Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

Congrats. I hope you have better luck getting your lien released and the title placed in your name than I did. It took almost 6 months to get through the entire process after several trips to the county clerks office of the recorder and so many hours on the phone with the bank than I care to remember. I don't remember the words/terms any more, but basically the bank kept sending documentation like they were transferring the the deed to another mortgage company rather than what was needed to release the deed and allow us to have it retitled in our name. Best line of the whole thing was after the third attempt to get the paperwork right failed the person working at the bank said "We just send out the standard paperwork. I don't know what to do for you. Nobody ever pays their mortgage off, so I don't know what to send you." I ended up raising hell with just about everyone I could think of and ended up with an "Account Specialist" who worked it out and got me what I needed.

I work for a bank in the UK in their mortgage department. Releasing our charge from a title is all electronic now, literally takes less than 2 minutes.

Come and get a mortgage over here, pay it off and then enjoy the ease of getting your deeds sorted.

2 min vs. several months? I'm jealous, but I think I'll pass on another mortgage on my property at the moment. It isn't a standardized or automated process here in the U.S., that is for sure. I will admit that my situation was a little more complicated than the norm in the U.S., but I didn't expect it to be as convoluted of a process as it was.

We (wife and I) just about killed ourselves to get our mortgage paid off. Paid in full in 9 years and 7 months.

This is what it was like for me.

Congrats. Good investment I hope.

My parents bought thier Evanston, IL home for $85K in 1967. Put about $100K in it over 35 years. Paid it off in 1995. Sold it in 2003 (to retire) for $470K.

It's nice our parents were able to do this all their lives; unfortunately it has left us screwed. Not saying anyone is at fault here, I would have done the same (and tried/failed in 2006).

How much was the house?

How long did it take to pay it off?

What sort of payments were you making?

Any extra amount thrown at it throughout the period of time?

EDIT: Formatting.

I'm also quite curious about this. What was the original term of your loan? Did you refinance ever? etc.

Great job! We did the same last year. It feels even better when you start to see those mortgage payments going into your own bank account!!

yay! every time i finish off one of my student loans i think to myself, "im going to feel so rich having this extra 100 a month to spend!" i can't imagine how it is with a mortgage.

[–]Wolverine7 0 points1 point ago

Maybe you can take that 100$ to pay extra on your mortgage. The question is are you the type of person that lives for today or tommorow....

Older redditor here, paid mine off about 10 years ago. Yes it feels great.

A tip for those with mortgages, whenever you get a raise try and increase your mortgage payments at the same time, whenever you get a bonus check try and put a large chunk of it down on the mortgage. You can save thousands of dollars by doing this.

[–]MadtownLems 1 point2 points ago

When I bought a 4 bedroom house by myself, I was stretching it prettttty thin. Since then, I got a raise, got a part time job that paid 2x what I expected part time jobs to pay, started a consulting business, got a roommate, and started making real money from my hobbies.

Now, after refinancing, I'm paying 4x my payment most months and it feels great. Should have my original 30 year done in what'll end up being about 6 or 7 I think.
