sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

i had these when i was a kid about 20 years ago, get with the program

[–]kissmyapocalypse 14 points15 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I only had one, and thought it was kinda useless. TIL you're supposed to use two.

[–]andytuba 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Holy shit, two? I always just cantilevered it against a big flat panel.

[–]SubtleContradiction 1 point2 points ago

For the briefest fraction of a second I was horrified that you'd damage a TV/monitor for such a trivial purpose.

Then I remembered, we're talking about Lego here.

[–]Cocoa__Muffs 5 points6 points ago

You can use one but it's far less effective. Plus fuck those things, and fuck my step-dad for throwing mine away.

I only ever had one as well. I made it work.

Same here. Also came with a LEGO vacuum I believe.

[–]andytuba 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You got a vacuum, too? Lucky bastard.

[–]snoharm 21 points22 points ago

Don't be too jealous, the damn thing sucked.

yeah it had something like a rotating wheel in the front. looked cool didn't work as expected... oh well.

[–]tree-house 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

A whaaat? I came in here all "Pssh. Lego separating tool. Been there done that." Now I'm floored.

[–]PhilxBefore[!] 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It looked like this. Just basically a 'waterwheel' type thing that collects all the blocks into the base. Very quick way to pick them all up.

[–]tkgm -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The damn thing didn't work very well on carpets though, might be a different story with hard surface floors.

[–]PrO1210 -1 points0 points ago

That's the Lego Zamboni.

Never had a vacuum but I had the pry piece. I remember when I first got it, it was a gift from the heavens.

The "hide child comments" option below your post is hilarious to me in this context.

[–]farsightxr20 1 point2 points ago

I think OP was referring to how two Separators can separate two skinny pieces as shown in the GIF. My mind was definitely blown.

[–]Saigancat 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Ditto, these are nothing new.

[–]russiangn 0 points1 point ago

Came here to post same thing. These came with my first lego set

[–]Momentstealer -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Same here. It's been around quite a while...

[–]KathrynTheGreat -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I had one of these too, but mine looked like a shark. I lost it all the time though so I usually just used my teeth.

[–]galo404 50 points51 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

i always just used my teeth

[–]goldenbug 29 points30 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

you know a lego brick has been well played with if it has teeth marks on it.

[–][deleted] 11 points12 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I chipped my tooth that way. My mom was pissed.

[–]Azrael_Ferrum 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That's strange, because once my mum was pissed as fuck, so she chipped my tooth.

[–]deathbytray 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I remember trying that, and the damn thing slipping off my teeth and cutting my gums. This happened quite a few times.

[–][deleted] 16 points17 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Ah, so you need 2 of those things. I just had one, and could still never get the small pieces apart.

[–]SickBoy88 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I never quite figured out how to use them.

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I thought it was pretty useless, because the big blocks were easy to get apart, and the small ones that always got stuck couldn't really be separated with one of these.

Eventually I got a knife & would just wedge it in between and gently pry them apart. And that was the day I became a man.

[–]tiffwhy 13 points14 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, I acquired one as a wee lass as well, but by that point my brain had learned to enjoy the pain. Don't give your kid one: I credit the frustrating process of engineering a way to get those things open as the origins of my MacGyver-like ingenuity as an adult.

[–]wbgraphic 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Truly, the ability to work through a problem is a valuable skill to have. Gizmos like this kill that skill before it even develops. Don't have the hyper-specific tool for the ridiculously simple task? Gee, I guess you can't do it. On the plus side, it helps to create a market for all those single-function kitchen gadgets on late-night infomercials. 8-/

[–]TheMacPhisto 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Wow... Wish I had these instead of that butterknife I used when I was a kid... Come to think of it. That butterknife is still in my tub of legos.

[–]mypetridish -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

if u knew how to use this u would have lost all of your ingenuity you cultivated while trying to take the lego pieces apart.. eg. using a butter knife, that's cool. i used a cutter blade.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Was I the only 5 year old who used two pliers to get pieces like that loose again?

[–]mypetridish -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

why do they only come in one and not two if that is how it was supposed to be used?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't think pliers were invented to get two lego pieces apart from each other. You could do it with one but 5 year old me thought it easier to just take two pliers and use one for each piece.

