The skeptic in me thinks there's probably some truth to this, but I think it goes deeper than that. The man may also just really enjoy his privacy.

[–]vwllss 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm confused, the skeptic in you believes the story?

[–]tinylittledick 7 points8 points ago

Especially when you're gay.. not that there's anything wrong with that.

[–]boxjelly 16 points17 points ago*

I am itching to say something more specific about his reasons.

That final statement may apply all the more for his circumstances, because Hollywood and the general American populace tends to typecast certain people's private lives more than others.

It would effectively limit the roles casting directors see him as capable of pulling off.

edit: the downvotes prove this

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

What exactly do the downvotes prove? I'm not saying I agree with the downvotes, but I don't see how they prove any of the things you suggested.

[–]boxjelly 2 points3 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I mean the downvoted comments, almost every one fixated on his sexuality.

They either out him or out him with slurs.

They prove that that's what they'll see. Before they simply see a brilliant actor, they'll see a gay actor.

Honestly, I think Neil Patrick Harris lucked out. He got famous again playing hyper-hetero characters so well, that when he came out (perfect timing) I think people who would have been tetchy about his sexuality had to like him because he played straight so well. So he's comfortable.

He's like a model minority, but for gay people.

It's weird. Straight actors get kudos for playing gay roles, but I think more effeminate gay actors, might have problems even getting cast as straight. A lot of people wouldn't take it seriously.

And if they play gay, well, that's what they are so they aren't really acting like a straight actor has to, right?

I have heard stories from friends in LA that Spacey has shown up to parties escorting two much younger very good looking gentlemen. So apparently, like everything else he does, he's awesome at being gay.

[–]uep 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This makes me wonder if he's actually bisexual. According to Wikipedia he's dated women and denied being gay, but that doesn't preclude him being bi.

Spacey has never married and staunchly protects his private life.[27] This has generated rumors regarding his sexual orientation. He has stated that he is not gay in the October 1999 issue of Playboy,[28] in The Sunday Times Magazine (December 19, 1999)[29] and in the May 2007 issue of Gotham Magazine.[30]

Voice actress April Winchell revealed in broadcasts of her KFI show, on her web diary and several other websites that she and Spacey dated for a while after high school during a run of the musical Gypsy and later went to New York together.[31][32] Between 1992 and 2000, Spacey reportedly discreetly dated Dianne Dreyer,[30][33][34] script supervisor to Anthony Minghella, M. Night Shyamalan and Sydney Pollack.[35]

[–]Big_Baby_Jesus 16 points17 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I really hope that Kevin Spacey suddenly busted a nut in M. Night Shyamalan's eye and then said "Didn't see that coming, did you?"

[–]pouterkeg 3 points4 points ago

No no no, he dated Dianne Dreyer, script supervisor to M. Night Shyamalan. He did not date M. Night Shyamalan.

[–]Big_Baby_Jesus 6 points7 points ago

Really? What a poorly constructed sentence. You're right because Sydney Pollack was married for 40 years. Oh well. I just hope somebody jizzes in M. Night's eye.

New Line executives originally balked at the film's ending, but Brad Pitt refused to make the film if the ending were changed.

Fuck yeah Brad Pitt.

[–]cole1114 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

But... they did change the ending. Didn't they? Wasn't it originally supposed to be Morgan Freeman that did it?

What? If this is true someone speak up.

[–]Th3Marauder 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No, it was always supposed to be Brad Pitt's character. One of the proposed "less depressing" endings was to have Morgan Freeman do it. The only change that was made from the ending that Pitt, Freeman and Fincher wanted was that the final scene where Brad is taken away and Freeman narrates over it was added in. Original it was supposed to cut to black in the helicopter shot of Brad walking away from John Doe's body.

On a side note: I still like the movie, but there's more perfect movies out there. I'll stick with Taxi Driver as being the most perfect movie ever made.

Die Hard for me.

[–]snoharm 160 points161 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It doesn't seem to me like most actors are trying to force their personal lives on us. Usually, it feels like magazines are trying to promote their lives. I don't think Brad Pitt wants us to see his babies particularly, he just can't avoid it because he's just so handsome.

Obviously, this doesn't apply to pseudo-celebs like Paris Hilton or Kim Kardashian.

[–]steers82 60 points61 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

There is a mutual relationship between magazines that have to sell and stars who have to keep their profile up. Even the biggest stars are party to it, willingly or otherwise. Pitt and Jolie were reported to have sold pictures of their kids to People for 4 million.

