Looking for an image subreddit with minimal rules? Check out /r/images

A place to share interesting photographs and pictures. Feel free to post your own, but please read the rules first (see below), and note that we are not a catch-all for general images (of screenshots, comics, etc.)

Spoiler code

Please mark spoilers like this:
[text here](/spoiler)

Hover over to read.

Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), weight loss photos, posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. Weight loss photos go in /r/loseit, DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

Ugh, this is the most heart breaking aspect of racism. I don't really care if you're some grownup asshole who thinks blacks and jews are the devil but indoctrinating innocent children into this lifestyle breaks my heart.

Seeing kids dressed up like that or flashing white power signs when they should be playing with Elmo saddens me to no end.

A few days ago there were some protests in downtown Orlando on abortion. I was driving past them and see a sign with a bloody baby corpse on it, who was holding it? This little kid was, couldn't have been older than 6-7 years and could barely hold this sign that was just about as big as him.

Was very hard not to say something to the older people holding signs at the other end of the block. Such a shame :(

Once there was someone who drove by and threw a drink at them accidentally hitting a little boy instead. If that wasn't a metaphor for how them dragging those kids down with them will hurt them, I don't know what is. She actually had the audacity to say "You see! What kind of person will hit a kid like that!" No lady, what kind of person are you to put these kids in harms way!

[–]radicaljane 179 points180 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I do NOT think children are "born racist." But I DO think people have strong tendencies to form in-group/out-group biases. We need to be aware of our tendencies in order to be educated about and not influenced by them. Parents don't teach their children about this enough, and children naturally notice intergroup differences. You can't just NOT teach racism, you have to actively teach tolerance/understanding of differences.

Fun fact: as a South Asian kid growing up in America who went to a preschool with white, black, and Chinese kids; I never realized race was an issue. It wasn't even until junior high that it occurred to me to think in terms of race because kids would use racial stereotypes to make jokes.

Lesson: don't raise your kids in homogeneous environments. Expose them to different ethnicities, religions, foods, etc. and make sure you don't treat it as not normal.

It could just be that people don't become dicks about in-groups and out groups until junior high and high-school.

Exclusion is a big part of puberty and ANYTHING that sets someone apart from the group can make them a target of ridicule. Race is just the most obvious thing, but I'm sure tons of former high school nerds here know what it is like to be in the out crowd. Nearly everyone has self esteem issues at that age and they love taking it out on others.

I was raised in a similar environment - international schools in a bunch of different places - and I totally agree with you, but the unfortunate truth is that practically speaking, parents aren't going to be able to easily expose their children to a multitude of cultures because it's expensive (well, either that or luck that your family happens to live in a culturally rich environment). Moving your family to a totally different country, or to a big & culturally diverse city, or enrolling your kids in an international school - it's all expensive.

[–]bee3 1 point2 points ago

I was exactly the same. I didn't even realise one of my best friends growing up was Asian until I was about 12. I mean, he has much darker skin than I have so I always knew we were different to each other in someway, I just never cared enough to give it a second thought.

Also she's blind. Color doesn't exist for her, yet she still had racist ideas. Chew on that.

[–]dianthe 1 point2 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes I agree, I don't think we are born to hate anyone based on their appearance but we certainly can be weary of someone who looks different to us. I grew up in Russia and when I was little I don't even remember seeing anyone but white people - I only saw people of other races on TV.

When I was 3 and we had a new girl in my kindergarden group - she was very fair with curly blonde hair, when I saw her I spent the whole day crying because I was scared of her since she looked so different to anyone else I knew. Then we became friends a few days later lol

But yeah I think it is perfectly natural for children to be aware or even scared of differences they see in the appearance of others at first, but that's when it becomes their parents' job to teach them how not to be prejudice.

[–]fatLOKO4 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

there has been a study about whether children are "born racist". even in infants, there has been a bias demonstrated. newborns do not favor their own race necessarily, but they do show a strong bias towards the race they encounter the most.

not true racism, but this shows that people are naturally uncomfortable with the unfamiliar

[–]inter10per 66 points67 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

There's more to it than that, though. I grew up with loving parents in an interracial (caucasian + asian) family and I never understood racism as a child. I had a few black friends here and there and could not possibly fathom how people could dislike them based on the color of their skin.

Then I went to college in West Philadelphia.

After about two years I realized I was starting to develop some racist tendencies. I did not learn these from anyone; I started developing them on my own. Basically, the color of someone's skin became a Pavlovian trigger for me, because they shared the skintone of the bums who harassed us for money, the guys who beat the fuck out of my friends, the guys who pistol whipped my buddy in an alley next to a gas station, the guys who tried to break into my apartment, the guys who tried to mug me in broad daylight on an empty street... and so on.

I got out of the city and I thankfully started to change back again. But the truth is racism is a complicated subject, and it's not quite as arbitrary as you or I would like to believe.

One day my grandfather and his head picker were returning from the fields with myself trying my best to keep up. I managed to catch up to the black picker, an old man who was walking slightly behind grandpa and grabbed his hand. he looked down at me and laughed saying "you want to be carefull son that will rub off on you". What i asked. The black he says. I stopped, looked at my hand dumbfounded. Then looked up and said "no it won't" took his hand and continued to the house.

I disagree. I had decided for myself as a three year old that I "didn't like brown people" and I told my dad so the first time I saw one. He explained to me that that was not right, and how that was a thing called prejudice. I learned not to treat people badly based on the colour of their skin. It's normal to have an aversion to things or people that are different or unfamiliar, and I think racism is natural to some degree. That doesn't mean I support it.

