Looking for an image subreddit with minimal rules? Check out /r/images

A place to share interesting photographs and pictures. Feel free to post your own, but please read the rules first (see below), and note that we are not a catch-all for general images (of screenshots, comics, etc.)

Spoiler code

Please mark spoilers like this:
[text here](/spoiler)

Hover over to read.

Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

This is only true for Euclidean geometry. In elliptic or spherical geometry the lines may drift apart but will always rejoin. Much happier this way :)

[–]saute 39 points40 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Unless the other lines represent ogres.

[–]RumRunn3r33 2 points3 points ago

But what if they represent orgies?

They can never partner with another line. So they're basically confined to masturbation for eternity.

Meh. Same as this universe anyway.

Which is why learning to be a curve instead of a line can be beneficial.

if you look at possible lines in 3d, skew lines get closer and closer, but just before they meet they drift off for eternity. They really are forever alone.

[–]Boon_Retsam 0 points1 point ago

I think it's meant to be an analogy for humans.

Like, two people who meet and know each other for a short time, but then forever drift apart. And two people who are near each other, maybe never truly connect, but stay near each other for their lives, as well.

[–]PrinceAuryn 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This is the kind of crap that made me not interested in math when I was in 2nd or 3rd grade. Teachers would say these kinds of things like, "Lines go on forever, and parallel lines never meet ever." And I would feel sorry for them. And then of course I'd think about what forever meant, and about death and what it's like to know your choice is dying in 100 years, or living forever and never meeting another line that's next to you.

And by then it was recess and I hadn't listened to a word the teacher had said. So that night homework was difficult.

[–]dustinechos 3 points4 points ago

I believe this was first stated by Plato, and is the basis of the "Platonic friendship." The 2 people are represented by the lines. If parallel, they can remain close but never touch. Once 2 lines touch, they move in opposite directions.

[–]rossiohead 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The OP didn't indicate a non-projective plane, either. :)

I wasn't posting it to be haughty or to Throw Down a nerdrage debate; it was just a one-off comment, and I figured anyone genuinely confused would just Google for "parallel lines meet at infinity" and find that it is indeed a useful and common construct.

[–]Dewstain 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I would refute the "commonality" of it; I studied it in one course, Linear Algebra, and I took many many math classes.

I would also hold that the paper and drawing indicates Euclidean math and thus a non-projective plane.

Just my Nerdrage kicking in.

" However, you can construct other forms of geometry, so-called non-Euclidean geometries. For example, you can take the usual points of the plane and attach to them an additional point called "infinity" and consider all lines to also include this additional point. In this context, there is a single "infinity" location where all lines meet. In a geometry like this, all lines intersect at infinity, in addition to any finite point where they might happen to meet."

parallel lines meet at infinity http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Line_at_infinity

[–]Dewstain 1 point2 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No they don't. That's for perspective only; mathematically, the difference between x=1 and x=2 as they approach infinity will remain 1, no matter what.

Now, if you're talking about the intersection at the vanishing point of a projective plane, then you are correct. However, the original post is not showing that.

[–]surells 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I wish the OK guy was in the style sheet

[–]surells 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

on a final side note though, i wasn't talking about the vanishing point of a projective plane, but rather parallel lines in relation to curves seeing as space time is curved. Hence the point a triangle with two 90 degree angles meet at infinity, even though they are parallel, but that's more of a theoretical physics idea than a pure math one. http://mathforum.org/library/drmath/view/65379.html I think...

[–]Fuco1337 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's a very valid idea, the only problem is that it does not work in euclidean geometry. Our universe is not euclidean, that's probably where the "physics" in your comment is coming from.