PS: I am just going to jump in here, because people have said below, "But it went to charity". Yes, excellent, they made money for a charity, by selling pictures of their kids. However that doesn't change the fact that they are using the public(ations)' insatiable desire for information on famous people for financial gain.

I am definitely not saying what they did was wrong. I am just saying that there is a clear mutually beneficial relationship between even the most famous people and the press.

[–]scallon 39 points40 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If you know that your children are going to end up on a magazine cover regardless of what you do to try and avoid it, the smart thing to do is control the situation. Break the first pictures yourself so that you remove some portion (no matter how small) of the drive in the paparazzi to follow your kids around.

Plus, I thought they donated the money?

[–]JPong 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, what they did was probably the best solution. Control the pictures getting released, so they look good. Remove the paparazzi drive for being the first to take the pictures.

And most importantly, the money the rags were offering didn't go to some scumbag paparazzi.

[–]snoharm 25 points26 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They also spend a shitload on charities. I'd sell my kids' pictures for 4m in a heartbeat, especially if it went to building homes in New Orleans.

[–]vaelkar 18 points19 points ago

[–]Jower 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

[–]redpariah 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That they donated to charity.

[–]pikpikcarrotmon 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If you were already a celebrity and a magazine offered you four mil for pictures of your kids...?

[–]steers82 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Of course I would take it, but the OP said that Pitt could not avoid it, which is clearly not the case. He probably could not avoid it for less than 4 million.

[–]WildeNietzsche 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

But Pitt is not actively trying to get in every US Weekly, but if you check one out while waiting in line at the store, he will definitely be in there, week in and week out.

[–]ArthurTrollington 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It was more a case of "photos are going to come out eventually, so might as well prevent the payout from going to the paparazzi". They donated the money to charity, as redpariah pointed out.

[–]Incalite 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Now that's how you make a living; selling pictures of your children to complete strangers so they can be featured in a magazine that reaches millions of complete strangers.

[–]elastic-craptastic 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, but that's not completely correct. These people have millions of dollars and multiple homes. They choose to live in LA and shop and eat in the most trendiest areas which are known to be stalked by paparazzi. They show up here and there for the "random" shots to keep them in magazines.

They don't have to live in LA to get work or function as an actor. Conference calls with a manger and then flights to international film sets don't require living anywhere near LA. Many of these actors just pretend to be bothers by this shit just to keep them in the rags longer. But Pitt and the like, IMHO, do not need to play that game anymore.

But I'm not a millionaire or an actor, or in the industry.... so what do I know.

[–]akaxaka 12 points13 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Being close to where you work is a huge boon! Especially if a lot of the work you get is through networking.

Why do you think silicon valley became a base for tech companies? Or how certain cities are known as creative hubs (like Berlin)?

[–]wishiwascreative 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I agree with you, but its not a requirement. This post in somewhat the perfect example. You don't see a lot of stuff in the media about Kevin Spacey that doesn't have to do with his movies. He keeps himself out of the spotlight because his privacy and his ability to become different characters is important to him.

Other actors have that same choice, and go in a different direction.

[–]Monkeyavelli 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

EDIT: Moved this reply to here from below.

It's not a requirement to live in those cities, but what if you just like living in NYC or LA because they're fun cities to live in? It seems unfair to say that just because you choose to live in those cities, you're an attention-monger.

Sure you might say you open yourself up to being stalked by cameras in these places, but you can't just assume they want to court those people by being in those places. You make it sound as if the choice is either live like a hermit and exile yourself from major cities/centers of culture or else you get what you deserve if you're hounded in these places.

For instance, I'm sure some stars purposefully set up "random" shots to keept their faces in the public mind. But if you're at this level of fame, you can't go anywhere without people knowing about it and filming you. Brad Pitt can't just walk down the street or go to a restaurant like you or I can without people around him saying, "Wow, it's Brad Pitt!" which inevitably draws the paparazzi who make their living off of his fame. Even if he didn't want them around there's little he could do about it unless he wants to become a complete recluse and never go out anywhere.

I have never been bothered by his off screen beliefs or quirks one bit. He's a great actor, that's all that matters to me.

I've never been a big People Magazine kind of guy, curious about the private lives of celebrities. I don't understand why I should be more interested in the life of a Tom Cruise than that of the guy sitting next to me on a bus. They're just people.

[–]evilgwyn 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

He's an ok actor, but he is a bit typecast, and I think he tends to take on easy roles. The only part I can think of that forced him to make some difficult choices was in Eyes Wide Shut, and he was pretty much outclassed.

