Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

As seen on the USS Rube Goldberg.

Just FYI, the break halfway through where the piston shifts the shell and powder pack sideways is there so that if the gun goes off improperly or the gun takes a direct hit, the explosion won't propagate all the way down and blow up the entire ammo and powder store. This is a pretty old design.

[–]looksfamiliar 12 points13 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It also speeds up the operation, since the first casing can be refilled before the other is returned

[–]whoami9 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Good point. It's actually shown in the gif too.

[–]quaste 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Also keep in mind that the gun can turn and the upper elevator probably will have to move along, while the other one is stationary. I guess when the piston shifts the shell and powder pack sideways, it also takes care of realigning it with the direction of the gun.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

You're wrong. It's because the gun is in a turret.

You can tell it's British because the Americans stored and loaded the shells vertically from a rotating projectile flat using parbuckling gear instead of a mechanical hoist.

As someone who had the unfortunate task to load many a US Navy 5"/54 gun. I was going to say the same thing; in a far less confusing manner. Something like "We load our guns a little differently; at least on Cruisers."

Mobile Bay (CG-53) 2001-2005. I'm still a contractor though so I've ridden about a dozen or so different ones; mostly DDG's.

[–]havespacesuit 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Did they allow you to wear hearing protection? I was talking to a retired Navy man on a gunboat in Norfolk, VA who said that they did not wear any hearing protection at all, and he was half deaf

[–]falor42 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Hearing protection galore. In fact; hearing protection INSIDE of hearing protection (plugs and sound cancelling headphones (or w/e they were called)). Don't let that fool you though; those things are freaking loud.

I was on a DDG last year smoking midships when their main gun started firing (I forgot they were firing that morning:/) It is ridiculously loud without the hearing protection and feels like a giant hand punching your whole body from the shock-wave (a gentle punch). There would be no way someone could regularly take that, you would be deaf super quick.

[–]havespacesuit 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

:O

Well the old boy I was talking to was half reminiscing and half lecturing me about using my earbuds because they would make me go deaf. Maybe he was pulling my chain with his story, I dunno.

I know what you mean about the punch though. Some ... friends of mine get illegal fireworks every year, the kind that are shot off at legitimate fireworks displays? They are mortors, big balls that you put in a tube, light the fuse, and they shoot up in the air. Anyway, some of them are the big light/noise kind, and they make the windows of my place "thump" inwards and you can feel it in your bones.

[–]falor42 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I know the fireworks you're talking about, they got nothing on the guns, it is ridiculous. I just wish I was around to see a Battleship broadside, but alas they were all decommissioned by 2000.

You want really loud though; try the missiles.

So why not just store the ammo closer to the gun? There seems to be quite a gap in waiting for the main elevator to come back from the shell room. Or even a second elevator would be able to feed the gun faster.

[–]Snow88 57 points58 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's nice to store explosives away from where explosions are happening.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

True.

[–]brilliantNumberOne 11 points12 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Because a couple of primed shells (and, depending upon whom you believe, a deranged sailor) can do this. Imagine the entire magazine.

[–]FootballBat 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Two reasons: first, as mentioned before, it is wise to keep the exploding stuff away from the controlled explosion in the gun. It's bad enough if the breech fails; it would be mch worse if there was additional exploding stuff around the failed breech. Secondly, the magazine where reloads are stored is heavily armored. Any additional penetration to the magazine would cause additional stress on the armor, as well as providing an alternate path for an explosion.

[–]Athegon 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's probably somewhat limited on rate of fire due to temperature. it the weapon gets hot enough, you risk having it "cook off" where the ammo gets hot enough due to heat from the chamber that the gunpowder autoignites.

When you have small arms (ie, a rifle) cook off, it's bad. When you have a 16-inch deck gun cook off, that's real bad.

This reminds of Episode 3 from Lost Planet 2. They tried to make the railway gun in the game as close to the Schwerer Gustav as possible.

It seems to be inspired by the German railway guns from World War II, Schwerer Gustav and Dora, each 800mm and capable of launching a 7 ton shell 23 miles. They were the largest artillery pieces ever created and when used, unleashed monstrous amounts of power on whatever poor object lay in its sights. It has been recreated with as much dark being and ferocity as it was the day it was originally built.

This all leads up to one of the most bad ass scenes I have ever seen in a game.

I believe I read somewhere that the diameter of the shells had to increase as the power of the shells were ever slowly expanding the diameter of the barrel. Eventually, after firing so many times the barrel would have to be replaced.

small known fact. If you stick your finger in the end of the barrel you can cause it to backfire!

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That seems pretty inefficient. There is quite a gap where the gun is doing nothing and waiting on ammunition. Having two elevator-thingies from the ammo room to whatever that transfer point is should alleviate that, because the second elevator spends a second or so waiting on the first one to come back up from the ammo hold. Or maybe you could just not store the ammo so far away from the gun.

