As a european, i know only one person that uses opera. I know there is a wiki with use percentage per year, but i'm lazy.

[–]DeepDuh 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I know several (Switzerland). However Opera in my view has lost against Chrome lately. Startup speed, stability and tidy interface are just more important than some additional integrated features. It was, however, always better than FF for everyday use IMO.

[–]weekapaugr00ve 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Opera has imo the cleanest interface.... you can literally right click on any bar/menu and turn it off. This is what my opera install looks like opera and with tab stacks i can have 20+ tabs open and it doesn't feel at all cluttered. Not to mention I don't remember the last time opera crashed, it doesn't sound like you have really given it a chance (like most people unfortunately)

[–]DeepDuh 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Uhm yeah I used Opera as my main browser since it went off the advertisement (around 2003 or so). Since 10.x the stability went WAY down, it has just more ore less recovered now. The interface is clean, yes, but you have to quite some setup to get it the way you want - every time you install your pc. This is where Opera has missed a huge opportunity with their Opera sync - it should simply include your preferences in the sync and be done with it - at least then you only have to set it up once per OS you use.

[–]weekapaugr00ve 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I definitely agree that syncing preferences would be awesome, wish they would implement that. I too have been using opera for years and I don't believe I ever encountered serious stability problems? Maybe I've just been lucky. Either way, I've grown so accustomed to it, I couldn't imagine switching to any other browser.

[–]slughappy1 1 point2 points ago

I've never really had tons of problems with FF, other than the huge memory it takes up. I hear that the new FF version will take care of that, so I'll probably use that more than Chrome in the near future.

To be fair, when I first tried IE9, I was quite impressed by the new interface. I'm a Chrome guy, and it was very sleek and intuitive like Chrome (i.e. stolen) and seemed responsive.

I tried to give it a fair chance but the third time the entire web browser froze for ~5 seconds waiting for something to complete from a server, I switched back to Chrome.

Care to enlighten me why IE9 is not as good as other browsers? Can't seem to figure that out...

[–]Sciar 20 points21 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Basically as a developer you have to double code everything for IE. Now I will say one nice thing first, IE9 is a HUGE improvement over the shit heap that is older IE browsers. Now on to the mean stuff, IE has been long known for how horrible it is, most of your customers (Web users) are stuck using some old outdated crap version of IE. Even the ones that have the newest version will not see the product you're trying for originally. When you spend months coding something very specific and you want it to display perfectly and IE goes "DURR 40 PIXELS TO THE RIGHT" and ruins all your shit you want to go crazy.

The simplest way I can describe it is like a pair of prescription glasses. Imagine if the eye doctor had one set of prescription rates for everybody but had to give them three pairs of glasses. Two of the companies made the exact same prescription EVERY time but the third one was different. Could he do it? Yeah sure of course. But he'd have to recalibrate everything and work and tweak and add on piles of extra just to incorporate this third shit company. If he chose to ignore this then the customer wouldn't see things properly. It'd be blurry or offset. That's how web development works, if you want to save time it simply will not line up in IE.

TL;DR- IE shows things one way, everybody else shows things another way.

[–]noamsml 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Just to be sure. Do you put an HTML5 doctype at the top of your pages? IE9 has different "modes" in which it renders pages. If you omit the doctype/use certain outdated doctype, it'll put itself into its shitty "compatibility" and "quirks" modes. If you use the correct doctype, it'll go into "standards" mode, which is actually really good.

[–]vandil 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This is something that people don't seem to understand. If you write a completely standards based page, IE9 will do great with it. If you write a page that doesn't follow the standards, IE9 assumes you are trying to target the previous rendering engine, and will render it as such. It isn't a shitty "compatibility" mode, it simply renders it to follow the previous engine. If I wrote my page to target IE6, and it rendered it based on the IE9 "standards" mode, it wouldn't look right.

Yes, it sucks that previous versions of IE rendered things differently, but if a developer truly hates having to deal with previous versions, then they don't have to. It will speed up the transition of developers to newer browser versions when enough pages just look wrong in the users browsers. Of course, if your goal is to reach the biggest audience, you'll have to deal with it, since there is still a huge percentage using pre-IE9 versions.

