Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  6. No animated images. Please submit them to /r/gif, /r/gifs, or /r/reactiongifs instead.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

I'd say even if we don't have free will it is a very convincing illusion. It really doesn't matter if freewill exists or not unless we get to a point where we can predict what people are going to do accurately, which I suppose we can do to a limited extent already.

It doesn't really matter in terms of accountability anyway, whether or not some vague non-concept like free will exists doesn't effect the value of our actions.

well....actually it does. If our actions are dependent on predicatable causal events then where does that leave the concept of blame?

Except it would be predetermined who you would blame and who you not blame. As all agency would essentially be removed questions about the morality of any given "choice" would become trivial.

relevant: http://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/1969/12/the-brain-on-trial/8520/

tl;dr: people do dumb shit, find out they have brain tumors, get them removed and become normal again (though in some of the examples, people did crazy shit and after they died we found they had brain tumors)

Not really. Blame is a non-concept anyway. Either people are valuable or they aren't.

Does that mean we should yell at retarded individuals for being stupid? No, that isn't likely to change their behavior. There is no point in looking down on them and we have decided, as a society, to take care of them because we want that kind of safety in place for ourselves and our loved ones should we or they ever fall into that kind of situation.

Does it matter that it was destined for a rapist to be an asshole since the day the universe began? Not really, the future exists the way it does because of the actions we make now, it doesn't matter if there is only one way it ever could have been or not. Locking him up or whatever is still just as correct.

Free will is nothing more than Humanity trying to provide meaning for itself in the universe where there is none. We are nothing more than physical objects so what makes us unique? What makes us have free will where other physical objects dont?

So what happens if you choose to turn to page 42 instead? Does the universe reset itself?