[–]Irishfury86 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I have never told my mom this but her ability to use her nails to take those legos apart for me when I was eight were the deciding factor in the decision that she was awesome. Not food, not clothing, not financial and emotional stability but legos.

[–]ergsentry 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

When I was younger, my uncle bought me one of the first Lego Mind-storm kits, It had one of these in it. Im 22 and my legos are gone ... :( ... but that tool I still have.

[–]MrSchadenfreude 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

SO THAT'S HOW YOU USE THEM

I thought they were for making some sort of diving flippers

[–]stewiecubed 1 point2 points ago

These things are nothing short of miraculous.

[–]Artrock80 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Those have been around forever, I had one in the late 80's/early 90's. Convenient!

[–]LastImmortalMan 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Are these not original lego pieces? I used them when I was a kid, and my lego set was from my older brother (80s).

[–]dietotaku 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

i remember these from when i was a kid too. but i only ever had the one, so i still had to use my fingernails as a lever to get the little pieces apart.

[–]Kustumkyle 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

i had one of those when i was a kid. didn't make sense until now that i see i should have had 2

[–]Hipoltry 1 point2 points ago

[–]kikism 1 point2 points ago

LEGO's in the third world didn't come with these. I bled.

[–]scottbre 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You know, a third larger LEGO piece will do the job just as well. No reason to have a special tool.

[–]harrisonfordcrab 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Had one of these as a kid.. for about a day before it got lost. Teeth work just as well

[–]Deous 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

a butter knife works great too, my mom gave me it when I chiped my tooth 30 years ago

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Fuck EVERYTHING about that. Teeth and a butter knife are all you need.

[–]Lemonegro 0 points1 point ago

I only had one...

[–]Neovle 0 points1 point ago

Yeah they have been along for a long time but somehow i never got one in the packs i bought. But it's no big deal really.

Nails and teeth my friend, nails and teeth.

[–]belgianguy 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I had one of those, but until now I never realised what the two top 'pins' were for. After seeing the animation I now feel stupid. I always placed the sturdy bricks on one of my road plates, and then used the tool to separate them and then again to remove the bottom piece from the road plate.

[–]everfalling 0 points1 point ago

WHOA WHOA WHOA. YOU USE TWO OF THEM? OW. FUCK. MY BRAIN. WHAT THE FUCK.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

THAT'S WHAT THAT IS?!?!?! I only had one and I thought it was a ramp...

[–]ScottyBoiBoi 0 points1 point ago

[–]mansel 0 points1 point ago

my very first lego starter kit came with one of these. I was 3 at the time currently 25

[–]Cr1m 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

THAT's what it's for!? I thought it was just a crappy piece of lego that represents a ramp or wing

[–]Strawcrazyman 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Finger nails? Legos are for sharpening teeth.

[–]FuckDucker 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Your lego's actually came with one of those, but your dad took it out while saying, "What madness is this?? My children will suffer from broken and bloody finger nails, just like I did."

[–]OmegaVesko 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Legos didn't exist when my dad was a kid.

[–]MilkDaddy 0 points1 point ago

That's what pocket knives are made for!

[–]E-Pro -1 points0 points ago

SO THATS WHAT THOSE THINGS WERE FOR

[–]Raeki -1 points0 points ago

I just used other legos to do the same exact thing.

[–]FOR_SClENCE -1 points0 points ago

WAIT. That's what the studs on top were for? Well I'll be damned...

[–]yousedditreddit -1 points0 points ago

i always wondered how those worked

[–]Toglco -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

So that's what the top part was for! I wish I knew that when I was eight. I only ever used the bottom half.

[–]Disench4nted -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Dude, those aren't new at all! They saved my life SO many times!

[–]PeterMus -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No one in my robotics class told me you are suppose to use two of them at the same time. Fuck.

[–]gloomdoom -4 points-3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I have to admit that I'm a little creeped out at how fascinated Redditors are with fucking Legos.

I'd be all for it if this were a community of intellects and critical thinkers who are using them to create original works of engineering or models of architecture. But I'm smart enough to realize that what it really indicates is that most of the people on reddit are just fucking oversized children who all but refuse to put away their toys and step into the real world.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Front page is plastered with Pokemon and Calvin & Hobbes and Legos is what finally gave it away for ya?

[–]OmegaVesko 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

TL;DR - Hurr, Legos are for kids and you're stupid if you like them.
