There is actually a very good reason why she's seen as being worse than Voldemort. Voldemort is absolute evil to its core. Dolores Umbridge represents a different kind of evil, one that each and everyone of us can see in real life. A person who hides behind smiles and has sadistic need for control.

None of us can really relate to fighting against a being like Voldemort. But we sure as hell know someone like Dolores Umbridge.

Definitely, at my school we had a teacher who had "rules are rules" as a catchphrase. Not even used in jest, she was dead serious, like a prison warden.

[–]electriczap4 142 points143 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

1) Find loophole in school rules, something to the effect of not banning bicycles in classrooms

2) Abuse loophole

3) When confronted, say "rules are rules."

4) ????

5) DETENTION!

"There's a time and a place for everything.... but not now!"

The translating kinda fell off later in the series.

At least they just had you remembering what he had said instead of him being psychically linked to you and yelling at you when you used your bike/whatever.

This is the best comment that I've seen all day.

[–]heavyweather77 57 points58 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This is a great observation, and it makes her one of the most brilliant characters in the series. She's profoundly disturbing because her existence is completely plausible, magical instruments of torture aside. I've never wanted so badly to punch a hole through a projected image, or to jump into the page and roundhouse a fictional bitch in the jaw. That's effective character development.

[–]DocTaotsu 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This was every injustice I read/saw in fiction as a child. Though I knew not the words yet, Cinderella's step-sister made me want to choke a(some) bitch(es).

[–]DefenestrableOffence 27 points28 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I disagree. I think Umbridge is far more evil for Voldemort. She seems to revel in sadism, whereas Voldemort's actions are instrumental: he really just wants to rule the world.

[–]Disgod 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

His actions, as explained in the books, are driven by fear. Dolores' actions are driven by a puritanical certainty in her own actions being absolutely correct along with a joy in the pain of others. In the end you have more empathy for Voldemort than you could ever have for Umbridge.

[–]rocketsauce2112 37 points38 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

So her character alignment would be Lawful Evil? And Voldemort would be Always Chaotic Evil?

Edit: TV Tropes has Umbridge at Lawful Evil and Voldie at Lawful/Neutral Evil. I agree with them.

[–]solastsummer 35 points36 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

i wouldn't say voldemort was choatic evil. he was working to establish an ordered society.

[–]mHo2 57 points58 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'd say he'd be neutral evil, and someone like bellatrix would be chaotic evil..

[–]nermid 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

But he wanted a rigid, draconian system of absolute laws in his ordered Lawful Evil society.

His hopes and dreams are Lawful.

[–]mHo2 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Maybe, but his day-to-day actions were pretty damn chaotic, take for example in the latest movie, he kills off death-eaters for saying one or two words.. or in the first book, he needs to consistently remind himself that he is on a task(to kill harry), and cannot kill trick-or-treaters.

[–]nermid 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm relatively sure the first didn't happen in the books (and realizing that your safety net of soul shards is gone will drive people to crazy things), and the second was because he was sharing a skull.

Movie villains are almost always cartoonishly murder-happy, because Hollywood is convinced that we don't like subtlety.

[–]rocketsauce2112 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You're right. TV Tropes has him as either Lawful Evil or Neutral Evil, and who am I to question the wise sages at TV Tropes?

[–]hhmmmm 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

no neither particularly fit either of those.

and voldemort certainly isnt chaotic evil. an evil overlord, but he wants control and purge not to just destroy for the sake of it. he really is fairly lawful evil, and he wants to make the laws.

umbridge i guess is a different variation one who works within the laws (mostly) to dominate, control and cause misery to others beneath her.

[–]CrazyEddie041 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

She'd be lawful neutral, wouldn't she? She doesn't give a damn about good or evil: she's not on Dumbledore's side, but she's not actively trying to help Voldemort either. She just makes and enforces rules regardless of their moral scope.

[–]The_Law_of_Pizza 16 points17 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't mean to start a sexist shit-storm with this, but I have a question:

Is it just me, or is the "Umbridge archetype" almost always embodied as a middle-aged woman?

I've known a few different people of the Umbridge sort in my life, and they've all been middle-aged women. No old women. No young women. No men. Always middle-aged women, with big smiles on their faces as they inform you that you're going to be punished, and that you deserve it and should enjoy the fact that you're being punished because you broke some arbitrary rules.

[–]Syphon8 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They're sexually repressed psychopaths.

You get psychopathic men, but they aren't sexually repressed most times.

