Tales of Vesperia was a great game but I feel like people often overlook it. The whole Tales series excels in crafting wonderful stories that would appeal to any RPG fan.

[–]hypertension 4 points5 points ago

People seem to overlook the whole tales series... but it's been getting lots of love here on Reddit lately.

I wish I were surrounded by the people that you are, then. I've met only one other person IRL who knows about the series, and he had never played it.

... but I know that the numbers don't lie and that it is, as you say, insanely popular.

[–]FoozleMoozle 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They seem to have a very solid fanbase, but they are frequently overlooked by Bandai Namco of America. Many of the games don't get a release outside of Japan, and when they do, they aren't advertised well at all (so only people who know to look for them actually do). So yes, it's insanely popular in the right circles, but "overlooked" still applies.

[–]TheGoshDarnedBatman 130 points131 points ago

Historically, you actually "loose" an arrow, but yeah, I came in here to point this out. Drives me nuts in movies.

[–]8erudite8 9 points10 points ago

[–]ndchristie 28 points29 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

you can't correct spelling prior to standardization.

Not to mention it had dropped the "ou" while the bow was still very much in fashion (by the late 14th century, "loose" is clearly established). At most "louse" was a common version of the word (along with los, loos, lose, and eventually the standard loose), and never official. Chaucer, a writer in the transition period, uses multiple spellings.

[–]polyparadigm 5 points6 points ago

All these verbs can be used with lots of nouns and vice versa.

You can fire a bullet, but you can also fire a gun, a cannon, a cannonball, or an employee. You can also fire an arrow or a bow, but only if firearms have been invented at the time.

You can fire bullets, shoot bullets (if the target is already in the domain of discourse, it won't sound like your are aiming at bullets), and spray bullets etc.

[–]BCMM 0 points1 point ago

That guy seriously needs to take a moment to understand films and what makes something visually interesting. Real Martial arts aren't visually interesting but in films you have actors doing almost impossible flips, especially in mid-fight and powerless kicks and punchs that would barely hurt anyone in real life.

Aspects such as the strained muscles when holding the bow back for so long aren't what you want to see in the main heroes and villans. The holding of the bow gives the impression of strength, skill and control. If the director wants the character to appear weak then they will have the actor strain under the preasure of the bow. These are visual techniques that are used to portray character.

He uses LotR a lot which is full of warriors. The elves are typically masters of the bow in fantasy and the idea of having such elegant characters having shaking arms because they are holding the bow for too long is stupid.

The noise from pulling back the bow is a typical way of portraying strength from the weapon, despite not being accurate. Ever hear the sound of dramatic gun cocking sounds when ever someone is holding a machine gun and moves slightly? That doesn't happen in real life, it is there for dramatic effect.

The guy may understand bows, but he doesn't understand how you visually tell a story. If LotR sacrificed looks for practicality it would have been the biggest pile of a shit ever.

Edit: This has recieved a lot of reply and I have learned a lot from them. Perhaps it was the way I wrote it but a lot of people are under the impression that when I mentioned the cocking of the gun they instantly assume I mean the irritating sound of 5 people with guns suddenly making clicking noises. I am refering to when someone is preparing to shoot. It is an audio cue for the viewer that he/she is ready to shoot and that he will if it doesn't go his/her way. This is different from the 5 hour gun cocking sounds from soldiers.

I have taken many of your points into consideration and agree with most of them too. My post was mainly focussing on LotR because that was clearly the guys main focus too. The cast sacrificed technique for looks, which I personally believe was the right thing to do. It is a film that was aimed at everyone and not everyone wants to see a film with all the realistic detail that may become distracting. The scene at Helm's Deep where they all draw back their bows and hold them would look a little strange to some people if everyone's arms were shaking. While it makes sense as the preasure from the bow is a lot, it would look odd for an army of elves, who enter like total badasses who make most of what they do look effortless. Granted however they could have made the men who hadn't fought battles and were young or old to struggle with the bows.

Thank you for your replies. As I say, they were useful in helping me understand more about what people find entertaining and what they would prefer to see in films.

[–]redditIsInfected 19 points20 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't think film makers need to rely on cliches in order to visually tell a good story. I would love to see accurate (within reason), researched portrayals of war in the ancient and middle ages. People love contemporary war films that are realistic and show the people who fight in the middle east or vietnam and the psychology involved with being a soldier.

Instead of a writer loosely basing his work on some kind of romanticised idea of warfare and fitting everything within this constraint in the name of artistic license why not do some work and take a challenge by limiting yourself to reality while creating a work of fiction.

