I totally agree. There must be something about the equalizing effect. All flaws are "averaged" out and the faces tend to be perfectly symmetrical.

definitely.

this was first noticed when police averaged photos of criminals to search for any pattern. while each individual looked relatively ugly, every average out of at least 20 looked very beautiful.

This is more than rounding hard edges, it also points out that "beauty" is not objective but also defined by "average" of a population, wich seems to correlate to "health ad fitness" within that population and its environment.

i was saying "ya think?" as in "no shit." i was surprised people were getting upvotes for stating the painfully obvious and intuitive phenomenon. you'd have to be very young or dense to need an explanation for why the faces are aesthetically pleasing.

I think they mean as in South African stemming from Dutch Settlers. True, 90% of people living in South Africa aren't South African, they mostly belong to various cultures. But "South African" typically refers to the white people. *Edit; referring to Afrikaners and English Afrikaners. Using just Dutch was inaccurate, "European" would have been better.

Are you high? Firstly, why would they mean only the Dutch? That excludes many South Africans of European origin (Portuguese, British), and the majority of the population and various other races in South Africa (Indian, Chinese, Coloured {the South African Coloured}). Almost 100% of people who live in South Africa are, in fact, South African. 'South African' typically refers to South African citizens.

High? Well, no. I didn't mean to exclude all other European origins, but Dutch is the main one. It is where the Afrikaans language stemmed from, after all. I just meant to use it as an umbrella reference for the settlers. And I assume this census would exclude immigrants. And I apologize for leaving out a few other groups. But my point is that if they included all South African citizens, the girl's skin would not be so light. So I just assumed that they only included English Afrikaners and Afrikaners.

Yes, that's why it's more likely that someone made a mistake, as is the case. Given our history, excluding the majority of the population to arrive at an average of the population would be fitting the Apartheid system, implying that black South Africans aren't real South Africans.

For the sake of this census, I think they excluded native South Africans. I don't see Native Americans, either? Or Aboriginals? (Or Australians, teehee, but I guess that falls under "English")

Yeah, there are a lot of countries missing, I doubt this is a full list. I'm sure people have posted links to the source(s), but to be honest I lost interest. Someone has already pointed out that Central African is actually South African, and South African is actually Argentine. I didn't follow up or verify it, but it makes a lot more sense, and I'm accepting that as an explanation. :D

Yeah, my girlfriend is afrikaner so I kinda get it. But in truth there are about a dozen recognizable dialects and cultures/colors in the cape area and S.Africa the country or sub-continent is still almost entirely non-white

Just to clarify: average features are features which are the common point or the, well, average of all the features of all the women combined. Not "the woman you see on the street", but an approximation of the most common traits of that nation. An ugly person can still have the basic features of that nation and be ugly.

I've heard that with male faces you don't get the same amplification of attractiveness. Averaged together they become effeminate, because all the sharp rugged edges get smoother.