[–]shoulderoforion 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I've noticed that too. I wonder if it's a play on the idea of mothers? Or maybe it's that people would read a middle-aged male character doing those actions as far more threatening right off the bat because men tend to command more authority, whereas with the middle-aged female character there's a way to draw out the spiral into sadism? I don't really know, but it's an interesting point you bring up.

[–]Dtrain323i 8 points9 points ago

Umbridge would be the president of an HOA

I cannot recall ever hating a fictional character this much. Ever.

[–]NonAmerican 206 points207 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

In the book she's more evil. In the movie she's that kind of annoying lady; in the book she's an evil bitch that will psychologically terrorize Harry.

I do believe the movie tried to portray that but it ended up showing her more lightly as a very annoying person, rather than a psychological burden on the soul of a kid.

[–]BowmanTheShowman 102 points103 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I agree. She is absolutely evil in the books. The actress did a great job in the movies, but they took out a lot of what made Umbridge so horrifying.

[–]Matriss 65 points66 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think that can be partially attributed to the fact that the movies do not have Harry's inner monologue throughout the way the books do. We knew every detail of what she was doing to him in the books, in the movies it's only there if you've already read the books.

[–]achillobator 47 points48 points ago

[–]Dr_Merkwurdigliebe 38 points39 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

In the books she really is worse than Voldemort, in her way.

Voldemort is an evil that you can face head on. He's out to kill, destroy, and enslave by force. Umbridge is out to similar ends, only she is much harder to confront owing to her legitimacy as an authority figure and propensity for psychological torture. Don't get me wrong, though, I'd still rather run into her in a dark alley than Voldy.

You lose some of it in the movie.

LEAVE SANSA ALONE!

[–][deleted] 31 points32 points ago

I think I can keep this spoiler free.

Sansa isn't as bad in the books, just living in her own naive little world.

And I love how Cersei seems like a desperate housewife compared to certain villains in the other books and the next season.

[–]IntensionallyRong 41 points42 points ago

If anything Sansa is worse in the books.

[this part isn't shown in the show] Because of her naive fantasy of becoming queen she [First Season/Book Spoiler ahead]

tells Cersei of her father's plan to send them away, thus getting her entire house (including her father) killed. I can never forgive her for that.

[–]9mackenzie 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well look at it this way- she was raised to be like that. Women were bred to be wives and have babies, plus she was only eleven. She did not understand what was going on.

[–]hhmmmm 6 points7 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

i always thought that was ambiguous at best. I thought she signed a confession saying that was his plan, giving them the legitimacy to get ned etc she didnt actually tell them cause they already knew.

[–]toroi 15 points16 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

no, she warned them that Ned Stark was about to ship them off (ergo, make his political move to oust them) and they struck before that happened. They were likely all going to die anyway, but thanks to her, it's inferred that she let them catch the Starks with their pants down.

At least that's what I read into it...

[–]caelus 7 points8 points ago

I thought the whole conversation Ned had with Cersei about incest and murder, and giving her a chance to leave is what got him killed.

basically she is a workplace psychopath, you get them more than you think.

estimates of psychopathy in the general population tend to place it at about 1/100 or so. Socialized psychopaths dont go round killing people but they harbour the traits of the psychopath.

I think umbridge is an excellent portrayal of that, whether it was intentional or not, no empathy, someone who tries to control, domineer, manipulate and when given the change cause pain etc.

[–]Irongrip 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Psychopaths don't feel a need to kill. They have no qualms about it either if it suits their goals.

[–]hhmmmm 6 points7 points ago

Society would be a lot more sane if psychopaths were randomly distributed at 1%, but their lack of conscience and doing whatever it takes to get what they want places them disproportionately in positions of power much to our detriment.

[–]Bwob 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, that's what made her work. Voldemort was the fantasy-epic-big-bad, the evil quasi-undead wizard who wants to take over the world and who hurls around death curses and blows people up. He was basically a comic book villain in a lot of ways. And while he had a backstory, and character development, at the end of the day, the threat from him was just that he was a scary evil wizard building an empire.

The terrifying thing about Umbrage was that she was was NOT a comic book villain. She was very believable. She wasn't an amazing wizard prodigy like Voldemort. She was an average wizard-citizen who was petty, cruel, and unfeeling, and who was put in a position of authority where she could act on those traits. And did. In a scarily believable way.

The reason she was scarier than Voldemort was because she was something that could (and does occasionally) happen in the real world.

Page 849:

Since she had returned to the castle she had not, as far as any of them knew, uttered a single word. Nobody really knew what was wrong with her either. Her usually neat mousy hair was very untidy and there were bits of twig and leaf in it, but otherwise she seemed to be quite unscathed.