We have plenty of examples of filmmakers taking artistic license to bend the rules and have the audience go "oh well it's just a movie what should we expect".

Give us something that actually tries to portray what life was like for the common soldier on an ancient battlefield among thousands of men waiting for death, just standing there in heaving armor and weapons. Sun bearing down and blinding him while he thinks of the multitude of ways he could die at any moment. People literally shitting themselves left and right, vomiting, shouting, gibbering. Can you trust the men beside you? When will the men behind you rout and leave you easy prey? Even if you survive the day can you live with yourself after brutally hacking a man apart? PTSD isn't a new thing. They were still humans.

Fuck glory and character. Show us war.

[–]Aegeus 21 points22 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That will tell precisely one kind of story. For Tolkien, it's probably the wrong kind. There's room for variety.

[–]redditIsInfected 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

True I agree that it's ridiculous for a lotr adaption. The battles in those movies were close enough to what they should have been considering the source.

[–]Riovanes 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The important thing is that there's room for both - for realistic art, that shows the hardship of life, and escapist art, that's just something cool. I think it's extremely important to have movies that are "serious business", so to speak. On the other hand, I've turned off war movies because I realized it was going to be yet another "horrors of war" movie that hammered in the lesson about how much war sucks, when really, all I wanted to see was some cool explosions.

When I heard about 300, I didn't know about the comic book and assumed it was going to be an adaptation of Gates of Fire. That would be a movie I'd watch.

Well, what harm is there in pointing out flaws? I learned something about Bows thanks to that video that I otherwise wouldn't have.

[–]phillycheese -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Because pointing out these "flaws" (which are necessary, so I don't see how one would call them flaws) is about as stupid as going to a Harry Potter movie and saying, "Well actually, magic doesn't exist in real life, so this movie doesn't make sense at all!"

[–]paradox1123 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The principal is called Tangential Learning. By using a context which we already enjoy (LotR) this guy is teaching us about historical bows and arrows.

[–]DanGliesack 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I would say it's more along the lines of going to the Harry Potter movie and saying "Well, actually, it seems unrealistic that Hermione seems to know all the important things at the right times!"

The only thing that really irritates me about the archery in LotR, is that Orlando Bloom acts like he knows how to use a bow. He has the right stance and technique for the most part and everything, and he spent years doing it. Then three years later he gets a part in Troy and suddenly forgets how to use a fucking bow =\

[–]finix 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Very well done. Now please defend CSI's enhance! with that same line of reasoning.

[–]g33n 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Your aunt who is scared of Foxfire represents 90% of the audience, and they actually believe stuff like that is possible.

One poster went deep into these techniques in film and TV, and was absolutely torn apart for telling the truth. Fact of the matter is, these sorts of tropes exist because they make for smoother storytelling. Audiences don't actually want total realism.

[–]HPLoveshack 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm sorry, but when did all of those terrible cliches of Hollywood fight/battle scenes become a good thing? I don't need to have the drama of a situation emphasized with superfluous gun cocking noises and bow creaks. I am not an 13 year old that gets a gun-boner (or bow-boner) every time I hear that sound. It's pedantic and distracting, especially in a film that attempts to maintain a modicum of seriousness.

Dramatic tension is all well and good, until of course you build it in an idiotic way. Then it's effect is entirely reversed and it becomes a joke. Hilarious anachronisms played seriously and horrendous tactical decisions my dog could pick out as stupid tend to fall into this category.

I don't think any of his points, aside from the last one, is mutually exclusive to good story telling. I've never particularly enjoyed the dramatic bow creak or unnecessary gun cock, nor do I think it's going to ruin anything if they teach actors proper bow shooting techniques, or use the proper words.

[–]Zimaben 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I am never impressed when I see actors unnecessarily cock firearms or clear empty chambers. I'm not impressed when a barfight in an otherwise realistic movie suddenly devolves into stylized kung fu. Maybe a lot of directors need to stop being such total hacks all of the time.

But yeah, pointing out how unrealistic the bow is being used in a trollfight between midgets and wizards is just as stupid I guess.

[–]Erudecorp 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The inaccuracy of film effects are more often from cutting costs. No one would hire an archer or historian for one line or spend five minutes fact-checking every line of a 200 line screenplay.

[–]Dantayl 4 points5 points ago*

I am talking about martial arts in a fight on the street. As a martial artist myself a fight on the street is a quick and not so graceful fight compared to the 10 minute long flips and blocking you get in films.

Martial arts is about balance, control, avoiding attacks and getting your attacker on the floor so you can get away, it isn't about being shoved in a ring and forced to fight each other for x ammount of time.