[–]Sciar 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The only problem I've had with any pages I've made lately is with IE7. I'd love to say "Don't support IE7 it's too old" but according to analytics I'm wrong.

But yes I set an HTML5 doctype. Some of the sites I have to work with however don't always allow for this and I'd love to get into why old deprecated code shouldn't be supported and makes you want to stab yourself in the eye with a fork but it pays the bills so I'll struggle through it.

[–]EtherGnat 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The only problem I've had with any pages I've made lately is with IE7

So isn't it more fair to say IE7 was a shitty browser than to make the same claim about IE9?

[–]Sciar 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well I said lately, IE9 has been a giant shitbag to me in the past as well. In the last couple of months I've only built a few pages and I can't specifically say I've had to make any work-arounds for IE9. This does not mean I have only had wonderful experiences with IE9. My statement was not black and white.

If I never again build another website IE9 would no longer be an issue, that doesn't suddenly make it a good browser either. Any developers I have spoken to would all be perfectly content if IE just died off and stopped receiving updates.

[–]iamverificationimage 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I just wish as a developer just starting up, that Microsoft would drown their baby for the good of the world, and to make life easier for me. I've started using Dot Net Nuke as part of my Intenrship and IE hates it. I've seem to have gotten the grasp of it lately but, when I do fix the main issue with IE another one pops up

[–]NotAgain2011 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Being a developer, I hadn't used IE in years for anything other than testing a page layout (more about this all around) but I finally opened it the other day as I already had a lot going on with FF and Chrome. After 1 search and 2 clicks I had to close it as it was slowing everything down and jamming up. Seriously, IE is not even software.

[–]nickcrz 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

As i said it before, i am going to say it again. These stories you guys claim of IE slowing down and having tons of viruses and jamming up are plain bullshit!

Edit: heck IE9 lets you manage what plug in runs and gives you the option to disable all plug ins.

[–]NotAgain2011 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Even with all the plugins disabled, on an i7 at 2.6Ghz with 6gb ram it still bogs down my system in a few minutes. I haven't had any virus problems, but then I don't really use it much.

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm a developer and I don't mind IE9. A built-in firebug wannabe and an easy way for testing IE7/IE8 compatibility have made life easier. Having to test for IE7/IE8 is kind of a bummer though, but that's life.

[–]FacialTurd 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

As a developer, IE9 is fine. IE6 was a bit of a pain, any quirks were sorted out in IE7 and IE8. I find the people that moan about it just aren't making standards compliant HTML/CSS, a poor workman blames his tools.

I have to use Explorer when watching Hulu. I have my laptop hooked up to my 46" LED TV and there is something between Chrome and my TV that causes my laptop's WiFi connection to drop about 30 seconds into a show. All. The. Time. Lots do, but it's quickly earned itself a rather large chunk of the Internet navigation pie, so Google is clearly doing something way better than IE ever did, and that was pretty easy in the first place anyway. (Used to use: IE until I turned 13, Firefox after that, switched to Chrome around 2007 on a 2001 desktop literally from the shopping channel, Chrome's one-task, one tab is the only reason I switched, because Firefox would just die after 3 tabs, the computer just couldn't even handle it, at all).

I've used chrome since I was 12, you were slow.

[–]Kazhawrylak 0 points1 point ago

I'm well aware, I adopted it 7 years ago, and haven't switched because it runs amazingly on anything I install it properly on, including the shittiest of computers (installed it on a Dell shopping channel special from 3 years ago, the thing's completely useless already, but the laptop managed to last about a month before my mom completely killed it, which is still better than I'd give Dell credit for any day).

[–]nickcrz 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

IE9 handles the 1 Task 1 Tab better than Chrome. Chrome crashes very often and would crash all tabs. So far every version of Chrome still do this. IE9 just crashes that one tab alone and keeps going.

