I think spoofs are a little more subtle now-a-days. You should watch 'The Other Guys' this is a perfect example. Outrageous but slightly more realistic than the classic spoofs. SLIGHTLY.

The Other Guys was a great movie. By far one of Will Ferrel's best.

Aim for the bushes.

They still exist, in the form of "not another (insert type) movie" titles, the comedy is still pretty much the same, but I hate to break it to you, we've grown up and national lampoon is pretty much defunct and the broken lizard boys dont do much anymore, also wierd al doesnt make movies anymore because he has a family and shit to do...the reason you still find this shit funny is a thing called nostalgia...new comedy that uses this same type of absurd humor is no longer funny because you have matured but held a place in your heart for shit you found funny....

For instance, I used to love robin hood men in tights, that movie was fucking classic, but if they tried to release that shit now, id fucking rag on it all day and night and tell dave chapelle hes a dick for even doing it...but I still like the movie because of...yeah you guessed it, nostalgia...

Im drunk...

[–]draebor[S] 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You're correct that nostalgia does play a major part in what I love about movies like this, and you're also correct that I deride most modern attempts within the genre. For example, I'm not a fan of Robin Hood: Men in Tights (or its contemporary film Hot Shots) despite being a big Mel Brooks fan, largely because it felt like a shoddy repackaging of the gags that made early Abrams-Zucker films so good (Airplane, Top Secret, Kentucky Fried Movie...). They were just slapstick bits without the wry wit and edgy humor of the originals. I put UHF in that 'original' category, too...

Sadly, few 'original' films are made these days because Hollywood is afraid to spend money on non-established properties. Thus we get "Final Destination 5" and "Rise of the Beginning of the Prequel of the Planet of the Apes".

EDIT: BITCHES BE SERIOUS

Also, try watching some old Troma movies, Toxic Avenger, Sgt. Kabuki Man NYPD, they are quite a bit more violent but I found them to be quite slapstickingly funny.

Try watching Idiocracy as well, it's not quite slapstick but it is incredibly funny and eerily relate-able.

Black Dynamite is a great spoof movie as well.

[–]BroadStreetElite 18 points19 points ago

You are kind of right, except Robin Hood Men In Tights was good because it was Mel Brooks, and everything that man did was great. I loved Young Frankenstein even if it was released 15 years before I was born, the Nostalgia factor doesn't really work there. The Scary Movie series started out ok, and gradually got worse not because it was 'new' but because the Wayans disappeared and so did the writing talent, and the jokes soon became nothing but ragging on pop culture and appealing to the lowest common denominator. Meet the Spartans was a little over an hour long and even that seemed to long.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes young frankenstien was released before you were born, but how old were you when you saw it...

you see nostalgia is what you viewed as a child, not what was released at that time...if we were kids now, those shitty movies they make would be gold, I know how I was and I wont deny that my young self would have thought they were funny as shit, but just not now...

Young Frankenstein, Blazing Saddles, Murder by Death. Are you trying to say that these movies are classics and hilarious at any age? I didn't see Murder by Death until a few months ago, I'm 21. And it's hilarious.

I first saw UHF in my mid twenties, and I still find it funnier than any of the Not Another .... Movie series.

[–]SicilianEggplant 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That may be true about the old slap-sticks being similar to the current generation of them, but..... I'll never admit that they are the same.

Maybe it is just us getting older, but just because they are in the same genre doesn't mean they are in the same league.

I dunno. Maybe they are closer than that. I'll just never admit it. I just can't think of a good reason other than my bias.

......

I mean... shit. Have you seen a Lampoon flick lately? I think the last thing I saw was some caveman movie (that one chick from Varsity Blues and original Final Destinations was in it, along with Ron Jeremy and Tom Arnold I think) on TV a year or two ago. I can't fathom how anyone who appreciates comedy, let alone movies in general, thinks that's some fantastically hilarious movie. It was just fucking painful.

I think that more people will be still be talking about Airplane! or Naked Gun than any "Scary..." or "Not Another..." movies in the future.

[–]freshmas 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

People have said the same about many popular things that are no longer popular.

[–]SicilianEggplant 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I know, and I don't want to sound like an aging dick about it (even though I guess I am one), but I suppose what I am trying to say is that even though these new silly comedy movies may be similar to the old ones, I personally don't see them as popular with the general public as in the past (but I obviously have no data to back that up).

[–]freshmas 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't know about you, but most people's general public is based on their circle of friends.

[–]SicilianEggplant 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well, I'm trying to go off of ratings, but it's not like I have any price figures for how much the movies made (nor really care enough to do so) so..... Yeah, I am pretty much talking out of my ass.

Also, none of my friends actually appreciate old Mel Brooks movies or ZAZ movies or whatever. Whenever a new "Not another..." movie comes out it's instantly a "SicilianEggplant movie" because they know it pisses me off ("You like those other stupid movies...").

