sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

So, Ive seen and loved Cowboy beebop, Samurai Champloo, Bleach and Deathnote.

Would Brotherhood be anything for me?

[–]Thorus 16 points17 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

FMA: Brotherhood is much better. You should start with FMA:B and later watch original.

[–]linkj6 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Out of the two versions, I prefer Brotherhood. The story wasn't as solid in the first (at least to me it wasn't). It was also released and finished before the manga was done so that might have had something to do with it. Brotherhood was amazing. It gets to a point where something incredible happens and I don't think it can possibly get any better, but the next episode somehow tops it. That trend continues for a while.

Both have fantastic music so it's really a win-win.

[–]shawncplus 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Brotherhood went with the manga, the original went on its own. If you want the "real" story watch Brotherhood

[–]maniek1188 12 points13 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You have 2 versions to choose from: FMA and FMA: Brotherhood. I personally liked FMA better than Brotherhood. Still Wolf's Rain FTW. Since we are on the topc - when the hell will be next episode of Hellsing Ultimate?

[–]Nurkas 21 points22 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'd say go with Brotherhood, I found it much more entertaining, and the hohenheim plot was a bit more believable (yes, this is an important part, but telling you why would be major spoilers).

[–]boomfarmer 11 points12 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Plus, it kept to the plot of the manga.

[–]thepowerisyours 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Plus, I wasn't pissed off at an ultra depressing ending.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

And the horribly timed comedic face faults of the manga as well. FMA was very toned down in that respect.

[–]Calber4 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I haven't seen all of Brotherhood but I preferred FMA. I feel like a big part of the story is moral ambiguity, how nobody is really good or evil. FMA really emphasizes the moral ambiguity factor (particularly with Scar and Mustang), which is lost due to the plot differences in Brotherhood.

[–]Nurkas 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Haha, not to mention just where all the energy for alchemy is coming from.

Even in brotherhood you do get the ambiguity with Scar by the end of the series, but yeah it makes Mustang 100% good in it, which I actually liked.

[–]Rubin0 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The former has one of the most disappointing endings I've ever seen. Brotherhood was far more reasonable.

[–]Nurkas 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You have clearly never watched death note then XD

[–]Thorus 0 points1 point ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

For me, Death Note ended with 26th episode... SPOILER With "L's" death and new killing rampage of Kiru.

[–]Rubin0 -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I love the ending of Death Note. Unfortunately, almost the entire second season is Grade A bullcrap

[–]Nurkas 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I agree with the second season being bad, but the ending was just plain worse. You can't build up an entire world like that and remove the centerpiece of it and then proceed to completely leave you in the dark about what happens next.

EDIT: Not to mention the fact that up to that point Near was rather lackluster and then all of a sudden he became smarter than L, what the heck happened there?

[–]eigen 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I thought FMA was OK until they introduced that old lady at around episode 27. As a standalone anime it was all right but it paled in comparison to the manga storyline.

[–]OMLE 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Wolf's Rain is by far the best Anime series I've ever seen.

My preference was for Brotherhood, It has been a long time since I've watched any Anime and until that came out I thought I'd grown out of it :p

[–]PSBlake 1 point2 points ago

Just as a matter of personal preference, it's not really an either-or thing. Both FMA and FMA: Brotherhood are excellent shows, and should just be viewed as separate continuities.

[–]Waqqy 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Wolf's Rain yes! I've tried telling people how good it is but they refuse to watch it since it's not famous.

[–]lunacraz 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

crap, i didn't even realize they released the second set... totally got out of anime (no real reason, just stopped watching).

Hellsing was one of the best animes (the 13 episode one), and I read a lot of the books b/c of it. When the OVA came out I was really excited, but it sounds like they're still taking their damned sweet time with it

[–]Sleepy_One 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Brotherhood is great. FMA is a little different than those animes listed (based purely on the setting), but I think you'd probably enjoy it.

[–]carninuz1 2 points3 points ago

hard to tell, but i like brotherhood and cowboy bepop, deathnote, and bleach season 1

[–]en_alm 1 point2 points ago

Feels like I need to check it out then, now that it seems like we have similar taste.

[–]Seani 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Brotherhood is definitely the better of the two. Besides it's almost identical to the manga which imo is quite an important factor when watching animes.

[–]CrummyBunny 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think it is still interesting to watch both though. I feel like the first half was done better in FMA, but then the second half was better in Brotherhood. Overall I found the plot of Brotherhood to be more interesting though.

[–]StrangeGibberish 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

that's about right. I think Brotherhood intentionally glossed over stories that had already been animated.

[–]jntwn 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Brotherhood follows the comics, I enjoyed it much more than the original.

[–]thepowerisyours 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Brotherhood was far superior because it followed the path of the manga, and the story made sense. the original FMA stopped around episode 20, and shit got stupid. Also, the ending was sad as fuck.

edit- stopped following the manga at episode 20. that's what i meant.

[–]mista0sparkle 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

FMA Brotherhood is amazing, one of my favorite anime series along with Cowboy Beebop for sure. FMA the original was more intended for a younger audience so stick to Brotherhood.

[–]archontruth 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Brotherhood is, IMHO, better than any of those. It has an honored place in my collection.

[–]KousKous 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'd recommend you try Soul Eater and D. Gray Man.

As for Cowboy Bebop, try out just about anything from this list, especially Nadesico, Overman King Gainer and (if you have the time) Legend of the Galactic Heroes.

