Looking for an image subreddit with minimal rules? Check out /r/images

A place to share interesting photographs and pictures. Feel free to post your own, but please read the rules first (see below), and note that we are not a catch-all for general images (of screenshots, comics, etc.)

Spoiler code

Please mark spoilers like this:
[text here](/spoiler)

Hover over to read.

Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), weight loss photos, posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. Weight loss photos go in /r/loseit, DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

According to Wikipedia, the engines on several different models of passenger planes have been known to randomly strip naked and let their junk flap in the wind. It is how they cope with having such a stressful job. I am the same way.

Former aircraft technician here in the air force. From looking at that, it appears the fasteners for that panel were not inspected correctly and drag is what took it off. Components under that panel are only on the outside of that engine, and should not be a problem, just increased drag. The real issue you need to worry about is, if that panel blew off by either faulty fasteners or by faulty preflight inspection, you probably don't want to know what else was overlooked.

Aerospace engineer chiming in: Not true at all!!

Clearly the cowling has come off in flight, as you can see the buckling of the structure holding the nacelle. We don't know the status of systems and fuel/cooling lines running through that section. In addition, and perhaps even more critically, the cowling could have struck the wing and/or tail section, damaging it.

This could in many cases cause a plane to crash.

If the cowling was lost on the runway, it would probably not be nice for a subsequent flight to encounter it during takeoff or landing.
I am not an aerospace engineer, but I have watched "Mayday" a few times.

[–]dogsurine 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Naturally we're not talking about load carrying structure, if that was the case then we would likely not be seeing this picture, but rather one of rubble on the ground.

Depending on what kind of aircraft this is, critical systems could be located in the leading edge of the wing. Pneumatic de-icing, wiring, and don't forget the O2 tanks located at the wing root in at least the 747 series.

There are many failure mechanisms in aeronautical design, that is why we strive to create redundancy. In most cases we achieve that, but when the fan cowling comes off during flight you DEFINITELY have to land and check for damage!!

The only thing crashing here is the airline's stock value. I'd be surprised if that could take a passenger plane down. They're not as fragile as we think - watch episode 2 of Band of Brothers. Those old planes were built out of wood and metal by the lowest bidder and they could take massive beatings before they finally got knocked out of the sky.

A/C maintenance here, just wanna clarify...

had the cowling never been there it wouldn't be as big a deal. The engine could still work, but like he said, we couldn't trust the condition of those exposed engine components.

The issue is the cowl was not fastened securely, and the entire section was forcefully ripped off mid flight. The cowling/shrapnel almost certainly would have gone back and damaged something else, but that is unclear. This looks like pure human error to me.

While at first glance I would have freaked right the hell out, this actually looks to be the best way this sort of thing could have played out.

[–]tmannian 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Another aerospace engineer chiming in:

Fuel lines/important electronics are not secured to the cowling. Aerodynamic properties will change a little, plane is in little danger though. There was, of course, the chance of the debris striking tail or flap (too inboard to be aileron, and from the picture, not likely flaps are extended). It could also bounce off the wing itself, but its very unlikely to have picked up enough energy by the time it passes the wing surface (also, most likely is it would only impact the leading edge, if any of the wing).

The engine failing isn't that big of a concern, even if they all failed it would just mean that the pilot would need to make an early landing. However, the cowling hitting the tail could cause some major issues, depending on what was hit.

[–]Athiostitarian 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Pilot chiming in, got some maintenance done on my C172 (had to have carburetor heat replaced) during my next pre-flight, saw that the maintenance guys forgot to put in 7 cowling screws that hold the two parts of the engine cover together. If the cowling came off, it could've damaged the windscreen or flew up and struck the horizontal stabilizer. Later on, found out that the guy before me (co-owned plane) had flown the plane with the cowling screws missing. TL;DR never trust maintenance

no means enough to make a plane crash...

Pilot here: Unless it rips off the elevator as it flies back, disabling pitch control. Loss of pitch control is, generally, a bad thing for planes. Damage to the vertical stabilizer, equally unpleasant. Little things tend to bring down big airplanes, as evidenced by most NTSB reports involving mechanical failure.

The odds of it happening might be small but, when things go wrong, they tend to go wrong in a loud, noisy and hellish way.

[–]Hubso 8 points9 points ago

Yeah, but it suggests that little care has been taken with the upkeep of the plane, inferring that a similar lack of care has been applied to other, more critical areas of the plane.

Yep, better try to push this to the top, it's just an engine cowling, chill out..

[–]PopeSnowball 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I used to think a cowl was just a head cover, but apparently cowling also refers to an engine cover... TIL.

[–]DaHozer 3 points4 points ago

It's not a big deal, that covering is only on for improved aerodynamics.

Best example, sport bikes have loads of extra bits to help them cut through the air, but you can take those off and it still works (or in the case of Ducati, you can sell them like that at a premium)

[–]rib-bit 4 points5 points ago

It looks a lot worse than it is -- it's really the cover that's flown off and no damage to the engine itself or the plane's ability to fly.

[–]viciousbreed 1 point2 points ago

It's only scary in that it makes me wonder what ELSE wasn't attached correctly.

HAHA just the nacelle panel fell off, as long as the three engine mounts are still attached to the pylons the photographer will probably live through this experience and get to see their karma go up. Cool picture

My first ever flight was cross country from D.C. to Seattle. Two days before that I had finished Michael Crichton's "Airframe". It was six hours of pure terror as I had a window seat on the wing and was just waiting for that bitch to fall apart. I was expecting my plane to look like this all day.

I've seen a few fighter come back missing a piece or two but never an entire engine cover. Probably few alright, maybe pulled to the left a tad with all the extra drag.

[–]me-tan 1 point2 points ago

In Israel they once had a fighter come back with something slightly larger missing...
