Looking for an image subreddit with minimal rules? Check out /r/images

A place to share interesting photographs and pictures. Feel free to post your own, but please read the rules first (see below), and note that we are not a catch-all for general images (of screenshots, comics, etc.)

Spoiler code

Please mark spoilers like this:

Hover over to read.

Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

It looks like he is angrily taking his tiny yellow pages out to recycling.

Even the ants don't want the Yellow Pages anymore.

My first reaction "How did they get the ant to stand still with the microchip?"

Thank you god sir.

Edit: I see it but I'm not going to change it.

Wait, ants have mastered the micro processor! This must be true then: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3LDnQpD_uFQ I for one welcome our new ant overlords!

why does it have to be an electron microscope? ants aren't even that small

Because electron microscopes are freaking awesome

The ant was probably already dead though, because they have to cover him in gold before taking the photo

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They have to cover him in gold because otherwise the electrons build up a negative charge in the area and they are deflected which in turn distorts the image.

I had a friend who let me come into the lab to see him mess with an electron microscope to study fleas.

[–]phongbong 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Forgive me, don't electrons already have a negative charge?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes, but what the gold does is transfer the electrons so they don't build up in one spot like they would with other materials.

When you get a lot of electrons in one spot, it builds up a charge which repels the electrons that the electron microscope is trying to use to see the item, thus distorting the image.

[–]hallclone 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

"negative charge in the area"

[–]jrhoffa 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That's ... that's why a negative charge builds up. From all the electrons.

[–]pseudolobster 3 points4 points ago

It's funny to think the beam from the microscope would have killed both the ant and the chip.

[–]nukacolaftw[S] -3 points-2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It just scans electrons.

[–]pseudolobster 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It scans using electrons. It fires a high intensity beam of them at an object, then observes the reflected electrons to construct a picture of the subject.

[–]nukacolaftw[S] -2 points-1 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I know, I just didn't answer with detail. I just don't see how electrons would kill the ant.

[–]pseudolobster 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's a high voltage beam of thousands of volts. I don't see how it wouldn't.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Even if it killed, it would kill it after taking the picture.

But, as far as I remember, electron microscopes require vacuum, I'm not sure.

[–]jabogen 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They do require a vacuum. They also require coating your samples with a metal prior to bombarding them with electrons. Usually a mixture of gold and palladium.

[–]SuperConductiveRabbi 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The coating is to prevent charge buildup and sudden discharge, and is often gold or carbon. Vacuum isn't entirely necessary, as variable pressure chambers exist, and would allow you to get a decent image at that small magnification without coating the samples.

[–]PersonOfInternets 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

One type requires this (both require a vacuum).

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well, the beam has energy ... and probably ionizes a shit ton of atoms in the ant. Small discharges between parts of the ant takes place and burns parts of the tissue?

[–]PersonOfInternets 1 point2 points ago

If this was taken by an electron microscope, this ant is dead and in a vacuum. This is tiny taxidermy. Although that must be an incredibly small ant, and microchip. This makes less sense the more I think about it...

[–]PillPod 2 points3 points ago

It just needs to be a conductive surface. Metals work great in SEMs. If you put plastics or semiconductors in there, the image will look fuzzy due to charging on the surface. To solve this, you coat the sample with carbon.

[–]vincentrevelations 0 points1 point ago

Electron imaging can produce "shadows" too. If the electron beam comes from an other angle as the receptor, there can be a shadow. And as you can clearly see, the ant's mouth produces a shadow on the chip.

My guess is that the background is shooped in.

I work as a Field service engineer for an EM company. One of the first things many of my customers does is image a bug. A basic SEM (scanning electron microscope) mag range is from about 15x to 300,000x. So it's possible. But this image has been colorized. EM pics are greyscale unless artificially colorized.

This looks shopped. I can tell cuz some of the pixels and because I've seen quite a few shops in my time.

But seriously, it does. I've seen quite a few SEM images in my time, and they are not this good.

electron microscopes don't produce color images

That's great and all but did you think that this image was maybe colored in by someone?

This was not taken by an electron microscope. If you ever took a high school science class, then you would know this was from a light microscope and had a chip added with photoshop.