[–]middo 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You say this but I don't have any issues with Chrome on any of my machines anywhere I use it (2 at home and all over the place on many clients at work).

The only time there is any bed shitting is when Flash dies. Even then it's not a big deal, each page with a flash widget just needs to be refreshed and it all comes back.

[–]Kazhawrylak 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I've used every version of Chrome since it's come out, that's remarkable that that's the case, because since switching it's crashed on me less than a handful of times, and as a Redditor and a radio DJ I'm on the Internet so much that it's my second home.

[–]KryptosV2 15 points16 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

  • It can't remember passwords that you've updated
  • No built-in RSS feed management and the extensions for it are pretty bad
  • Same, if not more memory usage than Firefox, and a PDF or locked tab still causes the whole browser to not respond. Hell, even just having a few tabs pinned will cause it to perform miserably for a minute or so when first running it
  • Copying a URL in the address bar adds on the protocol (even though it shows it removed
  • Plays around with the standard Windows window management icons and a disgusting blue bar running along the top
  • Lackluster community making themes, don't even know if it actually exists
  • Special scripts on Youtube, Google search, etc. that only work on Chrome meaning they're undoing years of W3C compliance
  • Can't right click a background to view it or a picture to view image info (without needing an extension)
  • Developer tool is incredibly clunky compared to Firebug and has a major bug with saving elements
  • Drop-down lists for remembered passwords/details that are generated don't have a scrollbar

I could honestly go on and on about what annoyances it has.

Once i had about 75 youtube tabs open (playing one at a time). In Firefox. Sure it took about 700MB, but it worked fine. But i couldn't even start to do something like that in Chrome. First, it's like it grabs resources exponentially, second, IT ONLY HAS ONE ROW OF TABS!

I still use Chrome (like right now), but only with a few tabs at a time. And RES works better in Chrome.

  • Chrome lacks some hooks for extensions (so there can be no Certificate Patrol for Chrome, for example)
  • hardware acceleration is a nice idea, but there needs to be a way to turn it off or a better blacklist (I used chrome for a month as primary browser, had more system freezes than all years before)
  • sync is pretty weird (never got it to work properly)
  • awesome bar is less awesome (I love how you can just dump words in the address bar of firefox and it finds the site you have visited you were looking for)

What? You have an issue with Google extending it's defacto search monopoly into a realm it has no purpose in? For the purpose of driving users to it's monopoly?

Google would never do that.

what's not to like? webkit engine, fluid updating system, wide selection of add-ons, quick to load, fast rendering, good hci.

i used ff for years but afaic, it can't currently compete with chrome's speed. chrome for me is as quick and reliable as safari but with the added extensibility of firefox-like add-ons.

my only contention is that chrome firebug sucks in comparison to ff's but i have all browsers loaded for cbc-testing so i can always jump back to ff for a quick debug. chrome remains my primary 'browsing' browser.

[–]Silenced_is_Foo 3 points4 points ago

Not only that, but it means your whole OS experience is better because you no lnoger have to run the annoying updaters. The Adobe updater is hidden inside Chrome, you don't need to run the clumsy and rude Firefox or Safari updaters because you're using a different browser, and the Java updater you don't need anymore because fuck Java.

So you only need Windows Update and the silent and efficient Chrome updater.

Overrated argument. They're all browsers, they all browse. Some do things others don't, and others do things some don't. IE9 is pretty good, my limited experience with chrome in the past was crashy, and my long-term experience with everything else says who f'in cares. Back to browsing.

I actually yelled "wtf this browser is so retarded! My son and I looked at each other and broke into laughter. That is the best time I have ever had using ie.

Generally good... Sigh...

I do a tutorial for some kind CSS or AJAX that I'm rusty or unfamiliar with, I'm just waiting for the bit in the tutorial that says: "Ok so we've covered how to implement this feature so that it works in Firefox and Chrome... and Opera, Safari and every other browser in the world... NOW here's the hack-workaround what you have to do to make it work in Internet Explorer, because it's fucking stupid"

I have to say, I don't quite get all the hate for IE. It takes more customization to get going correctly (disable all the annoying questions it asks and whatnot), but once that's done it runs as well as FireFox.