[–]bedhed 18 points19 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Guns are thermally limited: fire too quickly, and the barrel will degrade/melt.

Also, it's necessary for a ship to correct it's aim by where the shells are actually landing. Optimizing for a faster cycle time wouldn't really buy you anything, as you'd be waiting for the shells to impact.

[–]pbrand 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It gives enough time for new coordinates to be forwarded to the gun to hit a moving target.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

But isn't that done electronically? Or I guess this could be an older ship.

[–]inqrorken 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

In addition to bedhed's points, it's very important to keep the shells and propellant separate, and safe. If an enemy exposive reaches either the shell hold or the powder hold, the entire thing can blow up in a catastrophic explosion. Worse, fire can spread from the turrets, along a line of waiting power or shells, and reach the holds, causing the same explosion.

Look up the losses of HMS Hood or HMS Queen Mary. Scary shit.

Cool! I've watched a lot of WW2 documentaries and have always wondered what the procedure was. So, I take it shells don't explode and aren't stored in the magazine? Are there any exploding shells? Are torpedoes and other munitions stored in magazines as well?

[–]Stereo_Panic 2 points3 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The shells are just giant bullets. When they impact all the energy that was propelling the shell just blows everything, including the shell, into smithereens. I don't think there are any exploding shells for that size gun. Shells don't really need to carry an explosive charge to be effective. The kinetic energy is more than enough.

Turns out I didn't know what I thought I did. Based on a couple replies and some research I found out that guns that size use either an Armor Piercing (AP) shell that explodes after penetrating or a High Explosive (HE) shell for bombardment. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/16-50_Mark_7

Munitions are always stored in magazines. Magazine means storehouse.

The guns on the US Iowa-class battleships of WWII, obsolete before they were even launched:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/16_inch_\(406_mm\)/50_caliber_Mark_7_naval_gun

They could fire a 20 kiloton tactical nuclear weapon, the W23. More about it.

[–]bedhed 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That's a pretty bold statement for a class of ships (and guns) that were in service for nearly 50 years.

[–]wolf550e 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They were built for battleship-to-battleship combat, but battleships didn't fight battleships in WWII. The range of the guns is puny compared to the range of aircraft launched from carriers. Aircraft sunk the Japanese navy, not USN guns.

Since then, the ships have been used for power projection (though of course the actual capabilities of the navy were in the carriers, guided missile destroyers and nuclear submarines) and shelling stuff before the marines land there, which is BTW ineffective against a dug-in enemy because shells are unguided. This was known since the island hopping campaign in WWII.

Since the Soviets had anti-ship missiles that hunt in packs and are hard to detect and destroy, carrier battle groups became obsolete as well. But not only are they still in service, the US is building new carriers! Because the USN is not about fighting an advanced adversary like the USSR, Russia, China, etc. Against those, all surface ships are dead meat: they can't hide from satellites and they can't defend themselves from salvos of supersonic missiles (no one has ever demonstrated an effective countermeasure to modern missiles, only to old ones like Exocet and Harpoon).

She has the distinction of being the only American battleship to sink an enemy battleship during World War II in a "one on one" surface engagement.

The exception that proves the rule.

[–]bedhed 2 points3 points ago

I can't really say that I agree with your analysis.

The vast majority of Japanese ships were sunk by submarines, not aircraft.

Shells from a naval cannon were unguided, but guided munitions were not deployed in significant quantities for another 25 years. During WWII, naval gunfire was the most effective bombardment method known. (Which isn't to say it's effective, merely that it was certainly not obsolete.)

The problem with calling a carrier battle group obsolete is that it's a group. The ability to intercept a missile in flight is one aspect of missile defense: preventing an enemy from getting close enough to launch a missile, confusing a missile with ECM and/or alternate targets, and mitigating the damage from a missile strike are also key aspects of missile defense.

I really wish many more generations of weapon systems will be retired without ever being tested in battle.

The vast majority of Japanese ships were sunk by submarines, not aircraft.

That may be a fair statement concerning merchant ships, though I'd like to see the numbers.

I very much doubt that was the case for IJN warships.

Is that powder they are packing? Pretty neat didn't even know they still used powder, for some reason thought the shells were like bullets. Also, do we even need the big guns anymore? Only way i can see a use is cost effective shelling of coast? Am I wrong here, or are they still a major part of a sea battle plan?

[–]kamishizuka 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's probably safer to store the shells separate from the propellant, not to mention you can then adjust how much boom you give to the shot to change the distance it travels.

Pretty cool. Do you or anyone else happen to have a video or link that explains the calculations and things that have to happen to aim? I imagine that shooting from a ship moving at battle-speed, that is rolling and pitching in the sea, aiming to hit another moving ship, is a bit involved
