Looking for an image subreddit with minimal rules? Check out /r/images

A place to share interesting photographs and pictures. Feel free to post your own, but please read the rules first (see below), and note that we are not a catch-all for general images (of screenshots, comics, etc.)

Spoiler code

Please mark spoilers like this:

Hover over to read.

Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

The process which is responsible for their formation is a gravity wave. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gravity_waves

The actual clouds gravity waves form are called undular bores. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Undular_bore

The picture is of a morning glory which is the specific (local) name given to the undular bores that occur with relative frequency in the Burketown area of Northern Australia.

We know what causes gravity waves and undular bores. We don't know why Burketown Australia is so special that they occur so frequently.

Also, this type of formation isn't uncommon in the California Central Valley, though they aren't as pronounced and are usually at higher altitudes.

Basically, you have a long, straight coastline, then a long consistent mountain range, then a long, straight valley, creating a pressure wave as wind blows in from the ocean. As the winds ripple over the mountains they create a permanent set of ripples and similar clouds form at about 15,000 feet or so. (that's up high) I've seen as many as four cloud-lines North-West to South-East in the sky in parallel.

Most people don't notice. As a pilot, I do.

Those sound like lee waves: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lee_waves and if conditions are right can be spectacular looking. The difference between lee waves and the undular bore (like the morning glory) are that lee waves are stationary/standing waves, while the undular bore propagates. In the case of the morning glory, it propagates inland. And also, as you mentioned, lee waves are usually much higher in altitude.

I saw one at night in Normanton which is about 150 km NE of Burketown. It was incredible and reminded me of a "magnadoodle" because it was a long roll of cloud that seemed to clear the sky that followed it. I didn't know what it was then but was very impressed.

  1. Pretty sure it's actually sinusoidal air currents bro causing the clouds to compress in the troughs of the air waves .

gravity waves haven't even been proven yet.

edit: btw that gravity waves is complete bullshit btw... you wouldn't detect them like that. Looks like someone has been fuckign with wikipedia. They don't move across the earth the propogate outwards from it.

[–]timmeh87 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

He means the other kind of gravity wave. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gravity_waves

ooooh the OTHER kind.... right...

[–]timmeh87 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Clearly someone cant be bothered to click the wiki link

[–]laminak 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Sinusoidal air currents is actually a pretty good guess. But that is a phenomenon called cloud streets or horizontal convective rolls. These don't propagate outward like gravity waves do. They are stationary and are aligned parallel to the mean wind. The cloud lines are also not near as pretty or smooth as a well developed undular bore.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horizontal_convective_rolls

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

the term gravity waves used here is completely out of context

[–]Khafji 67 points68 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I get angry every time someone says something like "no one is sure" or "scientists are baffled", because every damn time those phrases are used the phenomenon in question has a solid mechanistic theory developed for it already. Do some damn research.

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Explain it to me like I'm 5.

[–]ClassicDragon 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The way I understand it (I have no idea if it's accurate) is like that experiment you do in school where you put oil and water together in a bottle so you can see how the separate. If you jiggle the bottle you can see little waves on the separation line. Since air is in separate layers due to different temperatures, the gravity waves can sometimes form on their boundaries if the conditions are just right. The clouds are a result of two different temperature air masses coming together.

I think...

WAKE UP, SHEEPLE! IT'S THE GOVERNMENT SPRAYING US WITH CHEMTRAILS TO KEEP US FROM RISING UP AGAINST THEM AND TO COUNTERACT GLOBAL WARMING AND ALSO TEST NEW CHEMICAL WEAPONS ON US. JUST WAIT UNTIL DECEMBER 25 OF NEXT YEAR AND YOUR EYES WILL BE OPENED!

[–]sibane 1 point2 points ago

I CAN'T BELIEVE NO ONE LISTENS US EVEN THOUGH WE WRITE ONLY IN CAPS. THEY WILL LEARN WHEN ILLUMINATI, BILDERBERG, CIA, RUSSIANS, JEWS, MUSLIMS, BUSH FAMILY, ROTHCHILDS, ROCKERFELLERS, OBAMA, REPTILIANS, RUPERT MURDOCH AND LADY GAGA TAKE OVER THE WORLD AND CREATE THE NEW WORLD ORDER! THE NWO IS NIGH! THEY WILL KILL EVERY PERSON ON EARTH WITH CARBOHYDRATES, CHEMTRAILS, FOOD ADDITIVES, HAARP AND WAR! THEN THEY SECRETLY IMPLANT MIND CONTROLLING MACHINES IN OUR BRAINS AND WE CAN SAY GOODBYE TO FREEDOM. DID YOU KNOW THAT MONEY DOESN'T ACTUALLY EXIST? THAT'S RIGHT! WE'VE BEEN SCAMMED INTO THINKING THAT IT EXISTS, SO THAT WE WOULD DO THEIR BIDDING AND WORK LIKE SLAVES FOR THEM.

WAKE UP SHEEPLE! I CAN'T BELIEVE YOU SHEEPLE CAN BE SO GULLIBLE!

...

But seriously... Wouldn't it actually be really easy for a government or any institution to conspire against people, when most people automatically think conspiracy theories are so ridiculous? Only people we believe to be evil in this world are those, whom we see in TV.

I was taught this by my paragliding instructor. Air moves over a mountain range. As it comes over the top, it descends with the ground, then it comes back up and then oscillates for a while. The low parts of the oscillations create an area of lower pressure allowing clouds to form.

I'm too drunk to remember the term for it. I'm sure 15 people will correct me with the right term.

My guess: gravity waves. At the top or bottom of the wave the conditions are right for water vapor to condense.

Don't gravity waves require some kind of destabilizing force, like a hill or moutain ot start the process? Not snark, I'm actually curious.