Can someone tell me something specific that you can do in FireFox that you can't do in IE? Don't give me any security or speed claims; they can't be subjectively tested.

[–]digitalpencil 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It is an absolute and unmitigated disaster for developers.

IE9 is a step in the right direction and IE10 beta, better again but neither even remotely compare to modern, standards-compliant browsers.

It won't make much difference to end-users but IE remains the primary reason for developers breaking into tears at 4 O'Clock in the morning, screaming unholy curses at the utter abomination that is the Trident rendering engine.

Basically the issue is this, building for the web is not one-size-fits-all, there are lots of small nuancical differences between different clients; primarily OS, resolution, screen-size/orientation, desktop vs mobile and browser.

The vast majority of browsers render content the same way so Firefox, Chrome, Safari, Opera etc. then there's IE. IE breaks layouts like a child breaks duplo, without thought or concern. It is such a problem that conditional values have to be implemented wherein alternate styling information (css) is ascribed to only IE in a hopes that users of this browser will still be able to view and navigate content.

It's what's called 'standards-compliancy' which is where browser vendors honour established rendering criteria, prescribed by the W3C, to allow for better inter-operability and reduce the usage of proprietary implementations which reduce that inter-operability. MSIE all but ignores these standards, instead opting for their own implementations which ultimately mean that you either code like it's 1994, or sacrifice functionality on IE's end and just try to make something that remotely functions in that browser.

As I said, this is slowly improving however it has a long way to go.

The other major problem is the update cycle. IE6/7/8 remain highly used browsers despite the former being over a decade old. Attempting to create content that works with modern systems and retains IE6/7 compatibility is like trying to play a colour picture on a black and white tv where SVG, HTML5 Canvas & CSS3 would be akin to HD/IMAX/3D. The inherent problem is that Microsoft, in their infinite financial wisdom, built IE9 in such a way that it's not backwards-compatible with legacy Windows installs, so whilst a large portion of corporate infrastructure remains tied to XP, users of this OS cannot even hope to load a modern browser made by MS. In an ideal world they would all upgrade their PCs to a modern Windows install or *nix/osx but corporate infrastructure is not simple for a variety of reasons and consequently, XP still holds a sizeable market-share.

So to sum up, it's not awful for users because anything you've viewed on it has at least been attempted to gracefully degrade to the point that it still renders the primary content on your screen. It is the most despised thing on the web since AOL for developers because trying to build for it is akin to pushing your nice new car down a crevasse and somehow hoping it will survive the ordeal.

tl;dr: IE users make webdevs cry ;(

[–]Hijaru 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I have no clue why you are getting downvoted. You are pretty much right. I agree with what you said, and if IE wasn't so stubborn, we would've had HTML5 and CSS3 standards in the next 3 years, instead of 9 years when IE has all the current standards.

I know it is tough for Microsoft to basically develop IE from scratch (instead of adjusting their current code bit by bit), but it would make the web a more accessible place.

[–]digitalpencil 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

i'm told it's because i touch myself ;)

yeah, the agency i work for tends to charge for IE6/7 compatibility these days (it's becoming standard industry practice). I quite like MS in all fairness, i'm primarily an OS X user as i prefer the workflow, app frameworks and use xcode/fcp etc. but i've a soft spot for W7 and IE is improving. It's just a shame how reluctant they have been to adopt dominant standards in the past and how cavalier their attitude has been as it really does inhibit the potential for a unified, online experience for all.

[–]electricsandstorm 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It is (maybe was, I haven't even checked in a while) full of security holes and a nightmare for devs. It deserves the hate.

[–]bricardo -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Maybe IE9 is more customizable(don«t know, never used it), but <IE8 definitely fails in the customization battle against firefox or chrome.

It is also patched less often, so it is less secure. And for a browser embedded in the system, it is not as fast as it should be.

Also, only now did it start to follow the standards...and poorly.

Fuck IE. So many better options out there.