Actually... I'm with him.

To me, a movie is MUCH more entertaining when things like this are done RIGHT rather than just done for visual tension. I think the world would be a much better place if we raised the education level of the happenings in movies rather than lower the common denominator to entertain those who just don't know. It's hard for me to enjoy a movie when events or actions are blatantly incorrect. All I can think of is the mistake. Those who don't know any better then take the mistake to be fact and now you have a bunch of idiots who THINK they know because they "saw it in that movie".

Nothing is more annoying to me than the fact that they can spend hundreds of millions of dollars producing a movie and there was obviously no one around to say "Hey, that guy just fired 10 rounds out a a six-shot revolver!" or "Hey, why didn't the wizard just fly there on his giant eagle?"

Reddit filters out the 90% crap on 4chan that sucks and shows the 10% that's good. Basically, a 4chan filter.

[–]TheJollyLlama875 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The entire rest of the internet is a 4chan filter, which is, it has been argued, a SomethingAwful filter.

They fixed this, actually. I know because I knew how to make negative comments, tried it again one day recently and it no longer worked.

The system does it on purpose. There have been discussions about it in the past; upvotes/downvotes and comment counts are usually hedged a bit to prevent scammers from gaming the Reddit system.

[–]nanto 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Same with the downtime, bots can't spam us if the site is down...

I gotta say the Reddit admins are geniuses for coming up with an algorithm that could be mistaken for a bug.

Raven is actually throwing the bow at the enemy. If he'd simply let go, the bow would've launched itself backwards, likely damaging Raven's nose in the process.

[–]theblackprofessor 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Technically the tension in the line would cause the bow to fly backwards.

[–]iloveslowpoke 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Obviously they weren't holding onto the bow but let go of the string causing it to fly forward. Like when you shoot a rubber band off your finger.

[–]theblackprofessor -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

haha, I genuinely don't want to sound like a prick but the momentum from the string wouldn't propel the bow. Upvote though!

[–]Dramatic_pause 15 points16 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's reddit. We uselessly nitpick everything.

[–]Triantaffelow 11 points12 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well, see, it wasn't useless though. The nitpicking's use was to show a fault in someone's speech that they thought was important enough to make a note of. Perhaps needlessly would have been a better choice? Then again, what if the person nitpicking found he had a pathological need to correct someone on such a minor mistake in language? Wouldn't that remove the possibility of using the word needlessly?

Words are funny things.

[–]LeSlowpoke 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You are literally using it correctly, and the pedants on Reddit shouldn't be telling you otherwise. That is, Redditors think they are smarter than others but can not recognize hyperbole, and instead assume that you do not know the meaning of the word - when in fact they have the definition wrong themselves.

Either that, or they know full well that literally can be used as an intensifier, and are being willfully ignorant to the evolution of language. It is not as if they do not understand how the word is being used when they read or hear it.

[–]thetheist 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

"Literally" is a word that breaks cliche or hyperbole. If you steal it to become an intensifier, then you either remove all of its meaning except as an intensifier, or every sentence it is in becomes nonsensical. It's a completely inappropriate appropriation.

For example: If you try to defend your stupid comment, I will literally murder you.

See? The sentence's meaning is completely obscured by people like yourself. Sleep well.

[–]LeSlowpoke 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Are you literally ignoring context?

When one friend says to another (Jokingly, I will add, in case you really do not understand context), "I will literally murder you if you spill that coke on my futon." It doesn't mean the same thing as, "Fire is literally hot."

Just because you can step onto your pedantic highchair and say, ""Literally" is a word that breaks cliche or hyperbole", does not in fact make it so. You are not some grand judicator of the english language, and the sooner you accept that you have no control over the evolution of language, the better.

The sentence's meaning is completely obscured by people like yourself.

No, it isn't. Because when people say things they have context.

Since the early 20th century, literally has been widely used as an intensifier meaning “in effect, virtually,” a sense that contradicts the earlier meaning “actually, without exaggeration”: The senator was literally buried alive in the Iowa primaries. The parties were literally trading horses in an effort to reach a compromise. The use is often criticized; nevertheless, it appears in all but the most carefully edited writing. Although this use of literally irritates some, it probably neither distorts nor enhances the intended meaning of the sentences in which it occurs. The same might often be said of the use of literally in its earlier sense “actually”: The garrison was literally wiped out: no one survived.

[–]ScaperBen -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

In brightest day, in darkest night
No evil shall escape my sight.

Just felt like a good moment to say that, but thanks, intensifier is the perfect word to describe my use of the word literally.
