Scientists don't generally expect different results. However they often hope for them, since it leads to far more interesting things.

I'm only 21 myself, but my teacher in grade 11 dropped elemental sodium into a bucket of water (behind a blast screen, of course, or we'd probably all be dead).

[–]Madprofeser 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It depends on your teacher. I was in high school just a few years ago and we would blow shit up all the time. I would walk into one of their class rooms during lunch (Pre-Ap Chem and AP Chem teachers I had where 3 sets apart and connected class rooms) grab some chemicals and go make some Thermite. In class we would light our hands on fire (not joking). Some of the funnest classes I've ever had.

Flour dust is comparable to sugar dust in its ability to flame up like that.

Well hot damn.

My dad works at a gas utility dispatching emergency response teams and he had to send guys out to an explosion at a bakery. The firemen that arrived with the gas technicians ended up concluding that it was a flour fire, but I really didn't understand what that entailed until now.

On the plus side the baker only lost his eyebrows and a bit of hair.

and you can sprinkle it on your lighter at the coffee shop, or even fill a coffee stirrer with creamer and light the end of it on fire and BLOW. Takes a bit of practice but it's fun times when you and your buds stumble out of the 7-11 and you proceed to put on a light show in the car.

[–]Stormhammer 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It in of itself really isn't kind of. I forget what it's all called but it has to deal with the suspended particles in the air etc - hence why sugar factories blow up.

[–]bakcw0rds 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

correct, its also why grain silos can explode. the grain dust mixed with air becomes extremely flammable. they have to take precautions to prevent the conveyor belts from making too much dust or getting hot from friction

[–]kilo4fun 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You can use it as jet or rocket fuel. Also sugar, sawdust, and powdered aluminum. Pretty much anything that is exothermic when oxidized can be used as fuel if it's liquid, gas, or particulate solid.

[–]lukeatron 1 point2 points ago

Those little packets of non-dairy coffee creamer can make some awesome fireballs. The crystallized sugar abrades tiny little flecks of aluminum off the inside of the packet. Yay for surface area.

[–]so_this_is_me 89 points90 points ago

It IS faked.

The behind the scenes is all part of the tricking you in to thinking they actually did it.

They didn't and it's horrendously obvious in the slow motion shots.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It looks like he was pulled backwards with a rope attached to a harness over his upper back ... Hollywood style. The gun is crotch level, not torso level.

Also the other scientists lab coats don't even flutter. You would think there was at-least a little back draft in an enclosed environment like that.

[–]Plutor 24 points25 points ago

AGREE, he looks like he got hid by a missile; furthermore, if this guy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9j55UrsfB6g) can take a cannon ball at point blank and only be thrown a few feet a then how does Styrofoam launch a man with as much force as a train. Me thinks he was in on it and he jumped backwards as hard as he could. i rest my case

[–]PlNG 1 point2 points ago

Yes, this sold me more than the door jump, which could've been a genuine reaction to the force impeded by a doorstop.

[–]maxunderkill 8 points9 points ago

...the door has a pneumatic closure which locks open when the door is pushed open far enough...

[–]redlightnetherlands 2 points3 points ago

lock maybe. But the door would visibly reverberate. It remains almost completely stationary. This is just going by the GIF though because I cant see the youtube one here.

[–]krangksh 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The youtube version looks the same, the door stops on a dime. I was thinking that there might be a lock as well but really, thats one hell of a lock to stop that much force dead and you'd think they'd put that money in to something other than holding the door open...

I was on the fence about whether the clip is real or not until I watched the door.

[–]scotchlover 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

In the slow mo version which is after it looks like the door is pushed open by the force, not a cut video.

[–]MendelssohnSansHats 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That's due to the lower frame rate of the gif. If you watch the video, the door's movement isn't quite so sudden when it bursts open.

[–]liontigerbearshark 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It does not bounce or anything, everything else is jarred though.

[–]boomfarmer 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The door has a spring-arm attached to if. If pushed with sufficient force, those will lock open.