“Madam Pomfrey says she’s just in shock,” whispered Hermione.

“Sulking, more like,” said Ginny.

“Yeah, she shows signs of life if you do this,” said Ron, and with his tongue he made soft clip-clopping noises. Umbridge sat bolt upright, looking wildly around.

“Anything wrong, Professor?” called Madam Pomfrey, poking her head around her office door.

“No… no…” said Umbridge, sinking back into her pillows, “no, I must have been dreaming…”

Hermione and Ginny muffled their laughter in the bedclothes.

In Greek mythology, Centaurs are an embodiment of rape. It's their thing, almost any story involving them has them going to town on an unwilling woman.

Umbridge is unkempt but has no outward physical signs of trauma, but she flips the fuck out when she thinks she hears hooves. This is pretty clearly a rape victim.

  1. Traumatized
  2. No obvious physical reason for it (you can't say they beat her up)
  3. Centaurs are well established as mythology's rapists.

This isn't rocket surgery, I'm pretty surprised this part of Umbridge's fate isn't more widely known.

She's so awful because she is so recognisable. Voldermort is an obviously made up, fictional character but Umbridge is all around us. The pathetic desire to please authority. The abdication of your own sense of morality to a higher power.

Voldermort would kill you because you are in the way of his plans, or because your death would directly benefit him. Umbridge would do it because it changes a field in her traffic light progress report from amber to green.

This Canadian Psychology Professor has collected his life's research in a book that he made available for free, because he was so freaked out by his own findings - check it the fuck out.

J.K. Rowling nailed it.

" Let me ask you, as we’re passing the time here, how many ordinary people do you think an evil authority would have to order to kill you before he found someone who would, unjustly, out of sheer obedience, just because the authority said to? What sort of person is most likely to follow such an order? What kind of official is most likely to give that order, if it suited his purposes? Look at what experiments tell us, as I did."

I have no idea who those you linked are, but they're the same person right? The girl is that boy in drag. right?

[–]theghostofme 22 points23 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The boy is the character Joffrey Baratheon from the HBO adaptation of George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire book series. He might be one of the most ruthlessly cruel, evil, and power hungry little pubescent bastards I have ever come across in any media. The actor who plays him (Jack Gleeson) does such a great job that I can't help but sometimes hate the actor himself.

The girl is Nellie Olson, a character from the Little House on the Prairie TV series. While I haven't watched that show in decades, I can still remember hating her with a passion, and it's obvious I wasn't alone there.

It's interesting, though, that you bring up how much they look alike, considering how both are so equally hated characters.

[–]Xarnon 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Although they look alike, I'm going to disappoint you by telling you that they're not.

She's ~35 years older then him, though... (The actress, not the girl she played)

well we dont get the screen time or the narration/monologue about her to help really build up the hatred.

[–]ArJooDeJew 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Agreed.

But I think I prefer this more normal looking, dare I say prettier version. Because if a character is ugly, you know they're usually bad (prejudiced, I know) and it drops any disbelief you have in them being evil. But if a character like Umbridge is portrayed as normal and relatively good-looking, the fact that she's an unrepentant cunt comes as a bit of a shock to the system, even if you know it's coming.

[–]skyqween 23 points24 points ago

I felt she did more damage. Death Eaters still stood for something. She was just after power, and didn't care who she hurt on the way. One day she was against Voldy, the next she was in lockstep with him... That's almost more dangerous.

Fantastic villain, and one of the reasons why the 5th book is my favorite. I never really saw power as being her ultimate goal though, although she obviously took advantage of it when given the opportunity. She appears to honestly believe that what she is doing is right, which in my opinion makes her all the more chilling.

books aside, the whole thread is living proof to what an astounding actress Imelda Staunton is. If you yet haven't, do yourself a favor and watch a film called Vera Drake directed by the phenomenal Mike Leigh - you'll see this profoundly gifted woman provoke in you the sentiments polarly opposite to what she did in the Harry Potter flick.

The one thing that really pissed me off in Harry Potter is that this bitch didn't die! She was one of the most evil characters and she got no comeuppance. At all. She was a wizard-nazi, just like Voldermort, and still...nothing. She took Mad-Eye's eye and had it on her door, for crying out loud. She was one evil bitch. She deserved to die, and to burn in hell. (Had to finish the Sam Jackson quote)

Seriously, not enough bad guys died in Harry Potter. She had no problem killing the good guys off, and a lot of them were 'off screen'.
