Cookie Monster shirt still up from 9/11/2009 because people like it so much.

You can't buy it from woot anymore, but you can find it on shirt trading sites. Woot shirts are pretty popular. For example you can search "5 Second Rule" on teetrade for it

[–]LordSparkles 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

[–]TiltedTurbine 2 points3 points ago

I had a roommate who swore by the five second rule. One time I even saw him eat salmon that fell on the hardwood floor, but that was nothing compared to the time he dropped a peice of scrammbled egg on a floor mat covered in dog and cat hair, only to throw it back in the skillet.

[–]ChinamenChen 2 points3 points ago

both of you will probably get sick, because 5 seconds is really the upper limit. i dont know much poison you guys lay down, but after a few coats of floor poison i can't even bring myself to let my kids lick the floor for 5 seconds. my kids also sleep in barrels filled with sulfur.

[–]ed19 1 point2 points ago

I've noticed there is a relationship between a persons weight and the amount of seconds in the rule.

[–]zinklesmesh 1 point2 points ago

The five second rule is bullshit; as soon as the food touches the floor whatever bacteria was there will instantly be on the food. It should be more like the five hour rule, as in whatever will grow on the food during the five hours you let it sit on the floor will make you sick

My kids love soft pretzels, but a lot of times they'll, like, forget that they were eating one. The short attention span of a preschooler, I guess. Subsequently, I frequently come home from work to find partially eaten soft pretzels on the couch, coffee table, floors, etc.

I have eaten these partial pretzels before.

(desirability of food) / (object it touches) = (number of seconds it can touch said object)

[–]waffleninja 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

So let's say you were eating bacon (10). It is dropped in shit (10). So you can let is stay for up to a second and still eat it? I think you need an exponential somewhere in there bro.

(desirability of food) / [2 ^ (object it touches)] = (number of seconds it can touch said object)

That is a much better approximation, but it is still just an approximation.

I generally observe the 5 second rule when it's a hard surface. Any sort of damp? No way.

Common sense applies, even with the 5 second rule!

For something like a pretzel, it's probably safer to say that its good on the ground for well over 5 seconds. This is because pretzels are really salty, and bacteria can't survive on salts. Sorry if that's completely random and off point, I still get what the picture is trying to convey.

I know it since the myth busters tested it. It states that food dropped on the ground will not be contaminated with bacteria if it is picked up within 5 seconds of being dropped. Of course it's BS.

The 5 second rule is bull, that's why I have an infinity second rule, it doesn't matter how dirty it is, as long as your generally consistent.

Animals don't get ill because they eat anything their entire lives, just like we used to do before we discovered fire. The big nasties like CJD and HIV are what people should actually worry about.

There's actually research out that supports the 5 second rule. Exposure time does have an effect on contamination.

[–]croman653 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I know what the hivemind's general opinion of the Mythbusters is, but they busted it. And yes, they used controls. There was no difference between the amount of bacteria on food that had been on the ground for 2 or 6 seconds.

[–]Jonmad17 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

http://www.snopes.com/food/tainted/dropped.asp

Snopes says it's false, and I've heard similarly from other sources. Where's this research you speak of?

[–]silence7 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Voila. You really do get more bacteria by waiting longer. If there are bacteria which will make you sick, you'll get enough to make you sick in a few seconds though.

News coverage:

On surfaces that had been contaminated eight hours earlier, slices of bologna and bread left for five seconds took up from 150 to 8,000 bacteria. Left for a full minute, slices collected about 10 times more than that from the tile and carpet, though a lower number from the wood.

[–]kyara_no_kurayami 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes, it may get lots more bacteria the longer it is there, but it doesn't wait any amount of time before it starts accumulating.

[–]ElLechero 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on
