How fucking amazing would it be to wake up in your quaint seaside house one morning, look out your window, and see this bastard looming not 50m from the shore?

The ice island has an area of 100 square miles (260 square km) and a thickness up to half the height of the Empire State Building...

Reminds me of this art installation about a similar iceberg that came close to shore in Lubeck, Germany circa 1923. I have no idea whether it's historically accurate, but supposedly the beleaguered German citizens claimed the iceberg as a "free state," created all these amazing postcards and artifacts about it, and even went so far as to print "notgeld", or emergency money, for the new "country."

Haha awesome! Seeing icebergs is one of the best things about summer here but they don't seem to be reaching as far south (like down to St. John's) as they used to. I'm hoping for some good ones once the ice island breaks up.

[–]keebler980 11 points12 points ago

Could an iceberg that large drift into a harbor and cause major damage?

[–]seal_clubber1949 8 points9 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It depends which harbour or cove you are talking about here. The port in St. John's has a small opening, fittingly called the narrows. It would be very hard for an iceberg to make it in and if it did it would be so small that it could get towed out. However, in the past large icebergs have run aground out by the opening of the narrows shutting down the harbour. I think the last time it happened was in the 90's so a number of years ago.

In some communities with more exposed bays or coves it could happen where an iceberg can come in destroying warfs or piers. I don't know how common this is though because they usually just run aground.

[–]tenkwords 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Considering St. John's harbour is now filled with ships designed to tow and move icebergs about(to protect oil platforms) , I doubt there'd be much of an issue these days. Of course, one that big might cause trouble if it made it here.

[–]drappehsmada 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah you have to remember the whole "only the tip of the iceberg" thing, since harbours tend to be much shallower than the open ocean any large iceberg will certainly run aground before it comes close to striking any structures built along the shore. However, this can cause issues for naval traffic in the area.

A more dangerous form of ice is definitely drift ice which can completely clog harbours and exert huge amounts of pressure on boats and structures in the harbour.

[–]NSFyou 17 points18 points ago

Well, it happens to be that I am actually from Hamburg. As far as I heard, Immigrants from Hamburg invented the Hamburger Sandwich in NYC, what became the burger we like so much. Haven't you ever wondered that there is actually no ham in it?
And when it comes to the name hamburg it becomes boring, watch out, history: There was an Hamma Castle, but unfortunately it was as much literally grinded by the vikings (Norway) in the 12th century, that it couldn't be found since today under the city of Hamburg. Thank you for asking. :)

BETTER LIVING THROUGH CHEMISTRY!!!

The density of ice (assuming pure, with few gases impregnated within it) is 0.917 g/mL. Comparatively speaking, the density of oceanic salt water is 1.025 g/mL. That means the ice's specific gravity (or relative density) is 0.895 (no units here since the measurement is a proportional one). This would also be the proportion of ice that is hidden (always a profound realization, especially for such a large berg so close to shore).

For those who wonder at my using ice that is "pure", rather than ocean water, it is because the salt does not "freeze" with the water; the ice freezes separately. This does not mean the water would be entirely pure, since some salt water (and salt and other stuff) can become trapped by the ice as it initially froze. But similarly, the ice is obviously opaque, and that is likely the result of trapped gases as those gases come out of solution while the ice is freezing. It would be quite difficult to account for both factors without a physical analysis, so for the sake of discussion, I am assuming (making an ass out of U and some guy named Ming) that both factors cancel out.

So, if you're stranded without water in the Arctic, you can melt the ice and drink it. It may be salty, but not so much that your kidneys cannot handle it.

If a large chunk of that iceburg ever falls into the water, those water-front home are screwed.

I've only ever seen a real life iceberg up close in Iceland at the Iceberg Lagoon. The thing that struck me was how Blue they are. You think you know what blue looks like? Not until you see one of these bad boys up close. It was a pretty awesome moment just looking at it thinking, man, that is the bluest Blue I've ever seen.

Quaint little village, iceberg menacing their beaches. It helps if you play this in the background. I only wish someone had a time-lapse video of the 'berg's approach. :-)

That iceberg has been traveling to that very cost every year for the last 9 years. The locals call it "Mitch Iceburg."

I didn't know that it was Newfoundland because of the iceberg, I was only sure when I saw the truck cap laid on top of a trailer in the foreground.

There's no place like home.

Is this real? Is the water deep enough that close to shore to float an iceberg of that size?

[–]Phantom99[S] 7 points8 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's very deep there, and it is probably grounded.

EDIT: Oh, and this is very real.