Our friends had their three year old girl with them and while playing on the playground, we noticed that several of the same aged japanese children were pointing to her and then holding their eyelids open and laughing.

Human nature is to shun/ridicule that which is different than yourself and your clan (no pun intended), maturity is required to overcome that.

My students would laugh and point at my pointy nose. So I would laugh, take my fingers, pull the corners of my eyes back, and contort my mouth to look like a buck tooth Oriental stereotype.

The students quieted down. Some began to shed a tear.

They got the point. They never laughed at my nose again.

You've got to be taught To hate and fear, You've got to be taught From year to year, It's got to be drummed In your dear little ear You've got to be carefully taught.

You've got to be taught to be afraid Of people whose eyes are oddly made, And people whose skin is a diff'rent shade, You've got to be carefully taught.

You've got to be taught before it's too late, Before you are six or seven or eight, To hate all the people your relatives hate, You've got to be carefully taught!

Racism stems out of fear of the unknown - something that we are ALL born with. It is one of the most basic instincts and occurs in the animal kingdom as much as in society. For instance when a male gorilla tries to join a pack from which he does not belong, those of that pack will often react violently. That is not to say that this reaction is acceptable in society, or that some don't overcome this basic instinct earlier than others. However, it is inevitably upbringing and education which either teaches us to overcome this prejudice, or embrace it.

When I was about 3 years old I was babysat one day by a black lady from our church. I remember being at their house, which was simply a house different from mine, with different sights, sounds and smells, and being a little uncomfortable. At the end of the day when my mom picked me up, apparently I told her, "I don't like brown faces." All it meant was that I was a little kid in an unfamiliar situation.

It's survival. If there was somebody radically different in appearance showing up it was probably as a member of a war band about to rape and pillage your village.

I thought about this other day. I was thinking about if someone broke into my house and I had to decide to shoot them or not, how much easier it would be to know in an INSTANT whether it was just a friend who got drunk and stopped by or someone coming to kill me if all my friends looked about the same. That is to say, if all my friends are white and it's a black guy in my house, I can safely assume that I'm not going to feel bad in a minute for shooting the intruder. Then I thought "what the fuck, that sounds so bad?" So I thought about it a bit, and I can totally see the evolutionary roots of racism.

[–]Haillo 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

While I agree with your statement, I'm not entirely sure that the fact we're born with a tendency to favor those who look like us is in itself racist. For example, I'm a white male who prefers white females; however, that does not mean I wouldn't date someone who was black or of another ethnicity. I just happen to have a natural tendency to drift towards women of my own color. I guess what I'm trying to say is favoring one's own "kind" isn't in itself racist. Racism is hate and I do not believe we are naturally born to hate. It is instilled in us by family, friends and society.

[–]zushiba 3 points4 points ago

Technically that's not so. Humans are giant pattern recognition machines. We are designed to categorize things. We see fat people they go into the fat person column, if they are black they go into the black column if they are white, white column and so on and so forth.

It is natural for a species to protect it's own and be aggressive towards something it perceives as different and in direct competition. Black and White is different enough to trigger that response so in a very real way, yes we are all born racist.

That doesn't have to manifest itself as hate however and with higher reasoning we overcome those baser instincts. Baser instincts are however elevated with a crowd mentality and so, get a lot of white hicks together and bam, racism.

We ARE born with a tribal instinct to protect our family unit and those around us and to attack unknown outsiders. This instinct gets projected into any kind of social group you might identify with whether it's based on race, social standing, geography, or anything else.

People will make enemies of an entire group of "unlike me" people and blame their problems on them and constantly demonize them. Even if they have never met a single person of that group. The Robbers Cave experiment was a pretty good example of this.

It's horrifying when it's done to a disadvantaged group, but even young, open-minded people probably do it against police or business suits due to particularly bastardly members of these groups making terrible headlines and provoking rage.

[–]spoiled_cream_pie 3 points4 points ago

No one is born a racist

As much as I respect the sentiment that we shouldn't be racist, this statement is factually incorrect. In actuality we are all born racist. Racial equality is an acquired value.

Here are some factual references which refute this platitude:

I think it's important to be aware of this fact as it highlights the need to take an active stance against racism.

[–]sutibun 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Actually, almost everybody is born racist. It is only if you are born with a genetic defect that confers an ability to not distinguish different colored people from your parents. Studies have shown that no matter how a child is raised, early on in life the child will be scared of anybody who is a different color skin than their parents.

awesome picture but it is beside the point.

racists are created by the evil or stupid ones amongst us, as well as the evil or stupid ones amongst them.

humans are as tribal as any organism, and when push comes to shove, you line up with those wearing the same uniform. the hard part is that the "smart" or "enlightened" uniform is WAY THE FUCK harder to spot than the skin color uniform.

ask reginald denny. the nicest guy you could ever meet was beat half to death by black people just playing the game. same thing could be said for all those lynchings the white folks used to have fun with.

being human is an excercise that exceeds our abilities. that's what makes it fun and that's what makes it tragic.

I remember the day after 9/11, it was some newspaper in India that showed two images, side by side. One with Americans and their kids waving flags and toy-guns and one with some protest in Lahore with kids waving some nondescript flag and toy guns. I had decided that very day, that I would never teach my child my belief system or my sense of patriotism, but there is no book of love anywhere. Every religion talks about love and in their texts there is death, destruction and penalty for masturbation.