[–]boomfarmer 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Watch the slowmo and you can see that the door does get pushed by the wind, like the shelves.

[–]liontigerbearshark 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Watch the slowmo and you can see the scientist "lag" to the left. He must have had a lousy connection.

[–]boomfarmer 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I see no lag. Please explain.

[–]liontigerbearshark 1 point2 points ago

[–]boomfarmer 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No, honestly, I don't see what you're seeing. Maybe it's because I don't play many multiplayer games that aren't blatant with the lag (Minecraft), but I don't know what movement you are describing with the term 'lag'.

[–]liontigerbearshark 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

He jumps left. At this point I am pretty sure you are trolling.

[–]o0DrWurm0o 23 points24 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's obviously fake because, no matter what that cannon shot, the impact on the scientist would have caused serious internal injuries as evident by how quickly and far he was hurled back.

[–]hansn 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Exactly, and internal bleeding is hi-larious.

[–]DarqWolff 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Unless the blowback was a combination of him trying to jump back away from the cannon + the air pressure kicking in and aiding him.

[–]boomfarmer 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

[–]dick_move 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Honestly, I think it is probably fake because it doesn't look safe and I think a scientist wouldn't have done it unless they were sure it was safe. But your speeding train analogy was not accurate and was very poor evidence to support your "I don't think anybody could survive that blast" claim.

[–]rugtoad 4 points5 points ago

Have you actually watched the slo-mo replay?

The "making of" video where they show the set-up and how the gun basically blows a little air is itself is true, only they then digitally edit the guy into flying. It's horrendously obvious in the replay.

They cut out him as a person falling back, add a shit tonne of motion blur and then just move the image back. They then have the guy jump up and fall forward as though he was rebounding off of the wall (which would have seriously hurt him if it was real).

Note the size difference in the slow motion fake flying guy and the real shot of him falling down.

Also there is next to no recoil on the "cannon" because it's only firing enough air to push some paper / cloth, not enough to rocket a guy into a wall.

[–]wilc8650 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No, it's fake. You can also see the light through the window suddenly change at the instant he starts to fly backwards in the background in the 720p version because they videoed the first part and videoed the reaction later.

[–]rahl404 2 points3 points ago

Are you at least vaguely familiar with Newton's third law of motion?

The shorthand is ubiquitous: For every action, there is an equal but opposite reaction.

Watch the muzzle of this particular cannon when it fires. In order to expend the amount of energy to launch an adult male off of his feet with this amount of force, there would be some sort of kick back on the device, unless it were mounted in a block of cement or something.

What you're seeing in that video essentially violates the laws of physics. It isn't real.

bolted to the floor?

I'd be impressed if they managed to rig something up, bolted to the floor, in such a manner that it didn't move even a little bit upon generating that sort of fire power.

Further, being that these men appear to be men of science, I don't think they would do such a thing, as they would know that whatever rig they have it on would have to be solid in order to withstand that sort of force. They no-doubt tested this thing over and over again, and they'd have to be foolishly carefree or masters of engineering to set up a rock-solid rig like that.

Typically, they would set it up in such a way to absorb the force, not resist it. So it would noticeably move a bit in an engineered manner. Setting it up to not move at all would be risky and irresponsible unless it were, as I said, part of a giant concrete caste that couldn't be moved without a forklift.

Watch the slow-mo. The door moves a bit as the gun is fired, and then is slammed open.

My boss showed me a pretty awesome trick the other day. Apparently when he was a post-doc (is my PI now), he and his buddies would take turns putting little chunks of dry ice into eppendorf tubes and would slip them anonymously into people's pockets. The result is a very loud bang, scaring the ever-living-fuck out of the unlucky person. So last friday we made several of these, threw them into a trash can, and waited. Hilarity ensued.

It is fake, so no worries. The device they used is real, but the video is absolutely faked; like you said, it would have caused serious physical harm, not to mention completely break the laws of physics.