[–]TenerenceLove 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Do not watch Brotherhood before the original, in my opinion.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I've seen the same animes you have and judging by your preference I would say that you would really like Brotherhood. I like Brotherhood more than the original because of how the plot moves along. Everything comes together very nicely.

[–]millennia20 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah seriously. I watched the first one and right when it breaks off from the Manga you really felt like they were trying to paste things together to make a story as opposed to just letting it flow.

And agreed about the flow part. The first one I was able to skip a few episodes at a time and I felt like nothing really moved along. There are so many series out there that seem to have a ton of throwaway episodes.

[–]Dubzil 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes, both versions of FMA are good. While you're at it for god's sake watch Code Geass and Code Geass R2 (R2 has a major part of the plot so don't skip it).

[–]ericanderton 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You really should watch it, especially if you have a brother you care about.

Both tellings of the story (FMA and Brotherhood) are very good, and it's really a treat to be able to watch the same characters go through their trials and tribulations twice and still find it fresh and entertaining each time.

I say: watch FMA, love it for what it is, cry your eyes out, and rage at the ridiculous plot devices that resolve it all in the movie. Then watch Brotherhood and cry all over again, while enjoying a story that is more faithful to the manga.

[–]tomjenks1 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

couldnt figure out where to insert this so ill just do it at the end... FMA:B is the exact story of the manga, which is why its more consistent. FMA diverts somewhere around the 20ish episode i think, but is still an amazing story.

[–]ShawnDawn 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Watch FMA first than Brotherhood, FMA doesn't have that much info and more of the different story but still one of the best Anime. Brotherhood on the other hand fellows more the Manga so its a bit more "colorful" not very "dark" like the first one.

[–]Trilink26 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Read the FMA manga, better than anime I think.

[–]Zimyver 6 points7 points ago

Why did he have a metal leg then? Oh, right it was the first transmutation that cost him his leg. And the second was his arm to bind Al to the Armour.

[–]mcoree 13 points14 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Leg was for the mother, Arm was for Al

[–]eigen 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Wouldn't it be Al AND the leg for the first transmutation?

[–]stompythebeast 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Good question. I thought it was a life for a life. But if you watch the episode closely when they are at the gate with all the faces and what-not it seems that Al was too scared and couldnt get away or bargain a body part, so he lost his entire body? They never explain why Al had to lose his whole body and Ed only a leg. Other people that tried to transmutate a life also lost just a body part, like Ed's and Al's old teacher, she only lost her Uterus or something like that.

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

She lost several organs, including the uterus; thus the blood she coughs up. She survives using the power of badassery.

[–]Waqqy 0 points1 point ago

Alchemy aka badassery

[–]eigen 0 points1 point ago

Ah yes, I remember something like that from the manga. Only up to episode 5 in Brotherhood; will have to pay attention when I get to the explanation episode.

[–]Azerius 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That was it, Al and the Leg to make the ...thing... and move Al into it. Then the arm went to transfer Al out of the thing into the armor

[–]PersonOfInternets 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Al was in the thing? I thought he just went to the place.

[–]Spookaboo 0 points1 point ago

afaik al just went beyond the gate, i'm a bit fuzzy on what exactly homunculi use as souls. Ah it's all plot holed stories anyway.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

My thought exactly. I thought that was the mom in the thing.

[–]PanFlute 0 points1 point ago

In Brotherhood, Al was in the thing but in the first series, it was a homunculus.

[–]Surkow 0 points1 point ago

Later on is explained that it was the soul of his brother that was transferred to it. Definitely not his mother.

[–]Backupusername -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Not only that not only that not only that, but but but but they already had the armor. It only cost an arm to attatch. The armor was already there, they didn't have to buy it, OP's joke is wrong, it's bd, it's wrong!

Ed and Al are two young brothers. They research Human Transmutation but fail, resulting in the loss of Ed's left leg and Al's entire body. To save his brother, Ed sacrificed his right arm to affix Al's soul to a suit of armor.

Having watched the original first, then starting Brotherhood, I must say I was horribly dismayed at how bland the writing of Brotherhood was. Absolutely zero subtlety in the dialogue, and absolutely zero mystery in character development. Differences in plot aside, the original series is paced far better than Brotherhood.

[–]InMeteor 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The original run was actually the animation studio wanting to animate the series while it was still on it's print run. That story is very different from Brotherhood, which is the actual FMA story line as written by the creator and artist. The Studio's were just impatient and wanted a FMA Anime while the comic was still being hashed out.

I find Brotherhood's story to be significantly better.

[–]millennia20 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, I didn't like the first one too much, besides the end. I thought the end was kind of neat, and I thought the ideas behind the homonculi were cool even if it didn't make much sense. The first one also suffered from often what happens when you have a long anime series, in that many episodes just seem like padding. Brotherhood, besides maybe 2-3 episodes I felt really kept the pace going along. The first anime I could skip 3-4 episodes at a time and not much would have happened.

[–]Taco_the_Penguin 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

logged in to reply to this - it actually is totally worth it to watch both! FMA and FMA brotherhood are both excellent animes, each with different merits. I have to say, FMA is more emotional, and less gimmicky than Brotherhood - I loved the story, even its weirder ending. Brotherhood is more lighthearted, but has great fight scenes and a more "feel good" ending. I don't have time to elaborate more - but don't dismiss watching the other if you have seen one already ( and the similarities stop after around the first 10 episodes I think).

[–]timschwartz 0 points1 point ago