Sometimes I hate my friends. :)

[–]phreeck 0 points1 point ago

How is dave chapelle a dick for a movie getting re-released he was in?

Now if you're talking about him getting involved in a remake or sequel then you should probably use the appropriate wording because "release" is utterly vague if not completely misleading.

[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I mean if they tried to make it as new, having never seen it, my taste in humor has changed...people need to stop fucking replying to this message, ive moved the fuck on, its been talked about with actual intelligent people...its wasn't misleading to people who arent total fucking morons...

[–]phreeck 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You probably shouldn't comment on something if you are going to get upset when people reply.

Nobody else even responded to your comment on if they "released" the movie again, they just bring up similar movies from the past or present.

[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Nobody commented on if they released the movie again because thats not what I was fucking talk about and it was clear to people who arent stupid...

[–]phreeck -1 points0 points ago

It wasn't your main point, but you brought it up.

[–][deleted] -3 points-2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No, you see I was talking about if they released it now...as new...and it never existed before...you fucking idiot...

I find it funny everyone else got this but you!

and I get pissed when people reply to the first post when there is obviously a whole convo underneath it that pertains to it, and yet you were to busy typing a stupid response to the first post to have fucking read it...

[–]phreeck -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think it's funny how you keep disregarding the fact that nobody else even mentioned it. Fuck the rest of the conversation, it doesn't even mention anything about what I asked.

So why don't you actually answer my original question instead of trying to insult me.

Now I will reiterate it since you don't seem to understand.

How is it that Dave Chapelle would be the dick? He wasn't even the star in the movie.

[–][deleted] -3 points-2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I said id call him a dick for doing the movie at this point...geeze man, get the fuck over yourself...

[–]phreeck -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I said id call him a dick for doing the movie at this point

No shit, the point of my question was WHY HIM he was barely a main character. It is my opinion that the main character (Robin Hood) or the Director (Mel Brooks) would be a more appropriate target for the title of dick.

It was just a simple question, I just wanted to know why you were targeting Dave. You decided to be an ass about it so I find it funny that you are telling me to get over myself when every reply of yours is insulting.

[–]Endyo 0 points1 point ago

I disagree that the glory of these past movies is the product of nostalgia. Modern movies of this nature flop because the humor is tired. It's the pop culture references we are bombarded by every day coupled with fart and shit jokes and references to things just no one gets.

But you look at old national lampoon movies like the Vacation series or Hot Shots and even old Mel Brooks movies and you see that they originated a lot of comedy and still make stories that were entertaining with actual actors that were good at their craft. Go watch some of the Scary Movie series or god forbid...Epic Movie and you'll see tons of nobodies or D-list celebrities making the same tired jokes you've seen all over the place for years and anything original is just some gross out horrible thing.

The fact is that these old comedies have had millions of fans both old and new while the only people that manage to see these new comedies of this type are either teenagers or the kind of people you see on facebook saying "OMG U GOT 2 C EPIC MVIE SO FUNNY LOLOLLOLMAO!!!111!!" and then forget about it a week later.

so robin hood men in tights was a terrible movie? uhf was a terrible movie? national lampoon made terrible movies in the 80s and early 90s?

Those were the movies I was talking about liking...

I never said I liked those "not another blah blah movie" bullshits, I used them as a point of refrence...fuckin retard...

do you understand what a point of reference is? do I need to type like im explaining this to a 5 year old, you seem to be pretty fucking stupid...

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

new comedy that uses this same type of absurd humor is no longer funny because you have matured but held a place in your heart for shit you found funny....

that might be true for you, but i mean no reason to tell everyone the only reason they like older parody movies is for nostalgia. I hated the Hot Shots movies for the longest time and I rewatched them again and thought they were hilarious.

History of the World pt 1 by Mel brooks is way before my time but its still one of the funniest movies ive ever seen. How can I be nostalgic for something i was never around to witness first hand?

edit: saw you admitted you were drunk and you're reasoning wasnt the best.

My guess is the reason those movies are shit today is cause the writing is shit. Shitty writing and the fact that they just keep making them and releasing them as fast as they can is killing the whole genre. Its not satire or parody anymore, its just a movie appealing to the most low brow humor. Theres maybe a few good jokes in an hour and a half movie and the rest of it is just stupid bullshit. Blazing Saddles, the rest of the Mel Brooks movies, Airplane, all the other older parody movies did absurd jokes, but they were hilarious because no one thought of them before.

Now you have Not Another type of movies or Scary Movie 6 and the best joke they have is just Carmen Electra making goofy faces with fart noises playing behind her for 30 seconds. Thats why they're shit, because those movies are made for money, not for comedy

What about Shaun of the Dead or Hot Fuzz? Harold and Kumar leans National Lampoon but it's still spoofy. Pineapple Express? Some people have a soft spot for Pooty Tang.