[–]WildeNietzsche 38 points39 points ago*

No, Tom Cruise is a very good actor. He is one of the biggest quintessential movie stars of all time, while also pulling off impressive character work in Magnolia, Born on The 4th of July, Tropic Thunder, and Collateral. You might not like him, but if you ask anyone who knows their salt if Tom Cruise is a good actor, they will laugh at you for asking such a dumb question.

It's not that he's not a good actor, it's that his celebrity is greater than his ability to disappear into a role (usually) and it's often his celebrity rather than his acting ability that's used to promote a movie he's in. A lot of actors suffer from this.

[–]notmyselftoday 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Exactly the point Spacey was making. We know too much about Tom Cruise so it's hard to separate the actor from the character he is portraying in a movie. Personally I used to really enjoy his movies, but ever since the videos of him jumping on Oprah's couch or lecturing Matt Lauer about antidepressants went viral that's all I see when I watch his films. As I said elsewhere in this thread, Cruise has a much bigger hurdle to overcome to get the audience to believe he is the character and not just Tom Cruise playing make-believe. I'm not saying he can't do it, just that it's more difficult. Spacey is absolutely right regardless of whether he may have ulterior motives to keeping his private life to himself.

Easy roles? You think that playing a stoic or laughably unrealistic character is easy? Ask Keanu Reeves, bro: it's not easy.

This is so true. The more you know about the actor/actress, the less you can associate them with the character they're supposed to be playing. like, how could you watch a lindsay lohan movie without thinking about her "Extra curricular activites"?

good plan, one of the things which makes him awesome. I can't stand celeb culture honestly seems a bit silly. I think some people want to act mostly to act but have to do the celeb thing to promote themselves even though they don't want that kind of life of being hounded by people with cameras when they're not working. It seems unfair if that's not what they got into acting for.

I have to say I'm wilfully naïve when it comes to actors and movies. I go out of my way not to look at ANY spoilers (including posters in e.g. subway) beforehand and would feel like my innocence was raped away with a rake if I delved into actor/production trivia. That'd be breaking the illusion for me.

This of course has its downsides. In my world, Californication is just Fox Mulder daydreaming and movie Boromir didn't die, he was banished to rule over Winterfell.

Smart move. Not only does it show his dedication to his art, but it protects his real life AND it makes him more valuable to audiences. He's always had that "special" way about him, and I know it is because of this choice.

I heard him give an interview to the bbc recently in which he was asked about having given up smoking and drinking for a role he was doing in a play. He said he had indeed given those things up for the role, because he felt the role was very demanding and the audience deserved for him to be physically and mentally dedicated to doing the best he could.

Also, If you don't know.. He's also a grandmaster of impressions

In LA, it pays to be nice to the paparazzi because as much as they'll out you, they will also protect you. A good example is Jodi Foster. The press knew she was gay, but she was always polite and got to know the photogs and they never outed her.

Scumbags, yes, but also sometimes cool.

[–]CaptLudwig 1 point2 points ago

Yes, and if they hate you they do this:

Anderson Cooper has been consoling himself over falling ratings by living it up in Jaipur, India, at one of the world's most opulent hotels. The CNN star was spotted Tuesday with his muscular friend, Benjamin Maisani, an owner of East Village bar Eastern Bloc, at the Rambagh Palace, named the best hotel in the world by Conde Nast Traveler. Cooper's $3,200-a-night room features a four-poster mahogany bed and views of the gardens of the former Maharaja palace. Our source said, "Anderson's room has a large round bathtub. On the first night it was filled with bubbles and sprinkled with red rose petals." CNN declined to comment.

First, the N.Y. Post is a trashy right wing newspaper who's readers get off on salacious crap like this whether true or not.

Second, isn't Anderson Cooper already "out" as a gay man? I know he doesn't publicize it, but I thought he pretty much admitted it.

Third, why is this even in a paper other than for the purpose of smearing a rival news source? If Anderson Cooper was straight and instead of "muscular friend Benjamin Maisani" it was "voluptuous friend Scarlett Johannson", would this have even been printed?

Fourth, why is any of this wrong to begin with?

Sleazy tabloids and the people that buy that shit.

... more than likely he's just covering the fact that he's gay. Anderson Cooper says he "doesn't want to become the news story" in a similar fashion.

They all have their little excuses but in reality they feel it'll hurt their careers somehow, whether true or not.
