i posted this below, but since its lonely at the bottom: EASY WAY TO UNDERSTAND IT

i just overlayed some color on the bottom block.

Again, the grain in the top right corner do not match.

The grain is easy to do, but I'm more worried about the shadow under the hand

[–]sierrabravo1984 0 points1 point ago

The shadow should curve if that edge really exists...

Exactly

That is the same thing I did only I did it with lines and you did it with colour... and mine was first...

That is the same thing I did when I was presented this years ago. But sure, turn this into a battle of "FIRST!"

[–]dweeb_ 0 points1 point ago

Well if you did it years ago then obviously you win. No battle.

I'd say whoever came up with the idea wins.

That looks good, but how do you account for the top right corner? Or how the grain matches up perfectly where the 2 pieces meet at the far end?

Here is what I mean

EDIT: This is what I think is going on and the only way that would work is if there are some very strange angles to the piece which are being hidden by the angle of the shot. One of the major things that lead me to this is THERE IS NO SEAM if one piece was ON TOP of the other. It has to be side by side.

[–]jusksmit 2 points3 points ago

The top right corner is the easy part: you simply chamfer off the corner and glue on a lighter-colored piece so it has a new corner. Matching the grains up is the harder part. And the shadow below the fingertips is even harder. I'm not convinced this isn't just a shop.

[–]GoneSoon 1 point2 points ago

Also, the shadows under the finger don't seem to follow the angle of the wood.

[–]helium_farts 0 points1 point ago

perhaps they are cut from the same piece of wood?

Explanation?

[–]ewest 1 point2 points ago

Tilt your screen toward the left and look at it as though the hand is coming from beneath and laying on the side of it.

[–]thepenk 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Probably just this You can see from the lines in the wood that it makes sense

I don't know....the grain doesn't match. Also, I don't see the seam between the 2 if one was on top of the other.

I believe you are correct penk

I see 2 pieces stacked vertically. at the end, there is a bit of a reflection onto the upper piece giving the illusion that it is the bottom piece. That's how I see it anyhow.

[–]muddythewaters 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I may be intoxicated, but it seems to me that if they were stacked vertically, the shadow cast by the hand would have an angle to it.

[–]entropystoragedevice 0 points1 point ago

i finally see it the way you do. At first i was messed up, but when i closed 1 eye, i saw the real shape for a second. After that, it's easy to see, especially if you cover the bottom piece of wood.

[–]SecondVariety 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

First viewing my eyes went from left to right and it looked like the bottom piece is longer than the top piece. Second and Third look were the same. Fourth look was right to left and I immediately saw the illusion where it appears both pieces of wood are of similar length side-by-side on the right but vertically stacked on the left. I think the wood grain kind of gives it away if you don't get distracted by the hand.

Trained my eye on it and finally got it, then chuckled and said 'haha my brain hurts'. Good night reddit.

I dont understand the mindfuck on this one...

[–]DCShaw 0 points1 point ago

It looks as though the top piece has been slightly coloured near the end to line up with the bottom piece. You can see the top right hand corner of it is yellow, compared to the other bit which is greeny-blue which has been coloured to look like a part of the lower block...if that makes sense?

[–]f0rcedinducti0n 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's a thin, flat piece of wood that has its left end (in this picture) cut on an angle to appear as though it's a taller, thicker piece of wood. The sides and other ends were cut to make it appear a different shape from this angle as well.

[–]internet_interpol 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Eliminate the impossible and what ever is left must be the answer... Two blocks of wood on top of each other.

[–]canadianman001 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They likely took an image of the bottom half, then photographed it with the top half on. Post processing would see an idividual then edit the wood grain from the top of the bottom half into the top block.

It's just one piece of wood cleverly shaved, with a couple screws and a hand....why is this a "mind-fuck"
